I don't understand what you're suggesting, Tim.
I understand that you (like many) need to look at budgets and expenses.
But how does the pre-conf being free hurt you there? If you can't
afford the extra hotel etc., then you may not be able to go to the
pre-conf, but what can the organizers

I think the idea is if the preconference had a cost to attendees, its
sponsorship money could be used to defer the cost of the rest of the
conference for everyone.

Tim,
With all due respect, pre-conferences are optional. Some
pre-conferences have required,/will require registration to keep the
size manageable. If you can't justify the cost of sending your staff
to the preconferences, then don't.
Despite Gabe's link out to a past post, no one has pasted the
In the grand scheme of things, $150 for a conference is very low, and
$320 for a pre conference is low, as well. This doesn't make them
cheap or mean that everyone who would like to go, can go. I fully
understand that $25 is in inconsequential amount of money… Unless it
is your $25.
I think that
We would like to use an iPad-compatible Bluetooth barcode scanner to scan
Codabar barcodes into form inputs of a web app. Does anybody have any

On the interwebs, I'm seeing products such as these that claim to be iPad
compatible and so would be good

Hi All,
I'm putting together an ontology for a collection either using CIDOC-CRM, or a
mix of CIDOC-CRM and FOAF. I don't need the whole CIDOC-CRM ontology. Is it
okay to just use the classes I need or should I include the super classes which
they belong to?
Thanks for the help,
Tim

Hey folks,
There's been increasing discussion and interest about cataloging around
this community (and others like it) for quite a while. I found some
co-conspirators and we are planning to propose a pre-conference on
cataloging/library metadata creation geared towards the huddled code4lib
masses
I am currently learning how to do EAD coding through the Northwest Digital
Archives. I'd attend a session on EAD and/or DACS.

If it helps people budget, for reasons I don't understand, to call the
pre-conf something other than a pre-conf, that's potentially doable.
I do like that it's the beginning so people can skip the pre-conf if
that sort of activity (or the particular topics offered) are not useful
to them
+1 to the below...

It's not the name that is the problem. Jason summarized my point clearly.
Why do we need to define workshops or hackfests as pre-conference?
Why not just say this is the conference: hackfests, workshops, talks,
great people, and brew-tasting? And maybe more people would participate
or benefit

Hi Jeff,
Thank you for the info!
The scanner runs on two AAA batteries.
Their literature cites that as an advantage (no downtime for recharging) vs.
the internal rechargeable batteries of some of the other scanners. For use by
library staff, I'm inclined to lean toward rechargeable. How
Thanks, Karen, that's the direction I was going to go, but just wasn't sure.
