Hi all:

As I've said to quite a few people around the country, I'd put Colorado's
birding community up against nearly any other state's, both in terms of
skill/knowledge and dedication, and the redpolls just offer yet another great
example.

Hoary Redpoll eBird data from January 2013 (some/many flagged records yet to
clear review)

Common Redpoll eBird data from January 2013 (some/many flagged records yet to
clear review)

This redpoll hit was something for which I had hoped would happen during my 14
years in Colorado; to no avail. I had figured that I had more experience with
Hoary than nearly any other resident and figured that I could find the state's
first if we just got a good redpoll hit. Of course, single feeders in the
state are now supporting more redpolls than were found in the state during my
14 years there, all put together!

I encourage all to study up on the separation of exilipes race Hoary Redpoll
and Common Redpoll, a feat that can be quite tricky at times. I suggest,
particularly, David Sibley's excellent treatment of the problem --
http://www.sibleyguides.com/2008/01/a-character-index-for-redpoll-identification/.
I suggest this so that we can find as many GOOD Hoaries as we can this year,
because it might be another 35 years before the next good redpoll hit!

Enjoy,
