We saw that bird, too.  There was also an adult Forster's present, its 
black cap mostly intact, but fading.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 8/22/21

A busy opening day with an unusual mix of birds.  80 birds, 14 species.  
Not many migrants, but a wide assortment of species including some fairly 
common but not usually captured:

Mourning Dove 1 
Western Wood-pewee 4
Willow Flycatcher 1
Western Kingbird 1 (common summer resident, but most have left before 
banding starts, we had 1 in 2019 and no others in the past 15 years)
Black-billed Magpie 1 (2 in past 15 years)
Black-capped Chickadee 4
House Wren 25 (24 of which were hatch year birds)
Yellow Warbler 22 new, 1 banded in 2020, 1 in 2019
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
Wilson's Warbler 2
Chipping Sparrow 4
Song Sparrow 6
Black-headed Grosbeak 2 
Blue Grosbeak 4 (1 adult male, 1 older hatch year, and 2 just out of the 
nest)

We will be open 6 days a week, weather permitting through October 23.

7:30-8:30 most weekdays, and 8-9, 9-10, and 10-11 on weekends.  We look

[cobirds] Labor Day Circum-Lake-ation (again)

Good afternoon, friends!

Some of you may recall that, last year, I decided I would bird my way all the 
way 'round Cherry Creek Reservoir on Labor Day. Several folks joined me for 
some or all of that walk. We tallied over 70 species.

I’m going to do it again this year (Monday, September 6). I will leave the Lake 
Loop about 6:30 (as I did last year), and go clockwise around the lake, 
including the 12-mile Trail (which means heading north on the Cherry Creek 
Trail and/or the Railroad Bed Trail). 

My experience this year in birding Cherry Creek State Park has been that the 
number of both species and individuals has been “down”. I wonder if that will 
be borne out on Labor Day as well!

Let me know if you’re interested in joining in. That way we can share contact 
information for specific segment meet-ups.

Sorry for being delinquent on posting birds here timely.

As a follow up to Dave’s post, I rode down to Chatfield Saturday morning. I

11 Black Terns
6 Common Terns
1 Forster's Tern
1 Marbled Godwit
2 California Gulls
~150 Ring-billed Gulls
Many Pelicans, maybe a dozen DC Cormorants.

So our shorebird search yielded 1 shorebird, but it was a good one.  
Earlier today at Cherry Creek in Aurora (Arapaho County), we got a total of

Plovers were not continuing this morning, though there was quite the group 
of shore birds at the same run-off spot including 170 Ring-billed Gull, 6 
Franklin's Gull, 2 California Gull, 1 Great Egret, 8 Snowy Egret, 9 Baird's 
Sandpiper, 11 Killdeer. Exciting as it's within walking distance from my 
house -- after birding for about 20 minutes, I noticed I was just over 900 
steps on the day. Ha!

[cobirds] Black-Bellied Plover (not American Golden), SW Weld County

Updating the ID on my previous post, to correctly reflect they were 
Black-Bellied Plovers, not American Golden Plovers, after reviewing field 
guides and seeing they had white under tail coverts. Still -- a very cool, 
unexpected lifer on my way to dinner this evening.

Checklist has been updated with actual media, rather than back of camera 
shots.

[cobirds] American Golden Plovers SW Weld Co

On my way to dinner spotted 3 American Golden Plovers in Erie just after 7 
pm (Weld County side). Checklist has back of camera photos for now. Don't 
believe these are black-bellied but either way exciting birds and lifers 
for me.

They were in a field with 250 gulls. This field has had gulls on and off 
the last few weeks following rain. The gulls typically leave by 730 am or 
so. I observe from side of road, while there is a road through the field, 
I'm pretty sure it is a private oil field road.
