CObirders— While returning from a funeral in SE Kansas, just before dark yesterday I saw at least four large owls (probable Short-eared) and several Ferruginous Hawks flying lo over the winter wheat fields and prairiewhile driving across northwestern Kansas and northeastern Colorado on highway 36. In this area of prairie, there were many expanses with no trees or telephone poles in sight. My route took me from Atwood, Kansas to Strasburg, Colorado (avoiding I70 and all the traffic).
It was amazing (and somewhat scary) because the road was two-lane was so deserted. I saw almost no other vehicles. I highly recommend highway 36 as an alternative route to I70 in this area if you have an extra hour— speed limit is a little lower and you must slow down going through the small towns. Bird City, KS, did have more birds (mostly mourning doves) than the other small towns. One town has a small population of Great-tailed Grackles. The Republican River had water and its associated State Wildlife Area is on the route and is worth exploring, although perhaps not during hunting season.
