Hi all,
This past weekend, my brother and I birded around the San Luis Valley and
found a nice assortment of birds. Saturday evening, Blanca had Blue
Grosbeaks and a Bullocks Oriole along a county road outside of town. Smith
Reservoir was stunning in the evening light, and produced birds such

Thanks for the report, Scott. How amazing to know that California Gulls
might live that long. What a fortunate recovery.

Hi everyone,
We are beginning our annual fall owl banding project were we are
capturing and banding both Boreal and Northern Saw-whet Owls.
The research is in conjunction with Project Owlnet which is a
nation-wide project that targets these species.
It is a good chance to see these owls
Yesterday, around nine in the morning, more than 50 grackles took over the
joint for about 15 minutes and then swooped out. It was very dramatic and
noisy!
I’m down to one hummingbird here which I think is the Calliope female or
youngster.
I still have more than a hundred cormorants
Hi Everyone..
As many of you know Dr. Ron Ryder passed away a number of years ago.
Since his passing I have been receiving his band recoveries from the
banding laboratory.
I just received a band recovery of one of his California Gulls that he
banded on 9/16/1984 in Colorado and it was just

While walking along my patch along the South Platte River near Hudson
Gardens I watched a group of six Canada Geese flying over the river. There
is a point there where three power lines cross the river. The majority were
flying high enough to go over, but the last two where to low. Rather then
Unfortunately the weather wasn't very cooperative today. After a promising
start, a strong breeze suddenly began within an hour and a half of open
nets, and caused us to quickly shut things down. We still managed to catch
a few birds, with 15 newly-banded individuals and 2 recaptures, of 5
There were 3 immature Sabine’s off the swim beach this morning. Probably
continuing birds recently reported, but they are a fan favorite (for me
anyway). I got lucky and one flew in and landed on the swim beach not too far
away and bathed and preened for a minute. There were also 4 red-necked
The first day of banding at our GVAS station got off to a slow start, with
10 new birds of 6 species. Most of these birds appeared to be residents
and were still in active molt, so it is probable that migration isn't quite
in full swing here yet.
