While doing a bird survey for the city this morning on the Peschel Property
just east of County Line Road in Longmont, my partner and I spotted two
White Pelicans flying east over the St. Vrain. This property is part of the
Longmont Greenway but it suffered severe damage in the 2013 floods so the
trail between Peschel and Sandstone Ranch is closed for now.

The floods created numerous sandbars and ponds along the St. Vrain out
there and we had at least 5 American Avocets, several Green-wing teal,
Blue-wing Teal, Cinnamon Teal, Gadwall, one Greater Yellowlegs, scads of
Mallards, many Kildeer and one very young Canada Goose gosling with its
parents. There are at least 4 Ring-necked Pheasant on the property and
even though most of the trail is now closed off due to flood damage, there
is a small parking lot (south of Hwy 119 on County Line Road) and from the
parking lot, you can hear, if not see them from time to time. From the bit
of sidewalk that is still open, you can see the Bald Eagle nest on the St.
Vrain.
