Subject: [cobirds] Goldfinch seed feeding behavior

Birders -

I’ve noticed a change in Goldfinch (both American and Lesser) behavior over the
past 6 years or so.

I live in Roxborough Village, and going back 5-6 years, we had a dramatic
increase in the numbers of Goldfinches. Two foot-tall mesh thistle feeders
would be covered with a dozen Goldfinches each, with easily a dozen or more
waiting to feed. It was normal for them to consume 1/2 to 2/3 of the seed from
each feeder daily.

Local populations crashed roughly 3-4 years ago, with almost no Goldfinches
showing up at my feeders. Oddly, at that time, I noticed that the remaining
Goldfinches had gravitated to my (shelled) sunflower seed feeders. This
continued for a roughly 3 years, with only one or two Goldfinches showing up at
a time.

So far, this seemed normal as populations shift, and Goldfinches are known to
eat sunflowers, but they were completely ignoring my thistle feeders.

This year has brought more Goldfinches - as many as 10 at a time - but the
unusual thing is that they ALL are eating sunflower seeds and ALL ignoring my
thistle feeders.

I dumped all my older seed and have completely refilled my thistle feeders
twice, and have moved one to the front yard, but the Goldfinches continue to
eschew my thistle feeders and in both front and back yards now exclusively eat
sunflower seeds.

At the same time, House Finches are also ignoring my thistle feeders.

While it’s possible I’ve purchased a bad or old batch of thistle, I’d like to
think that the bird supply retailer I use hasn’t received bad seed.

So my question to the group is whether anyone else is seeing Goldfinches at
their feeders refusing to eat thistle?

Thanks!

Jim Tyler

[cobirds] Goldfinch seed feeding behavior

2023-05-29 Thread Jim Tyler

Birders -

I’ve noticed a change in Goldfinch (both American and Lesser) behavior
over the past 6 years or so.

I live in Roxborough Village, and going back 5-6 years, we had a
dramatic increase in the numbers of Goldfinches. Two foot-tall mesh
thistle feeders would be covered with a dozen Goldfinches each, with
easily a dozen or more waiting to feed. It was normal for them to
consume 1/2 to 2/3 of the seed from each feeder daily.

Local populations crashed roughly 3-4 years ago, with almost no
Goldfinches showing up at my feeders. Oddly, at that time, I noticed
that the remaining Goldfinches had gravitated to my (shelled) sunflower
seed feeders. This continued for a roughly 3 years, with only one or two
Goldfinches showing up at a time.

So far, this seemed normal as populations shift, and Goldfinches are
known to eat sunflowers, but they were completely ignoring my thistle
feeders.

This year has brought more Goldfinches - as many as 10 at a time - but
the unusual thing is that they ALL are eating sunflower seeds and ALL
ignoring my thistle feeders.

I dumped all my older seed and have completely refilled my thistle
feeders twice, and have moved one to the front yard, but the Goldfinches
continue to eschew my thistle feeders and in both front and back yards
now exclusively eat sunflower seeds.

At the same time, House Finches are also ignoring my thistle feeders.

While it’s possible I’ve purchased a bad or old batch of thistle, I’d
like to think that the bird supply retailer I use hasn’t received bad seed.

So my question to the group is whether anyone else is seeing Goldfinches
at their feeders refusing to eat thistle?

Thanks!

Jim Tyler

[cobirds] RFI: birding Denver without car

2023-05-29 Thread Joseph E. Mosley
Hello Cobirders,

I am a student traveling to Denver for a Chronic Wasting Disease conference
over the next few days. I have Friday afternoon free for birding, but I do
not have a car available. I have 5 or 6 targets for the Denver area since I
am from Missouri, though any good birding spots would do. Do you have any
recommendations for locations close-ish to downtown? I would also be down
to join and pay for gas if someone could give me a ride for birding. Feel
free to email off the listserv or text me.

Good birding,

[cobirds] PHOTO REQUEST - Showcase your best photos from winter in Colorado Birds!

2023-05-29 Thread Peter Burke
Colorado Birds is seeking photographs for the summer issue, which will be
published just ahead of the Annual Convention this July at the Copper
Mountain Resort in coordination with WFO.

Please send us your high resolution photos of rare or unusual sightings
taken from December 2022 to February 2023, and be sure to include the date
and location along with your name so that we can give you credit!

Of particular interest for this issue are the following:

*Bohemian Waxwings! *We will likely feature a Bohemian on the cover, so if
you have good pics from last winter's irruption, this is your chance!
(Hint: we look for images in crisp focus with minimal background stuff like
branches, etc. and room at the top for the journal name. See past issues
for examples.)

Eurasian Wigeon
Mexican Duck
Shorebirds
Western Gull
Short-billed Gull
Great Black-bscked Gull
Glaucous-winged Gull
Yellow-billed Loon
Pacific Loon
Pacific Wren
Sedge Wren
Varied Thrush
Cassia Crossbill
Golden-crowned Sparrow
Warblers
Northern Cardinal

*Please send photos to edi...@cobirds.org by June 8. *

*Photo Submission Guidelines:*
Photos from August - October 2022

Photos must be your own, taken in Colorado from Dec. 2022-Feb. 2023. By
submitting photos, you give Colorado Birds permission to reproduce in any
issue and on the CFO website. We always credit images with the
photographer’s name.

Please use the following naming convention: *American Robin (or AMRO)
-20191004-Chatfield-Adams-JJAudubon*.

Minimum quality for interior publication use is 750 x 900 pixels. To be
considered for the journal cover, photos must be at least 2625 pixels
(vertically) x 1725 pixels (horizontally). Please send original files in
the largest resolution possible (300 dpi is preferable). We will crop and
resize as needed.

Best,

Peter Burke

Thanks for the reply. Is this a normal occurrence at your feeders?
