I observed a pied-billed grebe (solitary) fleeing (me) in a manner that surprised me. (at Pella Crossing, Hygiene) I was quiet and all was quiet around so it was not the result of a startling or significant threat. It dove under (as expected), resurfaced some distance away, but only it's head came up, for about 3 seconds, then repeated several times as it put distance between us. It only came up completely after about 5 minutes and 75 yds and then felt safe and stayed up. The gulp of air was so quick that I could never get specs on it before it was down again. If I had not observed the entire event I would have thought the quick resurfacing was of a turtle.
