[cobirds] Black Phoebe update in Canon City area

2017-04-10 Thread SeEttaM .
It is looking to be a very good year for Black Phoebes in Canon City and
Florence. Following is a summary of Black Phoebes I have observed in the
past week in this area:

Canon City near First Street bridge over Arkansas River--observed a pair
foraging together near the bridge. Have had this species in this location
in past and expect nesting nearby.

Canon City at Sell's Lake--continuing pair observed almost daily when I go
down to walk the riverwalk.

Canon City at MacKenzie Ave bridge over the Arkansas River-I continue to
see or hear one or both of the pair I found there about 2 weeks ago.
Historical nesting area. They can be heard and/or seen from the bridge
(caution needed due to heavy traffic).

Florence private property--continuing pair in historical nesting location.

Florence private property--today I spotted one Black Phoebe at an historic
nesting location on this other private property.

Florence River Park--so far I have only seen one Black Phoebe which is
often at the Sewer Plant that is located next to the park. I got a couple
of good pics of this bird that are on my Birds and Nature blog,

just scroll to right under the blog post on the swan.

Total observation time: 5.5 hours

Observers:

Visitors:
Surprisingly few people were on the nice, dry trail today. A few came up
for the view. One couple with their dog came up early in the morning to
chat. Returning, after their hike, they mentioned having seen what was
likely a Turkey Vulture south on the Ridge, as well as having spotted some
newly-blooming Golden Banner and Larkspur wildflowers.

Weather:
The day was sunny with a slightly hazy, nearly featureless blue sky that
eventually produced a few cottony clouds to the west in the afternoon. It
would have been almost warm (7 C to 12 C) except for the near-constant
breezes (bft 2-3) from the southeast. Visibility was acceptable but a bit
hazy in the valleys at distance, even in the morning. The few contrails
that did form dissipated rapidly.

Raptor Observations:
During two 15-minute-long bursts of migrant activity in the first two hours
of the watch, all but one of the migrants passed along the western valley
or western ridges. The flow of migrants became more evenly spaced time-wise
and eventually slowed during the next hours of the watch; most of these
later migrants passed over Dinosaur Ridge. It is possible with the
featureless blue sky that some high-flying migrants were missed in the
afternoon. Observing a couple of migrating Swainson’s Hawks is always
pleasing, but the highlight of the day was a good view of an adult
Broad-winged Hawk, spotted kettling up with a Cooper's Hawk and some
Red-tailed Hawks over the western valley. The highlight of the local raptor
activity was catching the finale of a tussle between a local adult
Red-tailed Hawk and an immature (possibly sub-adult III) Bald Eagle that
took place south of HawkWatch overtop the Ridge; the Bald Eagle flipped
upside down to defend itself against the Red-tailed Hawk's attack from
above. They then parted with the hawk going east and the eagle heading
south.

Non-raptor Observations:
Early in the watch, a Broad-tailed Hummingbird zinged over the platform.
Several groups of 10 to 15 White-throated Swifts were seen flying (mostly
northward) along the Ridge and valleys as well as over WestRidge and at
Cabrini. A lone Cliff Swallow flew about for a while over the western
valley, eventually heading southwards. Also seen or heard were Western
Meadowlark, Townsend's Solitaire, Canyon Wren, Black-billed Magpie, Spotted
Towhee, American Crow, Common Raven, Black-capped Chickadee, Bushtit, and
Violet-green Swallow.

[cobirds] FOY Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Larimer County

2017-04-10 Thread Eva Matthews
Had my FOY Broad-tailed Hummingbird in the yard today by Horsetooth
Reservoir in Larimer County. Compared to last year at the same location,
it was April 23, 2016. I put out the feeders and it continued to feed on
and off all day until sunset.

Also, I had an early Yellow-bellied Sapsucker in the yard on March 23rd.

[cobirds] South Valley Park area and Robert A. Easton Regional Park, JeffCo 4/10

2017-04-10 Thread David Suddjian
An *Eastern Phoebe* returned to Deer Creek at the intersection of Deer
Creek Canyon Road and Valley Road, where a tributary flows under Deer Creek
Canyon Road from the north. This is immediately west of the southern
parking lot for South Valley Park, and is the same spot where one was
present in May 2016. It was singing and cooperative where the tributary
joins Deer Creek. Some road work in the local area and the traffic on Deer
Creek Canyon Road made birding less pleasant, though. Over 20 *White-throated
Swifts* were in view over the adjacent part of the Lyons Formation hogback,
and a *Broad-tailed Hummingbird* passed over on its way north.

Two *Wilson's Snipe* were chipping in the cattail marsh in South Valley
Park where Valley Road curves away from the road to Lockheed Martin's Deer
Creek facility. Further north one of a pair of nesting *Prairie Falcons*
was perched near the nest ledge. The pair was obvious before egg laying,
but is now much less evident.

I don't know if this is somehow not to be mentioned, but since the info is
already very public on eBird, I will mention that 2 *Burrowing Owls*
continue in the prairie dog colony near Hine Lake in Robert A. Easton
Regional Park. They can be viewed quite well from the main path that passes
near the colony, without any need to walk into the colony, please and thank
you. While I was there, I noted a fly over *Broad-tailed Hummingbird*,
a *Swainson's
Hawk*, 1 *Vesper Sparrow*, and small parties of *Tree* and *Barn Swallows*.
On *Northern Rough-winged Swallow* was separate from the other swallows.
Hine Lake had a nice mix of waterbirds including 23 *Greater Scaup*, 3 *Horned
Grebes*, 1 *Eared Grebe*, 1 *Blue-winged Teal*, 2 *Cinnamon Teal*, 1 *Greater
Yellowlegs*, and others.

[cobirds] Wild Goose Chase, some Franklin's Gulls and a Common Loon

2017-04-10 Thread Jeff Parks
Hi all -

After reading reports of a large flock of White-Faced Ibis on Lagerman
Reservoir yesterday, I thought I would see if they were still hanging
around today. I got up there around 9 am, it was still windy, but no signs
of any Ibis. There was an American Avocet wading around on the far side,
and a Greater Yellowlegs, along with a couple of Killdeer. A Northern
Harrier flew over at close range, got some good looks at that one. An bird
sitting on a fencepost threw me off for a minute, I was trying to figure
out what kind of hawk it was until it took off again, when it became
obvious that it was an Osprey.

On a whim, I thought I would take a look at Clover Basin Reservoir, since
it is close by, but there were only a handful of Redheads and Ringnecks on
that one. What the heck, let's see what is on McIntosh Reservoir, it is
only a short distance from here ... There was a good sized flock of
American White Pelicans, around 35 or so, along with some Redheads, a few
Blue-Winged Teal and some other ducks. As I was looking along the near
shore, I spotted two gulls that didn't appear to be Ring-Billed gulls, they
turned out to be Franklin's Gulls. Close enough to get a couple of
pictures (posted below). I watched them for awhile, until a Bald Eagle
flew overhead, sending them out over the reservoir somewhere. After
watching the Pelicans for a litle longer, it was time to head on to the
next stop.

Driving east from 287 on Yellowstone Road, I was almost to N 115th when I
spotted a duck flying east over the field next to me. I was a bit
surprised to see it land up in the trees along the road. Once I got the
binoculars out, it turned out to be a male Wood Duck. I don't know why it
landed in that tree, but it made for some good looks. Once I got up to Ish
Reservoir, there were a few Pelicans, a Horned Grebe, a few Gadwall and
some Green-Winged Teal.

Deciding that it had been mostly a Wild Goose (Wild Ibis?) chase, I headed
back to Boulder. I decided to stop by Baseline Reservoir to see if the
Franklin's Gulls were still there, and there was a pretty good flock on the
north end. I counted 130, there may have been more than that. A single
Common Loon and one Western Grebe were seen in the mix as well. I didn't
stop on the south end, but saw a bunch of ducks on the water there from a
distance. It was time for lunch.

Good birding -

Re: [cobirds] Re: BRONZED COWBIRD photographed in Lamar by Jill White Smith

2017-04-10 Thread 'Migrant' via Colorado Birds
I live in Lakewood, about a mile from the Carters. During the period when the
cowbird was appearing in the Carters' yard, I looked out the window one morning
and saw it at my feeders. So, among the interesting yard birds I have had over
the years (orchard oriole, Carolina wren, summer tanager, juniper titmouse,
among others), bronzed cowbird is no doubt the "best". I was sort of hoping the
Bear Creek Lake Park brambling might show up, but as far as I know, it never
did.:-(

2017-04-10 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
I was fortunate enough to see that first Bronzed Cowbird in the Carters' yard
on 16June 1990.

The second report (not counting the reappearance of the Carters' bird in 1991)
was, I believe, from Pritchett w of Springfield by Jim Dennis, who worked for
the CO Division of Wildlife in Fort Collins, and who had a summer place down
near the Pinyon Canyon Manuever Site in Las Animas County. I believe Jim, who
was an avid birder and long retired from DOW (aka DPW), is now living in
Maryland.

As an aside, when the ABA Convention was in Fort Collins in 2000, Jim was
walking around the hotel lobby with a bird in a ziplock bag he had just been
given by a homeowner in Loveland: a YELLOW RAIL! Nobody can figure out what
ever happened to the specimen and apparently there was no documentation of that
very important record, either.

Cobirders,

The 1990 Bronzed Cowbird was seen at the Carter's yard in Lakewood and
documented with the CBRC. The following year in May 1991 a Bronzed Cowbird
appeared again in their backyard. I do not remember how long the bird stayed
the second time but I saw it on May 12th. I recall the assumption at the time
was that it was the same bird that had visited the year before but who knows?
There are no accepted records for the second appearance (assuming that it was
not written up by anyone). There is only reference to it being reported on the
Rare Bird Alert Tape in May in the Lark Bunting.

Good Birding,

FYI, Lamar birder Jill White Smith photographed a BRONZED COWBIRD in her
backyard on April 6. She noted the red eyes were unusual and sought help on
What's This Bird facebook page who identified the species. She has posted a
couple of photos of the bird on the ABA Rare Bird Alert facebook site. Have we
had BRONZED COWBIRDS sighted in Colorado before?
