Two early evenings ago, I had a male Ring-necked Pheasant strut through my
backyard. I was hoping he would stop at the close by birdfeeder but he headed
instead for a large brush pile we have in an outlaying area of our yard.

The Neotropic Cormorant at Cherry Creek was at the SW corner marina at
7.40am with c15 Double-crested Cormorants (it was not present at 6.15am -
not were there any cormorants at that time)
Also a Great Egret and 8 Bonaparte's Gulls today

Thanks to Cheryl's post yesterday, we saw this breeding plumaged loon in the
afternoon. It was with many West. Grebes, east of the fishing pier. Scope used
to find it. It was not feeding during the time we saw it, was still present
when we left around 5:00 pm.

My wife and I returned on Monday from a nice tour by the Nature Conservancy to
their Fox Ranch property in Yuma County (well known to Ted and others) and then
on toWray, Colorado to see Greater Prairie Chickens putting on a wonderful
show. We then spent a couple hours at Bonny State Park
In Grand Junction for a Grand Valley Audubon presentation, Urling and I went to
Colorado National Monument to chase this year's Black-chinned Sparrow.
(Apparently observers have seen single birds several times [like two] in the
past five years.) We spent an hour or more in the rain, some of
COBirders,

In the process of filling out a Verification form for the Black-chinned
Sparrow, I note that the field guides show the species with a gray
breast and belly, the same color as the head. When we saw this bird
yesterday, it had light-colored breast -- cream or ivory -- that
contrasted with the

Those ash you refer to in Colorado National Monument are Singleleaf Ash
(Fraxinus anomala), a little known native tree of the Southwest that barely
gets into our area. The anomala comes from its having a single,
shovelhead-looking leaf, instead of the compound leaves of other ash.
Hi all,
visited Red Rocks again today and after a short wait, the Curve-billed
Thrasher, White-throated Sparrow, GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW and Harris's
Sparrow
all showed at Red Rocks Trading Post between 10.45 and 11:15.

I was lucky enough to find a Louisiana Waterthrush at Tempel Grove in NE
Bent County late this morning. This bird was present through late
afternoon, and at least 7 birders other than me saw it. It was
marginally cooperative, flying far up and down the Ft. Lyon Canal both
east and
The loggerhead shrikes have returned to WCR 398 about .75 miles east of WCR 59
in Keenesburg. We also had a male green-backed lesser goldfinch at our feeders
on Saturday. We have been getting about one of these each year for the past 4
or 5 years.
