Re: [CODE4LIB] Post-election statement affirming diversity from Code4Lib?

2016-11-14 Thread Michelle Lubatti
I am so sorry, Kate, that you have been a victim on this email list! As
you can see from everyone voting for a statement, we all want to reiterate
that the members of this list should value diversity and respect toward
others.

I've been subjected to a lot of hate speech on Twitter (even from
librarians!), & their words & approval of destructive behaviors has been
heart-rending. Seeing people who professed in the past to value diversity
now mocking & demeaning other people is a sad time.

A statement appears to be necessary after all. :(

Thank you for suggesting and working on this Bohyun!!! We really
appreciate it!

It saddens me that something so obviously intrinsic to this organization is
thought to be necessary. Usually an organization issues such a statement
because their practices along such lines have been called into question,
not because of the result of an election.

Btw, what about Luddites, Trump supporters and those who would want the
whole world to program in COBOL? Are we to be as accepting of those
philistines as well? ;-)

Peace, love and light to all! (no, really)

I'm usually more of an lurker than a commenter on this list, but I just
want to say that in this political climate, I think public stands for
diversity and against hatred are incredibly valuable and important,
whether or not any incidents have yet occurred. Thanks to Bohyun for
suggesting it.
