To get Coda to compile I needed to hack the Makefiles. I've included diffs below. It's possible that the development system expects build-time implicit library recursion, and binutils-2.11 doesn't provide that. Also it would be helpful to export LD_RUN_PATH=$(LIBDIR) (or the appropriate variable
