Re: [CODE4LIB] Adding Twitter to Google Analytics

2013-02-27 Thread Thompson, Keri
Hi Kim,
If I am reading your question correctly, just setting up an advanced/custom
segment in Google Analytics that tracks traffic coming from fb and twitter
should do the trick.

Create an advanced segment, name it and then set it to "include" "source" then
use "Matching RegExp" and fill in the form with:
 facebook|m.facebook.com|hootsuite.com|ow.ly|t.co|tweetdeck|twitter

(or whatever you wantthat's just some of the sources I use...including
ow.ly and hootsuite because we use hootsuite here at SI)

You can then put that custom segment on your dashboard in a widget if you want.
 Or not.

Hth,
Keri

You shouldn't have to do any setup for basic counts to show up. Traffic coming
directly from Twitter or Facebook ought to be appearing under
Traffic Sources -> Social -> Overview

Subject: [CODE4LIB] Adding Twitter to Google Analytics

Hi Everyone,

I am running a wordpress-powered web site and use Google Analytics to measure
our traffic. I would like to set up Analytics so that it measures traffic
coming from Twitter and Facebook. I see that Google Analytics can be set up to
track social interactions, but I'm feeling overwhelmed by the instructions on
how to set it up
(https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/gajs/gaTrackingSocial?hl=en_GB).

Have any of you successfully set this up? Care to share your tips?

It would be wonderful if there was a simple edit to the WP code, or a plugin -
am I dreaming?

Many thanks,
Kim

in person, in the National Museum of Natural History, in Washington, D.C. or
remotely.
Applications will be accepted until **October 15th, 2012**.

Details are below or at
http://library.si.edu/internships/taxonomic-literature-2-linked-data-mining-paid-internship.

Dates preferred: Winter term (January-February) 2013
Full time or Part time: Either full time for three weeks or part time, totally
105 hours. This is a paid internship, carrying a stipend of $500 per week (full
time) or a total of $1500.
Intern Supervisor: Joel Richard
Location of internship: Remote or Local (Washington, DC)
Desired knowledge/skill sets:
One of:  B.S. in Computer Science or related field OR MLS/MLIS  current student
or recent graduate (within 6 months)
Must have: Experience with databases or large datasets, knowledge of at least
one programming language e.g., Ruby, Python, Perl, etc.
Desirable: experience or education in the Natural Sciences

Brief description of project:
TL-2 is the premier publication of the International Association for Plant
Taxonomy (IAPT); a 15 volume guide to the literature of systematic botany
published between 1753 and 1940.  It is organized by author and includes
numbered entries for the author's publications. Suggested abbreviations for use
in taxonomic publications are provided: abbreviations for the author's name,
short titles and abbreviations of the short titles for publications. TL-2 is
the standard by which authors' names and titles should be abbreviated.
TL-2 is now being offered online as a searchable database at
http://www.sil.si.edu/digitalcollections/tl-2/. The plan is to provide TL-2 as
linked open data (LOD) to increase utility for the Botany community.
Possible activities to explore in this internship include one or more of:
. Data mining for additional Linked Open Data elements using Google Refine,
e.g., geographic names, species names, institutions.
. Linking data elements to other Linked Open Data sources on the web, e.g.,
VIAF, FreeBase, DBpedia.
. Exploring use of visualizations to provide additional insights to the data
End results of the internship will be at least two of:
. A informational graphic  interpreting some of the data (existing data or new
data elements created via data mining).
. Identification of elements for linking, with links out to other Linked Open
Data source(s).
. A report of an analysis of the data with suggestions for future work,
challenges faced in mining or linking data, etc.
If the internship is remote, frequent check-ins via Skype or GTalk (or phone)
will be the primary means of communication. The internship can be full-time or
part-time (20 hrs/week or more) with total time spent on the project not to
exceed 105 hours.

not be accepted.

[CODE4LIB] Code4lib National Capitol Area VA/MD/DC

2012-09-10 Thread Thompson, Keri
---all others may ignore this message---
Meeting
THIS THURSDAY the 13th
4:30pm
Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History

I forgot to send out a reminder last week, but that doesn't mean we're not
meeting.
I mean it doesn't not mean that we're not not meeting.
Or to put it another way, we're still meeting.
If you come, that is. If you don't come, it will be pretty boring. And sad.
So sad that unicorns will cry rainbow tears into a lake of sparkle-y despair.[1]

I can try to set up a video conference if you so desire such a thing (please
email me to that effect) but I've had mixed results with our new system so will
try but no guarantees.

Also: what do you want to talk about? I want to talk about Linked Data projects
and maybe OCLC and schema.org or maybe Joel can talk about making Drupal
modules and how much he loves serials but if you can think of something
more fun than that PLEASE add it to the wiki. PLEASE. Do it for the unicorns.

[CODE4LIB] Reminder: Code4lib Regional MD/DC/VA - National Capitol Area meeting JUNE 27th

2012-06-19 Thread Thompson, Keri
Apologies if my original subject line confused anyone. The code4lib regional
group that is in the general vicinity of Washington, DC is meeting *next week*!
If you haven’t already, please email, call, or @ me if you are thinking about
attending.

If you have never come to a local DC Code4lib meetup NOW IS THE TIME! THIS IS
THE ONE YOU WANT TO ATTEND!
But don’t come because I shouted at you in all caps, come because we sincerely
want you to be here, and there will be much geeking out, and fun, and tasty
beverages afterwards, AND because we’re meeting at the Smithsonian which is
pretty darn cool (if I do say so myself.) The room we’re meeting in has had the
main corridor blocked, so getting to the meeting will require traversing secret
passages and mysterious doors and whatnot. It will be just like Night at the
Museum, except without Ben Stiller, and nothing comes to life, and it’s not
nighttime.

What: code4lib MD/DC/VA
Who: code4lib fans in the DC/MD/VA Greater Washington, DC/National Capitol area
When: Wednesday, June 27th 4:30-5:30p meet, 5:30p-? Tasty beverages
Where: Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of Natural History, 10th and
Constitution Ave. NW, Washington DC

Details and agenda on the wiki http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/MDC

Also, if you have anything to add to the agenda, PLEASE for the love of Pete DO
SO.

Can we squeeze in a meeting between ALA and wikimania? Let's find out.

Please RSVP to me if you plan to attend so I can get a sense thatthere will
actually be a meeting. And so I know how much to bake. Also, I probably have
to get guest badges for people so I need to know your name.

Re: [CODE4LIB] A to Z lists

2011-02-16 Thread Thompson, Keri
We have a home grown system built on CF/MSSQL. It currently manages our
electronic serials licensing workflow (or part of it at least) as well as
generating the A-Z list. One peculiarity of the list, and one reason why we're
still using it, is that staff wanted to be able to include "select" free/open
access serials in a list while *not* adding them to the catalog.
I hope to replace it with something more automated in the near future.

We user Xerxes too to serve up our databases A-Z list but as we have so many
databases (900 or so.) that it takes a really long time for the page to
load, as the way Xerxes is currently designed, it loads the whole A-Z list at
once. So if you have a large number of databases, be warned that providing them
through Xerxes may result in your users waiting awhile...
