Re: [cobirds] Burrowing Owls and security guards, Adams county
I just read the ABA has implemented 'sanctuary hot spots', where birders can bird freely without fear of intimidation, deportation, or ID questioning. Below is a partial list of these hot spots..Walden PondsBaseline ReservoirGregory CanyonValmont ReservoirGreenlee PreserveGlenn WalbekCastle Rock, COSent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE DROIDOn Apr 1, 2017 12:50 PM, 'Norm Lewis' via Colorado Birdswrote:I understand, and this why I encourage other birders not to let themselves be pushed around for no particular good reason. I make it a point never to pass a "private property" sign, to cross fences or enter anywhere that says "keep out". However, I find that more and more I am being harrassed for being in areas which appear have public access. "Golf Cart Boy" out at Latham once called the sheriff on me (he did it while I was standing there, so I know he actually did it; I overheard the conversation). I just stood there while he yelled at me that I was ignoring him, to which I replied, "Yep". He left, but I waited around for the authorities, who of course never appeared. They probably got a good laugh out of his report of a miscreant birder. Anyway, if law enforcement gives me a valid reason way I should vacate an area, vacate I will. Yesterday's "officer" (who must have looking desperately for a reason to justify her existence) just sputtered about "DIA" and "private property" and really had no good reason why I should leave the area. That's probably enough on this subject. Please obey all property signs and follow the ABA Code of Ethics. But I submit that there is no reason why birders should be bullied just because we have a reputation for being rather passive. I am afraid to go on any birding expeditions out of the country right now, or to even try to get on a plane to go somewhere in this country. I was harassed and followed by security once for birding at the Xeriscape Gardens in Colorado Springs - apparently because it is owned by the local utility company the fact that I had a scarf and binoculars made me a terrorist. I just don't trust the 'authorities' are always going to do the right thing because of my appearance. I have heard the same thing from several birders of color. I encourage those of you who are less marginalized to keep standing up when people push you like that because you might be indirectly helping out someone who wouldn't be able to do so. Re: [cobirds] Cherry Creek jaeger continues
Folks,I and others were able to spend some quality time with the Cherry Creek jaeger, including close looks and photographs. I and others are convinced the bird is a juvenile, intermediate morph Parasitic Jaeger. I will add close up photos later showing a long, thin bill with small nail, buffy undertail coverts, considerable white in the base of the primaries above and short, pointed central tail projections. The bird is putting on a show from various points in the lake.Glenn WalbekCastle Rock, COSent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE DROID -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. Re: [cobirds] Cherry Creek jaeger, Sabine's Gulls
I was able to return to Cherry Creek after a couple of appointments. After seeing and photographing the juvi jaeger, I believe like Joe Roller, it is a Parasitic Jaeger. It has no 'double flash', is warm brown and has a nail about 1/3 the length of the thin bill. Bird is actively chasing gulls. Re: [cobirds] Myiarchus flycatcher, Roxborough SP
Folks,I spoke to Peter Pereira. The myiarchus photographed yesterday was just outside the arboretum at Chatfield, now known as the Denver Botanical Garden. I and others suspect this is a Brown-crested Flycatcher, likely the same one from 3 weeks ago (see Mark Chavez's posts). Peter Pereira posted a photo to a Cornell Bird Facebook page asking for ID of a Myiarchus flycatcher from Roxborough SP, Douglas Co., and the photo was taken yesterday (11/17/15). Looks more brown-crested than ash-throated (because of back color), but there's just one photo available so far and it is fairly small, even on a large monitor. I'm not saying what it is from this one little image! We don't know where the bird was actually found, but the bird was perched in a juniper with snow on it. I guess this could be brown-crested from Chatfield Botanical Gardens from a few weeks ago, but who knows. Birds fly. [cobirds] Possible Arctic Tern, Chatfield Douglas, Co.
Folks, I spent some time studying an interesting sterna tern on the Chatfield sandspit this morning. The bird is small, with a small dark bill, except a reddish center and inner bill. In flight, the primaries were fairly uniform gray with white secondaries and secondary covert tips. The tips of the primaries are dark. There was no hint of a dark secondary bar. Resting, the primaries look a tad darker than the mantle with pale outlines, but gray not black. I suspect the bird is a juvenile (see worn juvenile in Sibley's guide).
