[CODE4LIB] security and privacy in RFPs

2015-03-04 Thread Eric Hellman
I recently wrote a blog post about password security in library subscribed
databases based on an RFP by a state agencecy subject to public disclosure
laws. The results were very revealing, but it covered only a small set of
vendors.
http://go-to-hellman.blogspot.com/2015/02/passwords-are-stored-in-plain-text.html

I would be very interested to learn of RFPs for library automation software,
ebook delivery platforms, etc. subject to similar public disclosure rules that
asked questions relevant to privacy and security in libraries.

Contact me on or off list.

This brand new LITA Webinar shows how Marquette University Libraries
have installed custom tracking code and meta tags on most of their web
interfaces including:

• CONTENTdm
• Digital Commons
• Ebsco EDS
• ILLiad
• LibCal
• LibGuides
• WebPac
• and the general library website.
The data retrieved from these interfaces is gathered into Google’s
• Universal Analytics
• Tag Manager, and
• Webmaster Tools
When used in combination these tools create an in-depth view of user
behavior across all these web properties.

For example Google Tag Manager can grab search terms which can be
related to a specific collection within Universal Analytics and related
to a particular demographic. The current versions of these tools make
systems setup an easy process with little or no programming experience
required. Making sense of the volume of data retrieved, however, is
more difficult.

• How does Google data compare to vendor stats?
• How can the data be normalized using Tag Manager?
• Can this data help your organization make better decisions?

Library Digital Services Manager
St. Edward's University
Austin

**Library Digital Services Manager**

We're looking for a Library Digital Services Manager who is passionate about
building solutions and solving problems. If you have an eye for code quality
and efficiency, a strong work ethic, like to have fun, and you love to work
with cutting-edge technologies and enjoy being challenged on a daily basis, we
want you.

This position has both support and developer responsibilities -- the balance
between them will evolve with the needs of the library. In
this job, you will juggle multiple projects. You will translate high-level
requirements into core functionalities and craft them into clean, well-
documented code. You will rely on your debugging and problem-solving skills,
as you consider and incorporate feedback. You will be asked to think about the
big picture and learn new skills, as the job has the potential to grow with
you.

With an eagerness to learn and serve, we are a creative and energetic team
that values collaboration, attention to detail, and craftsmanship. We work
together to help people learn and gain access to resources, as we build the
academic library of the 21st Century.

**The kinds of things you'll likely do in this position:**
• Work with both vendors and campus IT to support the library's core systems -
ILS and search engine/discovery layer, content management system, other
library-specific applications (reserves, interlibrary loan), as well as an
institutional repository.

• Automate library processes, such as sending and receiving vendor data.

• Collaborate in building and supporting thoughtful integrations with multiple
university systems.

• Work both independently and with the rest of the systems team to execute
both large and small-scale projects, including development, implementation,
and maintenance of websites and applications from a combination of existing
tools and frameworks, in a timely and efficient manner.

**Requirements**
• Bachelor's or Associate's degree in an area related to computer sciences or
information systems or equivalent experience

• Strong SQL knowledge

• Excellent written, verbal, and conversational communication skills

• Ability to learn quickly and solve problems with creative solutions

**Pluses**
• Write HTML, CSS (specifically Sass), and perhaps some JS to assist with the
random front-end task.

• Experience with web development or technology support services in a library
or academic setting supporting an ILS / LSP

• Familiarity with PHP backend development

• Manage version-controlled codebases through git, test them through
continuous integration, and deploy websites to hosts.

• Test and debug issues across multiple browsers and a variety of devices.

• Have experience with dynamic data-driven websites with relevant standards
and technologies such as PHP, XML/XSLT, XHTML, CSS, or JavaScript MVC
frameworks

• Development experience with Drupal, including themes and modules

• Knowledge of other back-end languages/frameworks

• Knowledge of front-end JS and jQuery

**A little bit about us:**
St. Edward's University is a diverse, top-rated liberal arts institution
located in the dynamic, cosmopolitan tech center of Austin, Texas. The Munday
Library is a sixteen-person academic library that supports the university, its
mission, and serves as the intellectual heart of the university.

of Best Regional Universities in the Western Region.

**How to Apply**
Qualified applicants are invited to apply online at
www.stedwards.applicantpro.com Please attach a letter of interest, a resume,
and at least three professional references. Feel free to include links to work
you have done that you would like us to see.

Hello,

My colleagues and I are doing a second call for participation in our study
about digital humanities pedagogy. We are looking specifically for students
who
have taken a digital humanities course at the graduate or undergraduate
level,
either currently or in the past.

If you have taken a DH class and haven't yet participated in our study, we
would love to hear from you. If you teach or have taught a DH class, we
would
sincerely appreciate it if you would pass this survey on to your students.

Our research will investigate DH curriculum through the perspectives of
students and faculty. We will examine how DH is taught and learned in
various
departments at both undergraduate and graduate levels of study. Interviews
with
DH instructors and students will provide a framework for understanding the
nascent DH curriculum. This qualitative data will help open the dialogue
between students and faculty, providing a platform for sharing practical
tips
for improving DH pedagogy and curriculum.

The survey can be found here: http://goo.gl/voephZ

As a token of our appreciation, survey participants will be entered to win
one
of ten $5 Starbucks gift cards.

Please feel free to distribute this message as widely as possible.

[CODE4LIB] Drupal code club

2015-03-04 Thread Brown, Bryan
With the overwhelming response to the recent post about a Python/PyMARC code
club on the Code4Lib list, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in
something similar for Drupal. As a Drupal user and a wannabe module developer,
I'm finding that reading other people's modules (especially core) is one of the
best ways to really understand what's going on under the hood. Much like
Python, Drupal has its own unique idioms and ways of looking at problems, and
reading modules helps one get into this mindset.

If anyone else is interested in this, please let me know either through a reply
to this thread or a direct email (bjbr...@fsu.edu). If there is sufficient
interest, I'll try to set up something similar to what the Python/PyMARC crowd
is doing.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Real time video annotation tools

2015-03-04 Thread Erwin Verbruggen
Hi Greg,

With the EUscreenXL project we made an overview
of annotation tools for video - not sure you can *draw* on them as much as
you like, but at least leave some time-coded comments:

   - Mediathread - for video essays:
   http://mediathread.info/content/about-mediathread
   - Open Video Annotation Project:
   http://openvideoannotation.org/explore.php
   - YouTube does some smart and simple annotation too (see Manage Video)
   - http://videoannotation.codeplex.com/ is a simple tool to add tags and
annotations to video, similar to the YouTube video annotation
   - free application facilitates the embedding, editing and customization
   of Youtube videos: http://www.embedplus.com/
   - ANVIL (http://www.anvil-software.org) is a free software tool
(development stalled) mainly for research purposes (not for republication)
   - Vertov (
   https://www.zotero.org/blog/annotate-video-with-vertov-in-your-zotero/)
allows you to annotate and manipulate video files stored in Zotero
   (development stalled)
   - Some lecture capture systems or services offer annotation tools:
Entwine (Switch), Kaltura, PanOpto mainly for teachers or students
   - http://dotsub.com/
   - Crowdsourced Video Translation: upload and subtitle videos, also
   collaborative translation: http://www.viki.com/
   - Viddler (http://www.viddler.com) is a commercial application to add
   interactivity to video
   - Capable Bits’ Annotate videos is an app (iOS), many others exist in
   both iOS and Android

Happy to learn about / hear from others!

[CODE4LIB] Real time video annotation tools

2015-03-04 Thread Gregory Markus
Hi all,

This might not be the best forum to look for answers but can anyone suggest
some OS real-time video annotation tools?

Basically being able to embedded a video and draw over it, whether or not
the drawings or annotations would be savable or retrievable isn't necessary
but would be a positive.

Any tips or questions appreciated!
