[cobirds] morning grounding, Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, Adams Co., Sept. 10

2022-09-10 Thread Ted Floyd
Hey, all.

When Adrianna Nelson and Hannah Floyd and I started iNatting this gloomy
Saturday morning, Sept. 10, 2022, at the Havana Ponds Parking Lot at Rocky
Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, Adams Co., it was 8° Celsius
with a cold drizzle, and I confess that I muttered to myself, "*Why are we
doing this again?*" A couple minutes later, as we were walking south toward
the ponds, the answer was evident: The fields were full of *Say phoebes,*
the skies aflutter with swallows, and the trail directly ahead swarming
with sparrows.

Our first two hours out there were dazzling, the next four solidly good.

Best of all were the sparrows. Migrants included 1 late *grasshopper,* 30+
*chipping* (almost all juveniles), 2 *clay-colored,* 10+ *Brewer,* 12
*lark,* 75+ *vesper,* and 20+ *savannah.* Also 10+ *lark **buntings* still
hanging on.

Warblers were so-so, highlighted by 1 *Townsend.* Cardinalids included
a *lazuli
bunting* and a couple of *western tanagers.*

Shorebirds were poor, all things considered, but an *upland sandpiper*
overflying Lake Ladora was magnus.

Nice falcon show, including a *merlin* and 2 *peregrine falcons.*

Miscellany: 1 *woody* and 2 *hoodies,* a lost *common nighthawk,* 2 *soras,*
2 *burrowing owls,* 1 *gray flycatcher,* 1 *blue-gray gnatsnatcher,* at
least *5 rock wrens,* 1 *marsh wren,* 1 *gray catbird,* and 1 *sage
thrasher.*

We somehow missed Canada goose, and wound up with 89 species during our
time at The Arsenal.

The insects--and insect photography--were outrageous. See Hannah's content
at Facebook's "Arthropods Colorado & Wyoming" group.

Re: [cobirds] SULPHUR-bellied FLYCATCHER, Chico basin 9/10

2022-09-10 Thread Peter Burke
Thanks Duane,
I think there should be a new category for rare birds in Colorado — 1st
state record except that Duane already saw it like 20 years ago :)

I found this bird while leading a trip for Bird Conservency of the Rockies.
The good news is that everyone in our group was able to get on the bird
after it flushed from the Russian Olives, but then it flew out of sight.

I hope others are able to relocate it this afternoon or tomorrow. How long
did your bird stick around for?

Peter

MacGilivray's Warbler-2
Wilson's Warbler-11
Yellow Warbler-2
Orange-crowned Warbler-3
House Wren-1
Western Tanager-4
Green-tailed Towhee-5
Common Yellowthroat-1
Song Sparrow-2
Lincoln's Sparrow-1

Sightings outside of the banding station include daily flyovers of Pinyon

flyby.

Happy birding,
Megan Miller

Re: [cobirds] SULPHUR-bellied FLYCATCHER, Chico basin 9/10

2022-09-10 Thread 'DUANE NELSON' via Colorado Birds
Great find, and within the expected window of Sulphur-bellied Flycatchers
showing up out of range in North America.

I found the first state record of Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher at Adobe Creek
Reservoir (Bent County) on September 18th, 2002. It was the first record for
the interior of the continent, although there had been records during the same
window of time in Louisiana and New England. Here is a picture I took on
September 18, 2002, of the Colorado Bird. This was a bird I didn't expect to be
seen again in Colorado. Many Colorado birders of an earlier generation got to
see this bird.

[cobirds] Great DFO bird trips on the calendar now

2022-09-10 Thread David Suddjian
Hi CoBirders,

Fall migration is unfolding and DFO has a fine free field trip lineup
developing this fall going to all sorts of hotspots. New trips are added
regularly. Take a look here at our September and October offerings, many of
which have openings:
https://dfobirds.org/FieldTrips/UpcomingTrips.aspx

I wish to highlight a few:
* Two far ranging trips are just next week include *North Park* on Sept 14
and *Southeastern CO* on Sept 16. Both have a couple openings.

* Laura Steaman is leading to *Lagerman** Res* in Boulder Co on Sept 18.

* Long time CO birder and leader Norm Lewis is leading to *Northeast CO* on
Sept 21 targeting areas in Weld and Morgan counties.

Looking for an *evening outing*? We have two at *Chatfield SP* on Sept 15
and Sept 23. This can be a great time of day in the park during this
season, and we will look for Sabine's Gull, maybe a jaeger and who knows
what?

Father ahead, a DFO overnight trip to *western Colorado* on Oct 16-18 will
target Mesa and Delta counties.
