[CODE4LIB] Announcing Code4Lib Mid-Atlantic
Code4Libbers, A few months ago, we kicked around the idea of forming a Code4Lib Mid-Atlantic (aka the Philadelphia and greater Tri-State area) group and conference, and we got an overwhelmingly positive reaction to the idea. Therefore, it's my pleasure to announce the formation of the Code4Lib Mid-Atlantic group. For those interested, I've started a wiki page that can be found here: http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/Code4lib_Mid-Atlantic As well, as part of our Tech Trifecta week at Falvey Memorial Library, Villanova University, we'll be holding our inaugural meeting on Wednesday, Oct 17th, 2012. Details on the meeting can be found on the Wiki page or the Tech Trifecta announcement included below. Along with the conference, we're looking for volunteers, not only for the kick-off conference, but for general long-term organizational duties. Positions that we know we need include a social media expert, an IRC guy/gal, and a social functions organizer. We also need volunteers to help us with needs we as yet don't know we need (and feel free to identify them). If anyone interested in volunteering their time, please visit the wiki and add your name to the sign-up list. Questions? Comments? Excited about an idea that you've always wanted to implement in a code4lib group but never had the chance? Feel free to direct all of your comments and ideas to me at david.us...@villanova.edumailto:david.us...@villanova.edu. I'm very excited about kicking this off and I hope you join me on the 17th. Uspal Technology Development Specialist Falvey Memorial Library Phone: 610-519-8954 Email: david.us...@villanova.edumailto:david.us...@villanova.edu Greetings from the Villanova Tech Trifecta Team, Falvey Memorial Library at Villanova University is proud to announce a series of events, nicknamed the Tech Trifecta, taking place during the week of October 15th, 2012. The three conferences making up the Tech Trifecta week include: * VuFind Summit 2012http://vufind.org/wiki/vufind_summit_2012 (Oct 15th and 16th) -- The follow-up to 2010's 2.0 planning meeting will include detailed discussion of the new release and opportunities to network with other VuFind users. * Code4Lib Mid-Atlantic 2012http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/Code4lib_Mid-Atlantic (Oct 17th)-- Code4Lib is a volunteer-driven collective of hackers, designers, architects, curators, catalogers, artists and instigators from around the world, who largely work for and with libraries, archives and museums on technology stuff. The Mid-Atlantic conference is a kick-off for a Philadelphia Area/Tri-State chapter of the organization. * VuStuff IIIhttp://vustuff.org (Oct 18th) -- VuStuff is an annual conference on the intersections between technology and scholarly communication. It takes place every Fall at Villanova University's Falvey Memorial Library. This year's conference, VuStuff III, will seek presentations from regional librarians on technology and scholarly communication in their respective libraries. We hope to foster an ongoing conversation among regional libraries, in order to further the development of technology in service of scholarly communication. If you haven't already signed up for this year's event, I encourage you to do so ASAP as space is once again limited (VuStuff has hit capacity every year it has been held). For details or to register for this year's events, follow the links above or head to: http://vustuff.org/vustuff/tech-trifecta As well, we're still accepting proposals for talks at all three conferences. Those who are interested in presenting can sign up for a speaker's slot at: http://vustuff.org/vustuff/tech-trifecta/submit-a-proposal/ Thank you for your time and we hope to see you the week of October 15th. Re: [CODE4LIB] A bibliography in XMP inside PDF
Hi Simon, Thanks for your reply. I have used xmpincl and recently stumbled upon pdfx [1] for producing PDF/A compliant files (which require some XMP). I started work on extending pdfx's functionality to support some more URIs and embedded reference lists [2], but reading through some of the XMP and PDF/A specifications I got a bit put off by the limitations imposed on the RDF that can be included as XMP in PDF/A and started wondering if it's actually possible. I wanted to say I had found the Citation Typing Ontology, but then saw it is part of SPAR. Having read about efforts to get the references from a document by parsing text, I thought it might make sense (and be possible) to put a machine-readable version in the document. I haven't found anyone who had done this (yet), so I started wondering why. Is it too obvious to write about? Or is it impossible? Eventually I'd like to have it automatically created at the same time BibTeX creates the 'normal' bibliography for my pdfLaTeX document. And if the PDF/A standard allows it, have it in such a way that it complies to the long-term archival PDF standard. It appears, however, that PDF/A-1 allows the XMP description of the document itself to have only one author [1], which makes me doubt the use of PDF/A in general. If I manage to get it working, could it be a topic of interest for the Code4Lib Journal? [CODE4LIB] 2nd CfP - 2nd international Workshop on Semantic Digital Archives (SDA 2012)
Apologies for cross-posting. Please forward to interested parties. *** ** CALL FOR PAPERS ** --- 2nd International Workshop on Semantic Digital Archives(SDA) in conjunction with the 16th Int. Conference on Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries (TPDL) 27th September 2012 in Paphos, Cyprus http://sda2012.dke-research.de/ --- OBJECTIVES: The workshop Semantic Digital Archives aims to promote and discuss sophisticated knowledge representation and knowledge management solutions specifically designed for improving Archival Information Systems. It can be expected that using Semantic (Web) technologies in general and Linked Data in particular can mature the area of digital archiving and preservation, as well as technologically tighten the natural bond between digital libraries and digital archives, which are approaching this topic from different views (e.g., there might be promising combinations of pertinence and provenance models since those are traditionally the prevailing knowledge organization principles of the library and archiving community, respectively). Semantic representations of contextual knowledge about cultural heritage objects enhance organization and access of data and knowledge. In order to achieve a comprehensive investigation, the information seeking and document triage behaviors of users have to be included in the research as well. For the purpose of a comprehensive investigation of the topic, it is intended to bring together the digital libraries community, the digital archiving community and the semantic technologies community. This full day workshop will be an exciting opportunity for collaboration and cross-fertilization. We also explicitly encourage a closer dialogue between the technical oriented communities with people from the (digital) humanities and social sciences, as well as cultural heritage institutions in general in order to approach the topic from all relevant angles and perspectives. TOPICS OF INTEREST We intend to have an open discussion on topics related to the general subject of Semantic Digital Archives. Hence, we welcome contributions that focus on, but are not limited to: * Ontologies linked data for digital archives and digital libraries (including multimedia archives) * Semantic search semantic information retrieval in digital archives and digital libraries (including multimedia archives) * Implementations and evaluations of semantic digital archives * Visualization and exploration of content in large digital archives * User interfaces for semantic digital libraries * User interfaces for intelligent information retrieval (including multimedia information retrieval) * User studies focusing on end-user needs and information seeking behavior of end-users (document triage) * Semantic (Web) services implementing the OAIS standard * Logical theories for digital archives * Theoretical and practical archiving frameworks using Semantic (Web) technologies * Semantic or logical provenance models for digital archives or digital libraries * Knowledge evolution * Information integration/semantic ingest (e.g. from digital libraries) * Trust for ingest data security/integrity check for long-term storage of archival records * Semantic extensions of emulation/virtualization methodologies for digital archives * Semantic long-term storage and hardware organization tailored for digital archives * Migration strategies based on Semantic (Web) technologies SUBMISSION DETAILS: Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research papers related to the aforementioned topics. We invite: * regular papers (8 to 12 pages) * short papers (2 to 6 pages) All submissions are required to be in PDF format. [CODE4LIB] Online Room Reservations
Hi everyone, We are looking for a simple system to allow students (and others) to self-schedule study rooms in the library. I started to build a solution in SharePoint 2010, but before I go to far I want to see what other libraries do. We don't have a dedicated library server to install anything on, so I prefer a hosted solution that is free, or very minimal. It would be great if it was mobile phone friendly too (iOS, Android). Thanks for any advice you can offer. Re: [CODE4LIB] Online Room Reservations
LibCal from Springshare is excellent in this regard. We're about to replace an aging, unmaintainable solution with LibCal. It has all the settings we needed to stay with our existing, overly complicated set of rules. It's not free. We're working in the $899 version just fine. http://springshare.com/libcal/ On Tue, Jun 12, 2012 at 5:16 PM, Ingersoll, Ryan ingerso...@spu.edu wrote: Hi everyone, We are looking for a simple system to allow students (and others) to self-schedule study rooms in the library.
