Thank you, Eric, for the heads up and your guardianships...

Mailman is easy to administer, but it has a huge caveat: when a user
request a password (reminder, etc.), it sends it as an email in plain text.

Hello! Several of us encountered this article
http://www.theverge.com/2015/9/18/9349425/slack-future-of-conferences-xoxo-festival
and we like the idea that Slack can be used as a communication hub for
the code4lib community. We know Slack is a lot like IRC, and we have
that already. But there seem to be more features in Slack that would
help with the conference, like the easy creation and discovery of
channels. This is an experiment to see if we can expand the community
even more. How? It's is up to you! :-)
Unfortunately, Slack doesn't provide an automated sign up mechanism;
people need to be invited to join it. If you're interested in joining

There's a mailing list specific for Collection Development librarians
although it mostly consists of announcements. The list is moderated.

They're planning to move to a new home under ALA's Association for Library

[CODE4LIB] Fwd: webinar, "Using GeoBlacklight to Implement Your Own Geoportal", Feb. 19, 2014, 3PM EST.

2015-02-16 Thread Ranti Junus
Of possible interest. Forwarded by request. --ranti.

--
MAGIRT is proud to sponsor the

webinar, "Using GeoBlacklight to Implement Your Own Geoportal" on February
19, 2014 at 3 PM EST.

GeoBlacklight http://geoblacklight.org/ is an open-source geospatial
discovery technology which expands the Blacklight search platform into GIS
data holdings. GeoBlacklight is installable in minutes, easily
customizable, and compatible with the Hydra ecosystem (
http://projecthydra.org ). In this webinar, we will (1) demonstrate the
GeoBlacklight technology, (2) define and describe geospatial data holdings,
(3) discuss how you can implement your own Geoportal using GeoBlacklight,
and (4) field questions you may have.

The technology behind GeoBlacklight goes beyond traditional Geoportals to
provide three types of search (text, faceted, and spatial) across a
federated repository of shared geospatial metadata, and a rich data model
designed for preservation and repository management. Stanford started the
development of GeoBlacklight in 2013, and, with MIT and Princeton, released
a beta version in 2014, with a planned 1.0 release in 2015.

Moreover, this effort is an open collaborative project aiming to build off
of the successes of the multi-institutional Blacklight and OpenGeoportal
federated metadata sharing communities (http://opengeoportal.org ).

Registration is $20, or free to MAGIRT members:
http://www.ala.org/Template.cfm?Section=olweb&Template=/Conference/ConferenceList.cfm&ConferenceTypeCode=X

Speakers:

Darren Hardy is a GIS Software Engineer at Stanford University, where he
develops open-source geospatial digital library software and services. His
interdisciplinary research focuses on crowd-sourcing geographic
information, geospatial data discovery and management, and spatial effects
on information behaviors. He earned Ph.D. and Masters degrees in
Environmental Science and Management from the University of California,
Santa Barbara, and B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science from the
University of Colorado at Boulder.

Jack Reed is a Geospatial Web Engineer at Stanford University. He works on
increasing access to geospatial data at Stanford University Libraries. A
contributor to open-source software, Jack is active in the GIS, library,
and open-data communities. He also serves on the executive committee of The

Re: [CODE4LIB] Usability Person?

2013-10-30 Thread Ranti Junus
Our library has a User Experience group. This is not a unit, but consists
of 4 people whose part of work is related to user experience. This group's
main focus primarily on the online experience: website, catalog,
e-resources, and accessibility. We did quite a number of usability tests,
shared the results with the stake holders, and recommended the changes. The
changes that we recommended on our web presence tend to be small. The idea
is not to do big change where it's very noticeable, but make it incremental
so users won't get disoriented. Hence the frequent tests. For the
accessibility part, I hired a blind student to assist me assessing our web
presence and e-resources.

We just hired a dedicated user experience librarian whose work would also
include customer service assessments and user space area.

[CODE4LIB] Code4Lib 2014 Call for Proposals

2013-10-17 Thread Ranti Junus
Code4lib 2014 is a loosely-structured conference that provides people
working at the intersection of libraries/archives/museums and technology
with a chance to share ideas, be inspired, and forge collaborations.

The conference will be held at the *Sheraton Raleigh Hotel in downtown
Raleigh, NC from March 24 - 27, 2014*. For more information about the
hotel, visit http://www.sheratonraleigh.com/

We are currently accepting proposals for prepared talks and
pre-conferences. While only a limited number of these can be selected,
multiple lightning talk and breakout sessions will provide additional
opportunities for you to make your voice heard at the conference.

*Proposals for Prepared Talks:*

Prepared talks are 20 minutes (including setup and questions), and should
focus on one or more of the following areas:

- Projects you've worked on which incorporate innovative implementation of
existing technologies and/or development of new software

- Tools and technologies – How to get the most out of existing tools,
standards and protocols (and ideas on how to make them better)

- Technical issues – Big issues in library technology that should be
addressed or better understood

- Relevant non-technical issues – Concerns of interest to the Code4Lib
community which are not strictly technical in nature, e.g. collaboration,
diversity, organizational challenges, etc.

*To submit a proposal:*

- Go to http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/2014_Prepared_Talk_Proposals

- Log in to the wiki in order to submit a proposal. If you are not already
registered, follow the instructions to do so.

- Provide a title and brief (500 words or fewer) description of your
proposed talk.

- If you so choose, you may also indicate when, if ever, you have presented
at a prior Code4Lib conference. This information is completely optional,
but it may assist us in opening the conference to new presenters.

As in past years, the Code4Lib community will vote on proposals that they
would like to see included in the program. This year, however, only the top
10 proposals will be guaranteed a slot at the conference. Additional
presentations will be selected by the Program Committee in an effort to
ensure diversity in program content. Community votes will, of course, still
weigh heavily in these decisions.

Presenters whose proposals are selected for inclusion in the program will
be guaranteed an opportunity to register for the conference. The standard
conference registration fee will still apply.

Proposals can be submitted through Friday, November 8, 2013, at 5pm PST.
Voting will commence on November 18, 2013 and continue through December 6,
2013. The final line-up of presentations will be announced in early
January, 2014.

*Pre-Conference Proposals:*

Pre-conferences are full- or half-day sessions that will be held on Monday,
March 24th, 2014 and can cover just about any topic you can think of [1].

If you are interested in hosting a pre-conference session, please create a
pitch at http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/2014_preconference_proposals.
Pitches should be added to the wiki by December 6.

Please indicate the topic of your session and your preference for full-day
or half-day. This is expected to be a fluid process, as our venue provides
some flexibility in determining space.

*Pre-Conference Attendance:*

If you are interested in attending a pre-conference, please list your name
underneath the pre-conference description on the wiki; this does not incur
any obligation on your part, but will help planners. You might want to
visit the page occasionally as new session pitches are added. Actual,
less-revocable registration for pre-conferences will be handled as part of
the overall conference registration, and will involve a very small fee.

We look forward to reading your proposals, and seeing you at the conference!

For classic collection development activities, you might want to explore

Re: [CODE4LIB] editing code4lib livestream - preferred format

2013-02-16 Thread Ranti Junus
We only need to create an account on the Internet Archive in order to
upload the videos. According to their FAQ[1] it's best if we uploaded the
highest quality and they will attempt to derive it to various formats that
are easy for streaming or download.

senseless first for self-defense, then report the incident to... to whom?

There's on open question on the github [1] that I haven't seen been
discussed yet. At least, I haven't heard the input from this year's
organizer: "Do we require a duty
officer
explicitly?
Is it fair/reasonable/workable to have conference staff be in that role?"

Re: [CODE4LIB] ulrich's api?

2012-12-27 Thread Ranti Junus
Huh, that's a good question. We happen to subscribe to Ulrich and I don't
know if it's included by default. I didn't even know about this API until
Andrew Nagy mentioned it when I visited their booth at ALA conference to
discuss something else.

In my experience, after I signed the document and sent it back, they sent
me back a link to the documentation page along with the login information.

I have not been using it, regrettably. This is something I put on my goals
and objectives for the coming year.

Hi Jonathan,

The Ulrich XML API is already in place. You just need to contact their
support team through their support form to get the access. They will send
you a Terms of Use document to sign and send back to them (it might involve
a fax machine. ;-) )

Welp, here's the mostly empty wiki page for this project:
http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/Mentorship_Program

Feel free to deconstruct the page as needed.

I supopse those who want to be mentored could help by adding what are their
goals/projected outcomes from this mentorship and what kind of mentor they
are looking for. Or we might not need to be so formal, if people wish so.

[CODE4LIB] Code4Lib MidWest: Parking lot

2012-07-23 Thread Ranti Junus
Hi All,

For those who are driving directly to the MSU Libraries from your
city, we posted a map (PDF) showing the parking lot for visitors [1].
It's basically located next to the MSU Spartan Stadium. This map was
created when our back entrance (called the Red Cedar entrance) was
being renovated, so the map shows a detour to the library. Ignore that
detour mark and just go straight to the Red Cedar entrance after you
cross the bridge.

The parking fee will be covered by us if you park in that lot; we will
give you the parking permit before you leave.

Looking forward to see you all there!

thanks,

Welp, it's about 3 more weeks to go! We still have enough spots for
participants and *plenty* of slots open for the program. Things that
are probably mundane thing to you might actually help others. Matthew

is voted as the best one.*

Or, if you have an idea or topic you want to know or work on but not
sure how to present/work on it, write it down anyway. We might be able
to have a discussion or hackfest on it.

Looking forward to hear from lots of you!

Hello all,

Code4Lib Midwest is coming up next month, and we still have plenty of
slots open for attendees and presenters. C4L Midwest is a low-key but
wildly informative two days of geeking out with both techie and
non-techie library-types over a wide range of creative solutions to
the problems all of us are facing.

If you've been working on solving problems at your library using
technology, whether in code or microchips, consider giving us a little
talk about your progress, your successes, or your failures. It's a
fun, supportive, low-pressure environment with people who will laugh
when you make a joke about Quirks Mode.

Sign up today! Glory and honor can be yours!

A reminder that we still have plenty of spots available. Just add
your information on the Registration section on the wiki [1]. Feel
free to suggest talk, program, hackfest idea, or anything that you
think might be good/useful for code4lib, and add them to the wiki.

New on the wiki: logistics information including places to stay,
transportation options, and nearby eats & drinks. We have blocked off
30 rooms for 7/23 & 7/24 at the East Lansing Marriott. These rooms are
at a discounted rate ($129, king or double), and are held on a
first-come first-served basis. Reservations must be booked by June
23rd or the rooms will be released back to the public.

Breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be provided.

[CODE4LIB] Code4Lib MidWest

Michigan State University (Lansing, MI) is hosting the next Code4Lib

either as 1.5 or 2 days event. So, my question for those who might be
interested to come: would it be better to have it early in the week or

Re: [CODE4LIB] Google Analytics w/ Sub-sub-domains

2012-02-06 Thread Ranti Junus
Andrew,

I looked at the www.library.yale.edu and a bit confused with the links
there. The links go to resources.library.yale.edu, but users will
eventually get the www.library.yale.edu/researchtools or other
sub-directories. So, my question is why there even exists
resources.library.yale.edu if the users would end up in a subdirectory
of www.library.yale.edu? The only thing that I can think of is to
track the click-through by looking at the logs. If that's the case,
why the need to have GA code to track resources.library.yale.edu?

Sorry, not really helping out, but perhaps understanding the reason
behind that resources.library.yale.edu might help figure out how to
proceed. Either way, looks like the Brian Tingle's suggestion should
work.

Also, since most of the link from www.library.yale.edu go to a
different subdomain, I believe the 98% drop off is expected.

For those who don't know. Chris Beer van WGBH created very interesting

Usual words (library, education) are unavoidable. It's interesting to

Once the conference is over, we'll work on adding the links to the

add the link to your own presentation (slides, screencast, code

Hmm... who said stamp of approval has to be only one? Just like those

well. Assuming it's approved by OCLC, of course.

[CODE4LIB] Apps to reduce large file on the fly when it's requested

2011-08-03 Thread Ranti Junus
Dear All,

My colleague came with this query and I hope some of you could give us some
ideas or suggestion:

Our Digital Multimedia Center (DMC) scanning project can produce very large
PDF files. They will have PDFs that are about 25Mb and some may move into
the 100Mb range. If we provide a link to a PDF of that large, a user may not
want to try to download it even though she really needs to see the
information. In the past, DMC has created a lower quality, smaller versions
to the original file to reduce the size. Some thoughts have been tossed
around to reduce the duplication or the work (e.g. no more creating the
lower quality PDF manually.)

They are wondering if there is an application that we could point to the end
user, who might need it due to poor internet access, that if used will
simplify the very large file transfer for the end user. Basically:
- a client software that tells the server to manipulate and reduce the file
on the fly
- a server app that would to the actual manipulation of the file and then
deliver it to the end user.

Personally, I'm not really sure about the client software part. It makes
more sense to me (from the user's perspective) that we provide a "download
the smaller size of this large file" link that would trigger the server-side
apps to manipulate the big file. However, we're all ears for any suggestions
you might have.

thanks,
ranti.

Re: [CODE4LIB] How do you request digital format for a pdf interlibrary loan journal article where a digital format is available for the article?...

2011-05-04 Thread Ranti Junus
It depends on the license agreement between the publisher and the
lending library. Many publishers do not allow library ILL to simply
download the PDF directly from their journal article page and send it
to the requestor. A lot of publishers allow the lending library to
download and print the article, and then send it to the borrowing
library as paper copy. There are also publishers who allow to send
article as print-scan-send. That is, we have to print out the PDF,
scan it (back to the PDF), and send it as a file.

Do ask me why the publisher want that kind of silliness. That's what
I'm told when I complaint about exactly the same thing.

It is my understanding the scan-to-pdf is the problematic one; ILL
unit will need to have OCR-capable scanner and that might add another
burden to them if the OCR result is not good. YMMV.

I'd add that I had problems with the hotel online reservation . . .
fill out enormous form, get a "no rooms available" message, redo

Much easier to call the hotel directly . . . they were very nice.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Voting Now Open for Code4Lib 2011 Prepared Talks

2010-11-17 Thread Ranti Junus
Hello All,

We forgot to include the information that if more than one proposal
that are submitted by the same person are voted as the top
proposals, the presenter will be asked to choose which one s/he would
keep and open the slot to the next highest one. This is to make sure
that everybody would get a fair chance.

You'd need to create an account on the code4lib.org site before you
can vote. So, please go to code4lib.org site and the create account
link is listed on the right side of the front page.

[CODE4LIB] Sub-mailing lists

2010-04-08 Thread Ranti Junus
I have no preference whether the planning discussions for regional
meetings would be conducted on code4lib or code4lib-[regional]. If the
regional group decides to have their own list, I do appreciate the
occasional shout-outs about it on the code4lib.

Moreover, discussions for regionals that are located in a country
where official language is not English, it would probably easier for
those groups to have their own list.

I'm a bit hesitant about removing delicious from the feed because I
think this burst is a temporary only. I like the idea that anything
code4lib will come in "one feed package" (that is, I don't have to go

majority want it removed from the feed, then it's fine by me.

[CODE4LIB] Assigning DOI for local content

2009-11-17 Thread Ranti Junus
Hi All,

I was asked by somebody from a college @ my institution whether they
should go with assigning DOI for their journal articles:
http://llt.msu.edu/

I can see the advantage of this approach and my first thought is more
about whether they have resources in running their purl server, or
whether they would need to do it through crossref (or any other
agency.) Has anybody had any experience about this?

Moreover, are there other factors that one should consider (pros and
cons) about this? Or, looking at the structure of their content,
whether they ever need DOI? Any ideas and/or suggestions?

Any insights about this is much appreciated.

I think Richard Stallman would be interesting. Just make sure somebody
is ready to drag him away when his time is up. He's a, er, very
passionate speaker.

Hello,

I'm trying to do some scheduling for the year 09/10. Do we have the
exact date for code4lib 2010?

thanks,

Re: [CODE4LIB] Another nail in the coffin

2009-05-04 Thread Ranti Junus
I always intrigued with everything that has knowledge management or
information management aspect of it. I'm more intrigued with the
possibility that this tool might be able to work on presenting the
information based on the context.

Scouring the Twine site gave me this:

http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/see_wolfram_alpha_in_action_-_video_and_screenshots.php

I personally think this is a darn cool stuff, from the computing point
of view. I'll wait until it's out sometime this month to see what
kind of results I would get.

Being able to see the screen is more useful, actually. Hopefully they
can do that.

I'm for the logo that are designed professionally like the design
program described above. This doesn't mean that the designer have to
be a professional. They could be amateurs as well. LaunchPad [1] and
SpamAssassin [2] have great examples.

On a side note, I'll go for the temporary tattoos. Also a sticker
that I can put on my laptop. ;-)

Re: [CODE4LIB] planet.code4lib.org -- 3 suggestions

2008-05-21 Thread Ranti Junus
I wonder if the planet can be configured to display only blog posts
that have certain tag(s)? This, of course, would be effective only if
the blog owners agree to help by adding extra tag(s) on their blog
posts. If they agree and the configuration can be done, only relevant
topics would be displayed on the planet.

I also support truncating the posts.

thanks,
ranti.
