Re: [CODE4LIB] archiving a wiki

2012-05-29 Thread Kåre Fiedler Christiansen
A thing to be careful of when web harvesting a wiki, is that it may harvest
mope than you bargained for.

Most wikis (I don't know JSPWiki, sorry) can present earlier versions of pages,
diffs, indexes, and sometimes the same pages under different URLs. This may or
may not be what you want.

For taking a snapshot of the current versions of all pages on a wiki, I have
had luck with using an index page (that is: a list of all pages in the wiki,
not index.html) and harvesting that page with a recursion depth of one. This
may or may not help you :-)

$ wget --html-extension -r -k -l1

Best of luck,
  Kåre

Re: [CODE4LIB] Metadata

2012-02-13 Thread Kåre Fiedler Christiansen
You realize, of course, that discussing the use of the word metametadata could
be described as metametametadata? Which would make my post
metametametametadata. At which point it all turns into silliness (which it
certainly wasn't before... right? :-) ).

[CODE4LIB] Availability of data-enabled temporary SIM cards

2011-12-08 Thread Kåre Fiedler Christiansen
Hi all,

Sorry for being semi-off-topic, but obviously you're the right bunch of people
to know this...

We're a bunch of Danes visiting the Code4Lib conference in Seattle. But the
prospect of a full week being offline on my trusted Android phone is scary. And
the price of international data roaming is simply scary.

So I was wondering if any US carriers are selling data-enabled SIM cards, at a
price that would be reasonable for a week's usage, and which are also available
for visiting tourists?

Any input welcome. Thanks.

Best,
  Kåre

Re: [CODE4LIB] Vote Now: 2012 Conference T-shirt

2011-12-08 Thread Kåre Fiedler Christiansen
Hi,

Could the items in the result list be expansible too? Right now I can't see who
is winning :-)

My ruby-foo is weak (read: non-existent) so no patch supplied. I checked the
code, but it was jst short of being self explanatory enough for me to
attempt a half hearted patch (that I wouldn't know how to test anyway)...

Me too!

Could someone with access to the voting data perhaps anonymously pull out how
many voters have given points to only a single talk or two?

If the problem is indeed real, perhaps simply stating on the page that you are
expected to evaluate _all_ proposals, and not just vote up a single talk, would
help the issue? It might turn away some of the "wrong voters". Requiring to
give out at least, say, 10 points, could be perhaps be a way to enforce some
participation?

[CODE4LIB] SV: [CODE4LIB] Plea for help from Horowhenua Library Trust to Koha Community

2011-11-23 Thread Kåre Fiedler Christiansen
So, a press release from LibLime states the following:

"Another one of the assets acquired in the purchase of LibLime was an
application for the trademark of the term Koha as it applies to ILS software in
New Zealand. That application has now been accepted. PTFS/LibLime will hold
that trademark in trust as well, and will not enforce it in order to insure
that no individual, organization, or company will be prohibited from promoting
their services around Koha in New Zealand.

PTFS/LibLime is prepared to transfer the trademark to a non-profit Koha
Foundation with the provision that the Foundation hold the trademark in trust
and not enforce it against any individual, organization, or company who chooses
to promote services around Koha in New Zealand. PTFS/LibLime encourages a
direct dialog with Koha stakeholders to determine an equitable solution for the
disposition of the trademark that serves the best interests of the libraries
who use Koha."

That sounds promising. Has LibLime seen reason, or am I misinterpreting things?

Best,
  Kåre

Our contacting them isn't as effective as their customers contacting them.

You can get a list of known Koha installations from lib-web-cats:

http://www.librarytechnology.org/map.pl?ILS=Koha

Which lists over 1200 sites ... the Library Journal, when they covered the
purchase of LibLime last year, only mentioned that they had about 1/2 of those
(140 libraries thought PTFS, 500 from LibLime):

http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6714841.html

Although, I don't know if the lib-web-cats is libraries, or whole library
systems.

You could get specific names of LibLime customers by looking through
their website for testimonials scattered on the site, or get their more recent
clients through the press releases in their 'news' feed:

[CODE4LIB] Creating accounts for voting

2011-11-23 Thread Kåre Fiedler Christiansen
Hi list,

I had a bit of trouble registering an account on code4lib.org in order to cast
my votes. I got an email saying my account was pending approval, but approval
seemed to be a bit late in arriving.

I dropped in on IRC to ask for help, and "edsu" was kind enough to help. Thank
you.

If you have similar problems, don't hesitate to drop in on IRC or send an
email, since valid registration sometimes get lost in a barrage of spam
accounts.

HTH. HAND.

Best,
  Kåre
