I had the privilege of spending the day out getting an education on
atlassing by doing several blocks with Paul Opler. The sand sage
prairie was flooded with migrants and we had a great time! It was
fascinating to explore a different type of habitat and be delighted
by great flowers as well.

Highlight of the day for me, well there were many.. was the
Swainson's Hawk footing a Great Horned Owl right above my head! I
heard the sound of the hawks wings as it pulled up and stalled before
attacking the owl. Wow!

There were waves of Lark Buntings, Vesper and Lark Sparrows, along
with Clay-colored, White-crowned, and Chipping. Lincoln's Sparrows
here and there, Spotted and Green-tailed Towhee's on the same branch,
loads of Mourning Doves everywhere.

The migrant trap type areas were popping with Orange-crowned
Warblers, a few Audubon's, Bullock's Orioles, Western Kingbirds,
Mockingbirds, a taste of Brown Thrashers with a salting of a
Swainson's Thrush and two Cassin's Kingbirds.

Rock Wren's flitted about wondering where all the rocks were, and
stopping at Riverside Res. produced a nice variety of ducks,
pelicans, grebes, gulls and several Forster's Terns.

Quite a productive, educational, all around great day of birding with
a purpose.
