more comments:
when using the result obtained from the sqltransformer as a plain xml file, the 
pipe works fine. It seems like it only breaks when the sqltransformer is 
involved in the pipe.

it's definitively not the same as bug 19770. I've patched the xalan.jar and it 
stills breaks.

Could this be the same as bug 19770 ?

If not, could you try to reproduce this bug outside Cocoon and file it as a
XSLTC bug?

Using Xalan instead of XSLTC should also help.
