Ahhh that's making more sense! Thanks for tracking that down.

Speaking of tracking, let's hear it for tracking those pesky users across
domains!

2015-09-30 Thread Jason Bengtson
For cross domain tracking I believe you have to set the functions for
appending cookie data to the url yourself, so they should be in your GA
javascript someplace. There's a special method they have to make it easier.
There's more information here:

Re: [CODE4LIB] Alexander Street Press and Google Analytics

2015-09-30 Thread Eric Phetteplace
I know that sometimes URLs have "utm_campaign" etc. and such appended to
record custom campaigns in analytics, but I too wasn't aware that the
analytics code messed with URLs at all. Could you share the analytics
snippet you use? I'd suspect it's some setting in there that causes this.

The one approach that comes to mind is just writing a script to trim links
post-GA. So something that selects all the ASP-looking links and removes
the offending parameters, or perhaps the query string entirely if that's
feasible.

Best,
Eric

I'm intrigued by this cross-browsing thing. Is the additional string of
characters added because the outgoing link becomes something like
http://search.alexanderstreet.com.ezproxy.yourlibrary.edu/ which looks like
the same domain as your library?

Re: [CODE4LIB] Creating account on code4lib.org?

2015-09-30 Thread Wick, Ryan
Hi Sylvain,

On the newer version, clicking the "I am not a Robot" box sometimes gives a
popup box to pick images, and sometimes not. I don't know if any popup or
Javascript blockers interfere with it. Someone else reported a problem with it
today, although several people have new code4lib.org accounts, so it doesn't
appear to be an issue with the plugin or site configuration.

You (and anyone else) can send me what username and email you want to use and I
am happy to create an account manually for you. This email or
ryanw...@gmail.com is fine.

Subject: [CODE4LIB] Creating account on code4lib.org?

Hi all,
Going to http://code4lib.org/user/register to create an account and entering
login + email, then checking the captcha, I get the message:
The answer you entered for the CAPTCHA was not correct.

But I didn't really entered an answer as the form is now using the new
reCaptcha "tick box"
) and I got the green check telling me it should be ok. So maybe the website
is not designed to handle the result from this new captcha (although I am not
sure it changes anything) or is there anything else?

Regards,
Sylvain

[CODE4LIB] Alexander Street Press and Google Analytics

2015-09-30 Thread Laura Krier
Hey folks,
I'm hoping someone else on this list has experienced this and might have
some ideas for me. We use Google Analytics on our website, catalog, and our
discovery system. GA appends a string of characters to the end of URLs when
you leave a site, and while this plays fine with most of our e-resources,
it breaks Alexander Street Press's link resolver system.

Has anyone else noticed this? Any ideas how to resolve this? I'm talking
with the folks at ASP but they have never heard of this.

Please forward to colleagues who may be interested. Apologies for
cross-posting.

What does a trade agreement have to do with libraries and copyright? Expert
Krista Cox who has traveled the world promoting better policies for the
intellectual property chapter of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement
(TPP) will enlighten us at our next CopyTalk webinar.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) is a large regional trade
agreement currently being negotiated between twelve countries: Australia,
Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru,
Singapore, the United States and Vietnam. The agreement has been negotiated
behind closed doors, but due to various leaks of the text it is apparent
that the TPP will include a comprehensive chapter on intellectual property,
including specific provisions governing copyright and enforcement. In
addition to requiring other countries to change their laws, the final
agreement could lock-in controversial provisions of US law and prevent
reform in certain areas.

There is no need to pre-register for this free webinar! Just go to:

Note that the webinar is limited to 100 seats so watch with colleagues if
possible. An archived copy will be available after the webinar.

Krista Cox is Director of Public Policy Initiatives at the Association of
Research Libraries (ARL). In this role, she advocates for the policy
priorities of the Association and executes strategies to implement these
priorities. She monitors legislative trends and participates in ARL’s
outreach to the Executive Branch and the US Congress. Prior to joining ARL,
Krista worked as the staff attorney for Knowledge Ecology International

Since the emergence of easily accessible dynamic online mapping tools,
there has been a drastic increase in geographic interest and awareness.
Whether for personal, social, professional or academic uses, people are
using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to communicate
information in a map format. Whether it’s using Google Earth to study urban
change, or creating Google Map Mashups to deliver library resources, more
and more members of society are turning to mapping programs for their
visualization needs. With so many using GIS technology in their daily
lives, library staff are now more than ever assisting library clients with
their mapping queries.

This course will introduce students to a variety of mapping tools and GIS
technologies such Google Earth and the creation of dynamic KML files;
ArcGIS Online and webmap publishing; Google Fusion Tables and geocoding;
and GIS fundamentals with geospatial data creation. Students will be able
to apply their GIS skills in their reference work, in digitization
projects, in webpages, in library instruction, and more. Through hands-on
exercises, pre-recorded demonstrations and lectures, students will receive
a thorough overview of mapping resources that will enhance and expose their
library’s resources.

Eva Dodsworth is the Geospatial Data Services Librarian at the University
of Waterloo Library where she is responsible for the provision of
leadership and expertise in developing, delivering, and assessing

2015-09-30 Thread jobs
Mellon Fellowship in the Digital Humanities
Harvard University /Villa I Tatti
Florence

This fellowship aims to support the work of scholars in the humanities or
social sciences, librarians, archivists, and data science professionals whose
research interests or practice cut across traditional disciplinary boundaries
and actively employ technology in their work. Projects can address any aspect
of the Italian Renaissance, broadly understood historically to include the
period from the 14th to the 17th century, and geographically to include
transnational dialogues between Italy and other cultures (e.g. Latin American,
Mediterranean, African, Asian etc.). Projects should apply digital
technologies such as mapping, textual analysis, visualization, or the semantic
web to topics in fields such as art and architecture, history, literature,
material culture, music, philosophy, religion, and history of science.

This is a residential fellowship of 4 or 6 months in length that will provide
the time, space, and resources necessary to discover, explore, and build. Up
to two fellowships will be awarded every year.

[CODE4LIB] Creating account on code4lib.org?

2015-09-30 Thread Sylvain Machefert
Hi all,
Going to http://code4lib.org/user/register to create an account and entering
login + email, then checking the captcha, I get the message:
The answer you entered for the CAPTCHA was not correct.

But I didn't really entered an answer as the form is now using the new
reCaptcha "tick box"
) and I got the green check telling me it should be ok. So maybe the website
is not designed to handle the result from this new captcha (although I am not
sure it changes anything) or is there anything else?

Regards,
Sylvain
