Re: [CODE4LIB] Would whoever is handling the donations to the code4lib 2016 Diversity Scholarships please get in touch with me?
Hi Bobbi, Have you heard from anyone else yet? I'm not directly connected to the money part, but I can get your issue over to them. Linda On Fri, Nov 20, 2015 at 4:02 PM, Fox, Bobbiwrote: > I may have an issue. > > Thanks, > Bobbi >
Re: [CODE4LIB] Call for Code4Lib 2016 Pre-Conference Proposals
Yes!!! I would love a workshop/session/whatever on "everything you need to learn, software package-wise, to take advantage of Code4Lib hands-on workshops". That would be such a help, as it's so often assumed. --Linda On Wed, Oct 7, 2015 at 2:17 PM, Fox, Bobbiwrote: > Hi, Christina! > > I don't have a workshop to propose, but I *do* have a plea for any > workshop that is a hands-on-the-laptop experience: > > That the presenter of said workshop provide links, in advance, to any > software needed. Re: [CODE4LIB] barbecue bourbon, 2/13
Yes, it is indeed. Half an hour is a good estimate for getting there via public transit from the conference hotel. Also, there are many restaurants near the Newberry, for those of you touring on Thursday. --Linda On Fri, Feb 8, 2013 at 4:12 PM, Doran, Michael D do...@uta.edu wrote: Note to the Thursday afternoon Newberry Library tour attendees: this BBQ restaurant looks to be just 3 blocks north of the Newberry on Dearborn Street. Re: [CODE4LIB] code4lib 2013 location
Thanks to all for the location updates. It is known yet where the registration desk will be on Monday? I signed up as a volunteer to help set up there, so I should probably know where to show up dark and early ;) Linda Ballinger
Re: [CODE4LIB] Newberry Library tour
Code4Lib 2013 attendees, I've arranged a Newberry Library tour for C4L folks at 3:30 on February 14. I'll need to give the tour guide an estimate of how many people might come, so please use the wiki http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/2013_social_activities#Thursday.2C_February_14 to sign up for the tour. Hope to see you there! Linda Ballinger
Re: [CODE4LIB] Newberry Library tour
As a Newberry inmate, I've had it on my mental to-do list to look into the possibility of arranging something for C4L beyond the Thursday canned tour. Now that you've reminded me, I'd be happy to ask for you if you would like me to. I'm not sure what might be possible for seeing things behind the scenes, but I can try once more people chime in. BTW, there will also be an exhibit on display while C4L is here, of French Revolutionary pamphlets http://www.newberry.org/01282013-politics-piety-and-poison-french-pamphlets-1600-1800 Linda Ballinger On Fri, Jan 18, 2013 at 12:05 AM, William Denton w...@pobox.com wrote: I was in Chicago last year and went for a tour of the Newberry Library (www.newberry.org) and really enjoyed it. It's an old independent research library on Washington Square Park and it's beautiful. (If you read THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE [1], it's where Henry works. [2]) They have free tours on Thursdays at 3, but they request advance notice of groups. I'm happy to be in touch with them and try to arrange a Code4Lib group tour, and to wrangle the C4L people who might want to go. If there a just a few, that's no problem; if there are a lot, maybe we can arrange something special. Questions: Are any of you who are going to the conference interested in such a tour? Does that time suit? Would you be interested in going behind the scenes, if possible, and seeing their conservation room and so on? Bill [1] If you haven't read it, then it's a good one to read before visiting Chicago. [CODE4LIB] Code4Lib 2013 alternate housing
(keeping the subject line general, in case other Chicagoans want to jump in) Would free housing make a big difference to you in deciding whether you can come to code4lib 2013? Well, I can offer free crash space to one female attendee. Or, I guess two is possible, if you're willing to share a queen-sized air mattress. Caveats include: my apartment is on the 3rd floor, it's a bit on the under-heated side, and I have a cat who is very generous with her fur. Bonuses include: the air mattress is normal-bed high, there are plenty of blankets, and I'm less than a block from the El (okay, maybe that's a caveat too, I'm used to the sound of trains). Re: [CODE4LIB] A female roommate for Access conference sought
I'm really tempted to go, though I don't know if I'd get funding for it. Which nights will you be there? [CODE4LIB] ALA Midwinter 2012: Karen Coyle to speak at SAC meeting
The ALCTS CaMMS Subject Analysis Committee is pleased to announce that Karen Coyle will be a guest speaker at its Monday, January 23 meeting at 1:30-2:30 in the HYATT, Reunion Ballroom B. KO: Knowledge Organization Searching today, in both Web search engines and library systems, predominantly uses keyword searching techniques. Integrating structured thesauri and classifications with keyword searching is difficult because keyword searching is a mechanical matter of matching strings. What thesauri and classifications have are links, which means that it may be possible to exploit them better in a linked data environment. Coyle will expand on this possibility with some thoughts and some open-ended questions. Re: [CODE4LIB] Cataloging4Coders @ C4L12 - We need your brains
Are you also looking for help from catalogers? I'm uncertain at this point if I'll be able to attend c4l12, but that might just possibly change if I'm helping. Linda --- Linda Ballinger Principal Cataloging Librarian Newberry Library Chicago, IL balling...@newberry.org
Re: [CODE4LIB] What do you wish you had time to learn?
I played double bass in 6th grade. Wish I'd continued. Jay, start with white eggplant. And that's it really. Dang it, Simon. I hate that song and now it's stuck in my head. No hard feelings though. I'll just wander off to listen to some TMBG to replace the earworm. Linda

[CODE4LIB] ALA Midwinter: Linked Data presentation at Subject Analysis Committee
Please excuse the duplication of this message; feel free to distribute to anyone interested. The ALCTS CCS Subject Analysis Committee will meet twice during the ALA Midwinter Conference in San Diego, CA. The committee's first meeting will be on Sunday, January 9, 2011, from 8:00 to 11:00 am at the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter, Santa Rosa Room. The second meeting will take place on Monday, January 10, 2011, from 1:30 to 5:30 pm in the San Diego Convention Center, Room 27B. At the conclusion of the Monday business meeting, there will be a presentation on Linked Data. John Mark Ockerbloom, digital planner and researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, will give a presentation on linked open subject authority data from the Library of Congress (http://id.loc.gov/) and how it can be used to improve subject cataloging and browsing. Mr. Ockerbloom will describe how the LC data is structured (including a brief overview of RDF and SKOS), and explain how he has used it to improve The Online Books Page (http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/) and the Penn Libraries' catalog. He will also show how he augmented and enhanced the authority data from LC, and discuss how widespread use of linked bibliographic and authority data may change how we build and use catalogs in the future. The agenda for the committee's meetings, along with reports submitted to the committee, can be found in ALA Connect: http://connect.ala.org/node/64185 On behalf of the Subject Analysis Committee, Linda Ballinger Principal Cataloging Librarian Newberry Library Chicago, IL balling...@newberry.org
