The first bird looks like a house rent me.

The second bird is really interesting and I don’t know what it is. That heavily
forked tail is very intriguing!

[cobirds] Lake County Bird ID

2020-08-23 Thread julieama...@gmail.com
Good evening!

Yesterday morning I hiked around Turquoise Lake, near Leadville, and
observed two birds I'm not positive in identifying.

The first looked like a House Wren, but I wasn't positive since this was
around 10,000ft. I know it's possible for them to reside at this elevation,
and it doesn't quite appear to be another wren, so I wanted to soundboard
it with you guys.

The second I managed to catch only a quick glimpse of. I am rusty with high
altitude, forest birds, and while it looked Finch-like, again, wanted to
hear thoughts.

I attached pictures to my drive where they can be viewed (unless I need to
attach these in a different manner).

[cobirds] Mourning doves- Weld County

2020-08-23 Thread Sharon Kay
I have had these two mourning doves hanging in my yard the past four days
or so. They are always on the ground when I see them and by the time I see
them I am often only four feet or so from them. They don't seem very
active. I am not in the yard much. I do not know how much time they are
actually in my yard. But I have seen them daily and twice today. Is it
possible they are sick?
Picture taken through a window with a poor cell phone camera.

[cobirds] Sharing the Joy of Birds

2020-08-23 Thread Caleb A
Hello CObirds!

Regretfully, I do not have a rare bird to report today, but I do want to
take a moment to talk about one of my growing favorite parts of birding:
making newer birders.
I love to teach, especially when I'm sharing something I love, and birds
are no exception. I'm a teenager, so there are always the occasional
awkward side glances when I tell my peers about my hobby, but I've
discovered (through many conversations) that the majority of people in *all*
age
groups are interested in birds to an extent. Not just that, but I was
pleasantly surprised to find that a lot of these people would be interested
in birding, but they just don't know how to start or how any of it works.

I am currently guiding several classmates through the beginning phases of
birding (who are already catching on pretty quickly) and I've noticed that
my family is recognizing the birds around them more often (my Grandma has a
wonderful pair of feeders that sported some great activity this past
month). For those of you who know what Nextdoor is, I've found that there
is a whole community of nonbirders who want to learn more about birds,
whether it's identification tips or just how to attract birds to their
yards to watch. I had the opportunity to show a neighborhood resident a
beautiful, cooperative Townsend's Warbler on their walk, and yesterday I
led a bird walk for some local girl scouts (unexpectedly picking up a FOY
Prairie Falcon along the way).

I'm finding that sharing birds with our friends, peers, and communities is
just one more fun aspect of birding for me and thought I'd encourage this
wonderful Colorado birding community to keep making birders! We live in a
great state for the hobby, after all...

[cobirds] Re: Blackbirds massing--is fall on its way?

2020-08-23 Thread Caleb A
Especially considering I'm starting to see flocks of geese again, flocks of
spizellas heading south, and more shorebirds and passerines coming through,
I think fall is on the way!

[cobirds] June--August birds - Douglas

2020-08-23 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Because of Covid & because of the smoky polluted air, Urling & I have
birdwatched only close to home for 2-3 months -- within a 5-mile radius of our
house.    Our lists total 20-30 species per day; 66 species in June, 68 in
July, 57 so far this month. No jawbreakers, but lots of reliable friends. We
have counted more Turkey Vultures & Red-winged Blackbirds than any others. We
have daily 2 chickadee species, 2 nuthatches, 2 jays, 2 goldfinches. The
fledgling towhees burgeoned to at least a dozen at a time under our feeders,
and fledgling Black-headed Grosbeaks hit 8. Both have now declined some. Four
humm. species, but Calliope only 2-3 days, Rufous & Black-chinned only
occasionally.
