[cobirds] Red-necked Stint present in central Kansas currently (July 2nd)
There is a breeding plumaged Red-necked Stint, first state record for Kansas at the Little Salt Marsh at Quivira NWR in central Kansas. The bird was just seen this morning, so it is currently there (July 2nd, 8am Central Time). This is the right month to be looking for this species in Colorado too. [cobirds] possible great-crested flycatcher - Boulder
I think I heard a great-crested flycatcher calling this morning while biking to work at about 8 along Bear Creek behind Williams Village and Bear Creek Apts in Boulder. The wheep calls were coming from high in the thick trees and I did not actually see the bird. This area is about 200m upstream from where Bear Creek crosses Baseline near 37th St. This is a species I haven't heard regularly since moving out of the midwest many years ago so it's very possible that I'm mistaken - but then I don't really know of many (any?) local birds that sound very similar. [cobirds] Reddish Egret at first NO, But Wait! - Lake Cheraw, Otero County
I got up way too early this morning and drove to Lake Cheraw to look for the Reddish Egret being reported on eBird and cobirds. When I first arrived, I stopped along Hwy 109 on the west side of the lake. I saw a lot of nice birds, including Snowy Plover and some Wilson's Phalaropes, but no egret. Next I drove into town and scanned the lake from the end of 1st Street. Lots of shorebirds, but no egret. I then had a choice to make. I wanted to go to Bent's Old Fort and I thought about my route. Finally, I decided to go back down Hwy 109. As I approached the middle of the lake I saw a truck parked with a scope sticking out of the window. I approached and introduced myself to Stan Oswald and asked if he had seen the egret. He pointed and said Right there. Sure enough, the bird had flown in. We got to see it for several minutes before it flew off to the west, probably to the small lake referenced in Brandon Percival's post yesterday. I took a couple of digiscope pictures, but my technique leaves much to be desired, apparently. Good birding, everyone.
