Bill Kaempfer, Tom Wilberding, and I once saw a Pomerine take out a Franklin's Gull at Jackson Reservoir. I've heard a similar story about a Pom taking out a Laughing Gull from Steve Mlodinow. The experience we had at Jackson was pretty gruesome. Jaegers and Skuas don't have talons to grasp prey with, so the method was to grab the bird at the back of the head with the powerful bill while weighing the bird down by pushing down on its back with the feet. Once the Pom got the Franklin's down into the water, it held it down and pecked mercifully at the back of the head until the Franklin's was dispatched.

We saw the struggle as the gull tried get away from the Pomarine. It didn't have a chance. Fascinating to watch. Very unexpected. We figured a RBgull is only 6 oz smaller.
