Birders,
I spent the last 1.5 hrs of daylight studying the gulls at Valmont today. The
adult TUNDRA SWAN continues in Hillcrest Reservoir, below Legion Park. The
RED-NECKED GREBE was in a small hole in the ice on Valmont Reservoir (~98%
frozen, mostly a thin layer). A female PRAIRIE MERLIN flew over the parking
area.
The gull watching was really about as good as it gets from Legion Park. There
was a large group on the ice on Valmont when I first arrived just after 4. They
all took up and flew into Hillcrest Reservoir, which is a rare sight. It was
very convenient to have 2,000+ gulls on the water just below Legion Park. When
I left there were about 1900 gulls on the ice on Valmont, and another 2,500 on
the water in Hillcrest. I counted the following:
1 1st cycle Glaucous x Herring Gull (I suspect the same individual that has
been at Anthem, etc., this winter.)2 Glaucous Gulls (1 ad, 1 v. pale 1st
cycle)2 1st cycle Thayer's Gulls (probably a few adults out there but none
stood out)1 ad California Gull4 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (1 ad, 1 3rd cycle, 2
1st/2nd cycles)
~4200 Ring-billed Gulls~200 Herring Gulls
Great birding,
