That would be Amazon CloudSearch.

It costs (roughly) from $75/mo (small instance, ~1MM documents) to $500/mo
(xl instance, ~8MM docs).

It isn't thrilling. Yet.

We use ES for indexing and searchability of historical textcorpora
(Structure presented in TEI XML) in our dedicated research data
repository in the LAUDATIO project (http://www.laudatio-repository.org).
In my opinion the main advantages from ES are: Schema-free, Real time
and Data in JSON and the best you can ingest tree like data structure.

Digital Cataloging and Review Internships

The Theodore Roosevelt Center at Dickinson State University is seeking interns
to participate in the cataloging of historical documents in the Theodore
Roosevelt Digital Library. The goal of the Center is to serve scholars,
tourists, teachers, curious citizens, and students of all ages as they explore
the life and achievement of the 26th President of the United States. Launched
to the public in late 2011, the Theodore Roosevelt Digital Library is the
primary portal the Center uses to convey that goal to a national audience.
More than 18,000 items from 12 different collections are already available at
www.theodorerooseveltcenter.org.

The Center has over 150,000 digitized documents from the Theodore Roosevelt
Papers at the Library of Congress, including letters to and from Roosevelt,
newspaper clippings, speeches and executive orders, photographs, maps, and
personal diaries. About 28,000 of these items are in various stages of
cataloging. In order to make the digital files available to the public online,
the Center is seeking interns to help with creation and review of metadata for
these documents in our online database. Interns will work a minimum of 240
hours (approximately six weeks), viewing documents on a computer screen and
typing and reviewing information in a Web-based form. Interns will also
evaluate other catalogers' work to make sure all standards are being met.

Interns may also have the opportunity to participate in copyright review of
collections in order to continue growing the digital library holdings
available to the public. Interns selected for copyright review will receive
additional training to complete this task. Interns will also be encouraged to
ask questions and to volunteer projects depending on their own interests in
digital libraries, Theodore Roosevelt historiography, and cataloging.

Since the work is Web-based, the internships will be conducted remotely.
Interns do not need to relocate to Dickinson, North Dakota, to complete their
work. Training will be provided through an online classroom environment at the
beginning of the internship. A moderate hourly stipend may be available.
Internships are to be completed between May 1 and August 31, 2013, with
preference given to applicants who can complete the internship by June 30,
2013.

Required qualifications:

- Graduate students or recent graduates in history or American studies,
archival studies, library science or information management
- Attention to detail
- Commitment to accurate, high-quality work
- Self-motivated worker, as all work will be done remotely
Desired qualifications:

- Knowledge of Theodore Roosevelt and/or American History in the late 19th and
early 20th centuries
- Experience working in digital collections, particularly creating
metadata/catalog records
- Knowledge of digital standards, particularly Dublin Core and controlled
vocabularies

To Apply:

Send letter of application (including proposed start/end dates and your
reasons for interest in this internship) and resume to Keri Youngstrand,
Digital Library Coordinator/Archivist for the Theodore Roosevelt Center, at
keri.youngstrand(at)dickinsonstate.edu. Applications must be received by April
12, 2013, for consideration.

To these responses, I would also add: extremely easy to install and "configure"
-- that is, NO configuration is required to get it running out-of-the-box
(including schema definitions, servlet containers, etc.) This alone was what
drew me to ES in lieu of Solr way back, though I don't know if it has changed
in Solr 4.

So the main advantages to ES over Solr that I can think of offhand are the fact
that you can store and search on complex JSON documents (that is, documents

and the fact that it will automatically replicate and shard to other instances

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship being offered by CREATe
([www.create.ac.uk](http://www.create.ac.uk)) at the University of Glasgow.
CREATe is the RCUK research centre for copyright and new business models in
the creative economy. With an ambitious programme of 40 projects delivered by
an interdisciplinary team of academics (law, economics, management, computer
science, sociology, psychology, ethnography and critical studies), CREATe is a
pioneering academic initiative designed to help the UK cultural and creative
industries thrive and become innovation leaders within the global digital
economy.

This project will provide the first in-depth study of the role that copyright
plays in shaping the behaviour of the UK's archival institutions, while also
developing policy recommendations to enable those institutions to make their
archival collections available online within a simple, straightforward, and
easily understood copyright regime.

For further details of CREATe's full research programme click here.

**Eligibility**

Home/EU and international applicants are eligible to apply, however only full-
time students are eligible. The work of CREATe is highly interdisciplinary and
therefore applications are welcomed from those with backgrounds in disciplines
including but not limited to law, economics, and cultural policy.

**The Award**

The Scholarship will run for a maximum of three years full-time commencing
September or October 2013 and will provide:

  * an annual bursary equivalent to the RCUK rate - currently £13,590 for
2012/13
  * fees at the standard Home/EU or International rate
  * a research support grant of £750 per annum
**Selection Process**

Applicants will be evaluated by a CREATe selection panel. The selection panel
will base its decision on the applicant's academic qualifications, the quality
of the Research Statement, references, and may take into account any other
factor which it considers relevant. Following a process of shortlisting which
is expected to take place at the end of April, shortlisted candidates will be
invited to attend an interview. In-person interviews are preferred, but where
this is impractical the arrangement of telephone or Skype interviews will be
considered. CREATe reserves the right to make an offer of a scholarship
subject to a research proposal being revised in such manner as it sees fit, or
to any other conditions, or to make no award.

**Further Information**

The closing date for applications is 5pm BST on Saturday 13th April.
