The weather this weekend made for difficult travel in the mountains. However,
it brought in some good birds. Here are the highlights from two days in the
southwestern part of the state.

While on my way to Last Chance on Thursday, April 29th, a Scissor-tailed

About 7:30 this morning I thought I heard a Plumbious Vireo singing in my
backyard. When I located the bird it looked rather chunky, had a yellow
throat and breast, whitish belly and vent, short tail, and olive head with
not-very-defined yellowish spectacles. Since it was high in
Peregrines: Sunday, May 2, in 4 miles of the Cherry Creek corridor from
Castlewood Canyon SP to Walker Pit, two groups (Karen Metz Denver Audubon
Master Birders) saw a total of Three Peregrine Falcons, all headed north. (But
no more Broad-winged Hawks).

spring bird count to celebrate IMBD. This is our 20th year of celebrating
birds in this manner to increase awareness and appreciation of birds and their

After a large influx of warblers at Chico Basin Ranch on Sunday, they left.
Promising start today, but fizzled fast - and only 9 new birds were banded.
We're hoping for weather that brings in more birds, and some greenery on the

Just a reminder, the Pueblo County Spring Migration Count will be held on
Saturday (as usual the 2nd Saturday in May all over the U.S.). Bill Maynard is
the official counter for birds seen at Chico Basin Ranch in Pueblo County for
the count (birds seen on the El Paso County side of
This evening one Short-Billed Dowitcher was relocated at the new wetlands
area at Cherry Creek State Park from about 7:10 to 7:30PM. It was heard
vocalizing, the last time while a crow was harassing birds at the wetlands.
