Which then makes me wonder, is it the lack of FrameMaker software, itself, or have you encountered errors opening such files? Reminds me of efforts in preserving old video games, we really should try to preserve the ability to run old software too, despite copyright, particularly where vendors don't exist any more. (Unlike Adobe, in this example.) Back to opening old FM files, we have to potentially deal with the change from FrameRoman text encoding to Unicode in versions after 7.2, but this may still be in the realm of possibility. Posts from 2010 on the Adobe forums say: Just today I found a CD-ROM with FrameMaker 3 demo files (for the > Macintosh). > The problem with seemingly missing fonts can be solved by editing the font > mappings in maker.ini. > But the problem with missing characters cannot be solved this way. From: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3048805 Seeing FM3 files opening in FM7 or later versions, made me then wonder if having a copy of FM1 or 2 would really be necessary to open such files. Sure enough, if you get a message saying a file can't be opened with this version of FrameMaker, that usually means it's a newer-version file: FM is usually quite good about backwards compatibility. The message usually > indicates that you've gotten files that are a newer release than the 7.0 > that you are using. From: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440870 Again in 2010, this time on a thread involving errors in opening FMv3 files, someone tried opening a file that failed to open in v5, in v4, but it didn't work in either. Apparently this version also predates a "heroic open" option which may try to bypass errors and read it anyway: Got your files, but unfortunately I've been unable to open them in FM4. [CODE4LIB] reading early versions of FrameMaker...
At PARC, we have some digital documents from the early '90's in FrameMaker version 1 and 2. But we have no versions of FrameMaker suitable for opening them, and re-rendering them in a more accessible format. I'm wondering if others have faced this issue in making archives accessible, and if so, what they did about it? Bill

I am driving, so I can take any extra beer home with me! However, for airplanes, the plastic zip-lock bags and put in the middle of the suitcase wrapped with clothing has worked for me in the past, but I never had one break, so I am not sure what would happen if I did. The diapers do sound like a good idea though. Another option are these beer diapers: http://goo.gl/AMCPx. I've used them on several trips and they work like a charm. I'm bringing several, so will likely have a couple left over for folks who find a Bloomington beer that they want to take back. Wow, I'd hate to do a border crossing with exploded bottles. I've driven from PA to FL with cases in picnic coolers. Freeze some ice packs. I use the flexible plastic types. Cool brew -- then include several ice packs in the center of the cooler. -- I have never tried, but could work... Fill empties 1/2 way with water, leave uncapped (allow for expansion of H2O), freeze. Once frozen -- use your capping tool to cap the bottles, include in the mix. Be sure to label frozen water as such -- avoid confusion :) James Gilbert, BS, MLIS Systems Librarian Whitehall Township Public Library 3700 Mechanicsville Road Whitehall, PA 18052 610-432-4330 ext: 203 -Original Message- From: Code for Libraries [mailto:CODE4LIB@LISTSERV.ND.EDU] On Behalf Of Joshua Gomez Sent: Monday, January 24, 2011 12:11 PM To: CODE4LIB@LISTSERV.ND.EDU Subject: Re: [CODE4LIB] Craft Brew Drinkup at Code4lib 2011 Do you guys have any tips on transporting your brews? Nick's is a good place to go, but if it's crowded, Buffa Louie's around the corner on Indiana Ave. (in the old Gable's/Book Nook restaurant) also has a lot of televisions. Another couple spots with good football TV watching are just north of the downtown square - Scotty's at 7th and Walnut St or Coaches at 7th and College Ave. Try Nick's or any of those places and more than likely there will be some room to sit and watch.
