Re: [CODE4LIB] Open Library Environment (OLE) Project - Regional Design Workshops

2008-11-14 Thread Anna Headley
Chin up, Jonathan. I am hoping to attend one of these precisely because
I want to talk about how I /wish /my workflow looked, and dream about
tools that would make my life easier - ideas on what this type of core
system *should* incorporate. I can't be the only one.

Certainly, you have to collect evidence about business process needs somehow.

But how many of us have experienced library workflow that actually makes sense, instead of being habits built over years of having to do weird workarounds to work with systems that unreasonably constrained us, built on top of each other layer upon layer, combined in organizations siloed off so the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing, sprinkle on top the natural inclination of most people to be creatures of habit who don't like changing their workflow unless forced---with the result that I'm not even sure we know what makes sense anymore.

The Open Library Environment (OLE, pronounced oh-lay) Project invites

purpose of this workshop is to provide a forum for representatives of
local research libraries and related institutions to discuss our work
surrounding the current Integrated Library System and ideas on what
this type of core system should incorporate. Workshops are being held
in a variety of locations in the US over the next 2 months. For more
information and to find a location near you, go to:

http://oleproject.org/workshops.

That's quite a collection of workshops schedule. I've been interested
in the project since John Little first mentioned it here. On behalf of
the Spring 2008 JA-SIG conference committee I invited him (and he
accepted) to do a birds of a feather session at the conference. There
are some things that I am working on that I think may fit well with the
project (I was also a developer for a piece of Kuali Rice, so I know
some of the Indiana folks) but I can't really tell from the number of
workshops how the will inter-relate. Since there were a few dates where
there are simultaneous workshops in different cities it would seem to me
that some sort of video conference and a real time collaborative system
(we used Macromedia Breeze for the Kuali project with developers at
Cornell and Indiana) would be useful.

With the current economy I know that travel budgets are undergoing a lot
of scrutiny (I've even heard of a very large university system out west
that may be halting all business travel for awhile) attending even one
of the workshops may be problematic.

John,

I hear you about the travel elements of this. That is why this process
will not just be closed off to these workshops. We are hoping to have
enough workshops to gather a wide range of business processes that we
can sift through to find commonalities to model the core business
practices. On top of that, we will model the differences so that
flexibility can be built into the OLE architecture.

There will be plenty of time and opportunities for public comment on the
data gathered at the workshops and the models as they are completed
before the architecture stage is complete. So if you, or anyone, cannot
attend a workshop, there will still be opportunity for comment, and we
want and need it!

Thank you for your interest - and please encourage others who show
interest to participate in any way that they can.

Cheers,
Tim

Re: [CODE4LIB] RDA in RDF, was: Something completely different

2009-04-07 Thread Anna Headley
But the first one to take this on has no one to grab from. The sharing
argument may be a red herring in that the problem, from some
perspectives, isn't so much about sharing one's own work -- it's more
about using others' work. Or is there already a community of people
doing something like what Ross describes? If so, where can I find out
more about who, and how this works?

It seems to me that the best movements forward in this opening of data
are centered on translating marc into more web-usable forms. Which is
great**... for everyone except catalogers with no love for marc. Jakob
makes a good point in the post that Rob pointed out
(http://www.mail-archive.com/code4lib@listserv.nd.edu/msg04422.html)...
when cataloging can look like librarything, the rules *and, I would add,
tools* we use seem incredibly bloated.

** I do mean great. We have to start somewhere. It's just that the
cataloging pieces move so excruciatingly slowly.

Ross Singer wrote:

It's not off-topic, at least I don't think so.

And I don't think anybody is asking to give up on catalogers. Just
like I don't think anybody would want the technologists to describe
the materials, I think the problem is that the catalogers tried to
apply their idea of a data model into tangible technology.

Actually, I think the resource sharing argument is red herring. A
shift to resource-centricity (vs. record-centricity) just means you
when you grab a new 'manifestation' for your local catalog, you may
also have to grab the creator, the publisher, the series, the
expression, the work, the subjects, etc. All of these can be bundled
in the same xml document, though -- really it's just a different way
of looking at the data, but it's not a radical departure in the
delivery/discovery.

on board are trapped by the way sharing currently works, i.e. record
sharing. If the leaders of the cataloging community are failing, what can
catalogers do? This is an honest question, not a throwing-up-of-hands.
Though maybe completely off-topic for this list.

Absolutely. The catalogers are still creating a textual document, not
data. At best you can mark up the text, as we do with the MARC record. I
worry that we won't be able to mesh the cataloger's view with a data view --
that the two are some how inherently opposed. I'd like to start modeling a
new data format but I can't imagine how we can bridge the gap between the
catalogers and the system view. I suppose a very clever interface could hide
the data view from the catalogers, but starting from either AACR2 or RDA and
trying to get there feels extremely difficult. I guess my fear is that it
will require compromises, and those will be hard to negotiate.

[CODE4LIB] update on Wednesday's vegetarian dinner

2010-02-22 Thread Anna Headley
I got a call from the person in charge at Ophelia's, the restaurant we're going
to. He is going to prepare a smaller menu for us to choose from, to help us
all get food more quickly. Otherwise, he said some people would be finished
eating before others got their food. I told him we were not all vegetarians.
He said he would make sure to include choices for more than one vegetarian
option, along with vegan, beef, chicken, and raw.

Also, they were able to accommodate a few extra people over the original max,
so it's possible you were moved up off the waiting list.

Okay, yes, thank you for clarifying! I think the opening line of
Wikipedia's CORS page [1] is a little misleading.

So I can load the js in my page from a different domain, but I can't use

CORS / JSONP would come in. Correct?

The last time I was working around that issue standard practice was for the
js to call a script on your own server, which then went out and grabbed the
data for you.

[CODE4LIB] Lost thread - centrally hosted global navbar

2015-01-09 Thread Anna Headley
Hi all,

Some time ago there was a code4lib thread about hosting some content
centrally (like a global navbar) for use on multiple web sites.

I haven't been able to find it again. Can anyone point me to it?

Thanks!

[CODE4LIB] 2016 post-conference meeting space

Dear code4lib,

If your distributed project would like to piggy-back on the 2016 conference
for a Thursday afternoon or Friday meeting, please get in touch. While we
can't make any guarantees, the local planning committee would like to help
connect you with a friendly (and hopefully free!) meeting facility of

[CODE4LIB] What would you like to learn at a code4lib preconf workshop?

2015-11-03 Thread Anna Headley
Hi all,

This is a thread for brainstorming / inspiring / soliciting one another!

Pre-conference proposals are pulling in real-time from the submission form
to the conference website: http://2016.code4lib.org/proposed-workshops.html

What's still missing? What would you like to learn about for 3 hours in a
code4lib pre-conf workshop? Reply on-list and follow this thread for topics
you know about and could teach others.

Remember workshops don't have to be about code. Workshops on management
topics, cataloging / data topics, and I'm sure many others are relevant to
members of our community. Think about workshops on topics / tools useful
for organizations of every stripe of GLAM and teams of all sizes.

Once you're inspired, here's the link to submit your proposal:

Anna
