[CODE4LIB] NASIG February webinar - Troubleshooting Electronic Resources with ILL Data

2016-02-08 Thread publicist
Greetings!

NASIG's Continuing Education Committee is hosting a one-hour
webinar "Troubleshooting Electronic Resources with ILL Data"
on February 18, 2016 at 1pm (EST).

Troubleshooting electronic resource linking issues can seem
to be an insurmountable task - so many resources, so little
time. Using ILL data on cancelled requests for materials
available online, the electronic resources staff at the
Samford University Library detected problems with the
implementation of their new link resolver as well as
metadata communication issues between databases and their
link resolver knowledgebase. The establishment of a workflow
for communicating cancelled ILL transaction data on an
ongoing basis has also improved the communication between
electronic resources staff and the ILL department thus
improving overall linking and customer services for our
users. This presentation will demonstrate how a single
cancelled ILL transaction can lead to the discovery and
solution of systemic linking problems.

Speaker:
Beth Ashmore
Metadata Librarian for Serials & Electronic Resources
Samford University

Beth Ashmore is Metadata Librarian for Serials and
Electronic Resources at Samford University Library. She
received her MS in Library and Information Science from the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is co-author
of the book The Librarian’s Guide to Negotiation.

Registration deadline: February 17, 2016

Webinar Rates:
NASIG members: $35
NASIG non-member: $50
Group registration: $95

[CODE4LIB] How to get more out of your 2015 NASIG Conference experience!

2015-03-20 Thread publicist
This year, the NASIG Conference Workshops will be held on
Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, after the general
sessions have ended. We have several experts in their fields
providing hands-on learning opportunities that will enhance
your conference experience.

For new serials catalogers or experienced catalogers looking
to refresh their understanding of RDA authority, we have a
two-day workshop led by Les Hawkins and Hien Nguyen of the
Library of Congress. The workshop will provide an overview
of the basic principles underlying authority control in the
context of serials cataloging and the MARC 21 authority
format. http://sched.co/27oF

Back by popular demand, Clair Dygert (Assistant Director for
Licensing and E-Resources, Florida Virtual Campus) will be
giving the license negotiation workshop on Saturday
afternoon. A continuation from last year’s preconference,
the workshop will focus on best practices for creating
agreements that protect the rights of users and libraries,
as well as developing negotiating skills and strategies and
the confidence to employ them. http://sched.co/27oE

If you have burning questions about copyright, or you’ve
been tasked with more of a role in vetting copyright
questions at your institution, Lisa Macklin (Director,
Scholarly Communications Office, Emory University) will be
leading a workshop Saturday afternoon that will answer those
questions and get you set up to help colleagues at home
understand copyright better. The workshop will include small
groups working through scenarios often encountered by
librarians. http://sched.co/27oA

Libraries have been collecting usage data for a long time,
even before we were managing digital collections. What do we
do with this data? What should we not do with this data?
Jennifer Leffler (Technical Services Manager, University of
Northern Colorado) will provide hands-on exercises and best
practices on Sunday morning for collecting and analysing use
statistics, specifically those adhering to the COUNTER
standard. http://sched.co/27oH

It’s not too late to register for these excellent
workshops! You can add them on to your existing registration

[CODE4LIB] NASIG and SSP Announce Joint Meeting on Information Policies May 27, 2015

2015-02-19 Thread publicist
For Immediate Release-

NASIG and SSP Announce Joint Meeting on Information Policies
May 27, 2015

NASIG and SSP (Society for Scholarly Publishing) are pleased
to announce a joint full-day program, “Evolving
Information Policies Their Implications: A Conversation
for Librarians Publishers.” It will be held on May
27th, 2015, at the Crystal Gateway Marriott, Arlington,
Virginia (DC) on the first day of each organization’s
annual conference.

Attendees will learn about public policy issues ranging from
open access, grant funder submission and publication
requirements, management and preservation of data sets, to
access for the print disabled, intellectual property,
copyright law and fair use. Speakers will address the
current status and speculate about potential developments,
all with a view to helping attendees gain a better
understanding of current information policy and its impact
on our current and future roles.

We have recruited three expert speakers to address these
topics from the perspectives of the publishing, librarian
and vendor communities that make up the core of our
respective memberships. Jayne Marks, Vice President of
Publishing, Wolters Kluwer will represent the publishing
perspective. T. Scott Plutchak, formerly Director of the
Lister Hill Library of Health Sciences at the University of
Alabama at Birmingham and now Director, Digital Data
Curation Strategy at the same institution, will address the
librarian viewpoint. Caitlin Tresande, Head of Research
Policy, Digital Science and Senior Strategy Editor for
Nature will provide the vendor perspective.

In addition, two speakers who are intellectual property and
copyright experts will share their knowledge and opinions.
The entire day will have ample opportunities for audience
questions and will conclude with a wrap up panel with all
five speakers sharing their predictions and responding to
questions.

“When then president-elect Bob Boissy, Springer, suggested
a joint program three years ago, we thought immediately of
teaming up with SSP as another organization devoted to
dialogue, communication and education that takes no position
on public policy matters. We were excited to find a
conference location adjacent to SSP’s to make the concept
work,” noted Steve Kelley, Wake Forest University, NASIG
President.

Howard Ratner, CHORUS, SSP President agreed: “This unique
collaborative session between NASIG and SSP offers an
exceptional opportunity for our members to not only attend a
thought-provoking program, but to network with NASIG
members. More organizations should offer such joint
programming. ”

Registration for the event will open on the websites of both
organizations in March. NASIG offers no competing
programming, but SSP will also offer preconference seminars
on the same day.

[CODE4LIB] Call for Proposals - NASIG 30th Annual Conference

2014-09-30 Thread publicist
NASIG 30th Annual Conference
NASIG at 30: Building the Digital Future
May 27-30, 2015
Washington, D.C.

The 2015 Program Planning Committee (PPC) invites proposals
for conference sessions. Publishers, vendors, librarians,
and others in the fields of electronic resources and serials
are encouraged to submit proposals relating to scholarly
communication, publishing, resource acquisition, management,
and discovery. Proposals based on emerging trends, case
studies, and descriptive and experimental research findings
are encouraged.

This is the 30th year of the NASIG conference, and we are
particularly interested in proposals that look at historic
trend analysis of the serials industry over the past 30
years, as well as visions of the future of the industry
based on our history.

As we have in recent years, the PPC specifically welcomes
programs focusing on the Core Competencies that the NASIG
Core Competency Task Force developed for Electronic
Resources Librarians. Please refer to the Core Competencies,
http://bit.ly/1ovwjkk.

Program topics from the Core Competencies:
• Electronic resource life cycle and management
• Collection analysis and development
• Standards and systems of cataloging and classification,
metadata, and indexing
• Technology and providing access to electronic resources
• Licensing and legal framework
• Standards, initiatives, and best practices
• Scholarly communication

Please use the online form,
http://proposalspace.com/calls/d/392, to submit a proposal
or program or idea. This Call for Proposals will close on
November 15, 2014.

Please note the following:

• The PPC welcomes proposals that are still in the
formative stages, and may work with potential presenters to
focus their proposals further.
• Proposals should name any particular products or
services that are integral to the content of the
presentation. However, as a matter of NASIG policy, programs
should not be used as a venue to promote or attack any
product, service, or institution.
• Time management issues generally limit each session to
one to three speakers for conference sessions. Panels of
four (4) or more speakers are discouraged must be discussed
in advance with the Program Planning Committee
(prog-p...@nasig.org)
• Please refer to the NASIG reimbursement policy,
http://bit.ly/YIeyYA, for reimbursement of speaker expenses.
• All session speakers must complete a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) prior to speaking at the conference.

Inquiries may be sent to PPC at: prog-p...@nasig.org

We look forward to a great conference in Arlington!

[CODE4LIB] From Record-Bound to Boundless: FRBR, Linked Data, and New Possibilities for Serials Cataloging - October webinar

2014-09-25 Thread publicist
Registration is now open for: From Record-Bound to
Boundless: FRBR, Linked Data, and New Possibilities for
Serials Cataloging

Date: Thursday, October 23, 2014
Time: 2:00 pm (EDT)
Length: 1 hour

Webinar Rates:

NASIG members: $35
Non-NASIG members: $50
Group registration: $95
Registration deadline: Wednesday, October 22, 2014

Registration:
http://www.nasig.org/site_event_detail.cfm?pk_association_event=9312

Description:
The use of linked data within the library community has the
potential to significantly impact cataloging and may help
improve information discovery and retrieval for the end
user. For librarians and users alike, serial publications
have been a constant challenge due to their complex
publication histories and fluid nature. In this webinar, the
presenters will reprise their NASIG 2013 Conference
presentation, providing an overview of Linked Data
developments within the library and journal publishing
communities. By exploring serials in relation to FRBR
principles and linked data modeling techniques, the
presenters will describe how a search for periodical
literature might be improved in a linked data environment.
Taking description out of the current record constraints,
serials librarians will be able to express the relationships
between multiple versions of the same publication, and
document how a particular journal has changed over time. The
linked data model also opens up many opportunities for the
provision of value-added content to bibliographic
descriptions.

Speakers: Marlene van Ballegooie, University of Toronto
Libraries Juliya Borie, University of Toronto Libraries

data is an important skill for librarians to master as they
attempt to analyze their collections and justify their
expenses to administrations.

This webinar, jointly presented by NISO and NASIG, will
highlight the ins and outs of COUNTER, as well as discuss
the process of analyzing the data once harvested.

TOPICS AND SPEAKERS
- COUNTER Update: Release 4 of the COUNTER Code of Practice
for e-Resources – Peter Shepherd, Project Director,
COUNTER
- Integrating COUNTER Statistics within the Information
Workflow – Oliver Pesch, Chief Product Strategist and
Senior Vice President, EBSCO Information Services
- Usage in the Eye of the Beholder: Developing Academic
Library Usage Reports that Meet the Needs of Your
Institution – Jill Emery, Collection Development
Librarian, Portland State University Library

emerging areas of interest and concern, especially with
regards to new formats or acquisition models that require
new language that has not yet been standardized. I will also
share updates about popular standard model licenses.

Librarian
Texas State University

Liane has been negotiating licenses within libraries since
2005. She has served as the Continuing Resources Librarian
at Texas State University since 2009 and also currently
serves as the Interim Head of Acquisitions. During her
tenure, she has negotiated several major system-wide
licenses with major publishers, created an institutional
license template, and begun work on new, standardized
language not currently found in model licenses. She has
developed a website that enables librarians to compare
clauses in model licenses.

[CODE4LIB] Rogers, Skinner, and Van de Sompel to be Featured Vision Speakers at NASIG 29th Annual Conference

2013-11-08 Thread publicist
The NASIG Program Planning Committee is pleased to announce
the Vision Speakers for the 29th Annual NASIG Conference!
The Vision Speakers are:

Jenica Rogers
Jenica Rogers is the Director of Libraries for the State
University of New York at Potsdam. She is best known for her
public decision not to renew her university’s annual
subscription to the American Chemical Society’s (ACS)
online journals package because of the ever-increasing
subscription costs. Her current professional interests
include interrogating the ways our information economy is
breaking down and reforming now that the internet changed
everything, figuring out what the role of a library is in a
reality in which warehousing books is sort of passé, and
informing, mentoring, and supporting new library
professionals as they hit the real world face first and at
full speed.

Katherine Skinner
Dr. Katherine Skinner is the Executive Director of the
Educopia Institute, a not-for-profit educational
organization that hosts inter-institutional, collaborative
programs for the production, dissemination, and preservation
of digital scholarship. She is the founding program director
for the MetaArchive Cooperative, a community-owned and
community-governed digital preservation network founded in
2004 that now has more than 50 member institutions in four
countries. She also serves as the host of the Library
Publishing Coalition project, in which 47 university
libraries currently are designing and implementing a
collaborative that addresses and supports an evolving,
distributed, and diverse range of library publishing and
production practices.

Herbert Van de Sompel
Herbert Van de Sompel is the team leader of the Prototyping
Team at the Research Library of the Los Alamos National
Laboratory. The Team does research regarding various aspects
of scholarly communication in the digital age, including
information infrastructure, interoperability, digital
preservation and indicators for the assessment of the
quality of units of scholarly communication. Herbert has
played a major role in creating the Open Archives Initiative
Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH), the Open
Archives Initiative Object Reuse Exchange specifications
(OAI-ORE), the OpenURL Framework for Context-Sensitive
Services, the SFX linking server, the bX scholarly
recommender service, and info URI. Currently, he works with
his team on the Open Annotation, Memento (time travel for
the Web), and ResourceSync projects.

[CODE4LIB] NASIG Continuing Education webinar

2013-08-27 Thread publicist
The North American Serials Interest Group is pleased to
invite you to register for Scholar Commons @USF: Sharing
Knowledge Worldwide.

Date: Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013
Time: 2pm (EDT)

Register now: http://www.nasig.org/resources_webinar.cfm

Description:
Librarians and faculty members are now working together
through open access publishing to make faculty-produced
scholarly content available to researchers worldwide. The
University of South Florida Tampa Library has been working
with bepress’ Digital Commons platform to create a
substantial institutional repository that includes open
access journals, conference proceedings, and data sets,
among other materials. Library staff members are currently
involved in a variety of activities, including negotiating
memorandum of understandings, loading backfiles, registering
DOIs with CrossRef, designing layout, doing final
publication steps, and assisting with technical issues. In
2011, accompanied by major outreach and marketing efforts by
the USF Tampa Library’s administration, the institutional
repository, Scholar Commons @ USF, went live. The new
repository allows the library to pull fragmented collections
previously hosted on other platforms into a single system
with improved discoverability. As part of this effort, the
library has forayed into open access journal publishing, and
this session will provide an overview of current workflows.
Additionally, speakers will explain how the repository was
established, what is involved, lessons learned, and plans
for future directions.

Speakers:

Carol Ann Borchert, University of South Florida
Julie Fielding, University of South Florida

Speaker Bios:

Carol Ann Borchert has been the Coordinator for Serials at
the University of South Florida (USF) since 2004.
Previously, she was in the Reference and Government
Documents departments at USF, and in several areas of the
James B. Duke Library at Furman University. She holds an MLS
from the University of Kentucky and an M.A. in Spanish from
USF.

Julie Fielding has been a Library Operations Coordinator at
the University of South Florida (USF) since August 2011,
working with electronic resources and open access journals.
Before this, she was an Information Services Associate at
Gale Cengage Learning. She holds an MLIS from Wayne State
University in Detroit, Michigan.

[CODE4LIB] Core Competencies of Electronic Resources Librarianship Adopted as NASIG Policy

2013-07-30 Thread publicist
The NASIG Board approved and adopted “Core Competencies of
Electronic Resources Librarianship” as NASIG policy at
their June 2013 meeting in Buffalo, New York.

Sarah Sutton, former chair of the Core Competencies Task
Force (CCTF), notes that she and the CCTF have high hopes
that both library and information professionals and LIS
educators will find the document a valuable resource upon
which to base their work. Sarah writes, “I am so gratified
that many practitioners have already used the draft
document, which circulated in the professional community
over the past few months. It has sparked much interest and
use, as evidenced by the wonderful sessions at the recent
NASIG Annual Conference. I think the document supports
NASIG’s Vision to promote dialogue and professional
growth, to provide learning opportunities, to advocate for
its constituents, to challenge assumptions and traditions,
and to take a leadership role in the information
environment.”

“Core Competencies of Electronic Resources
Librarianship” is available on the NASIG website,

See below for additional pre-conference information:

Copyright in Practice: A Participatory Workshop
Thursday, June 6, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm

Kevin Smith, Scholarly Communications Officer, Duke
University

Copyright presentations often focus on “the rules”
without sufficient attention to practical decision-making.
Yet because application of the law so often depends on
specific facts and circumstances, this approach can leave a
big gap for actual library practice. This workshop will
focus on situations and how to make specific decisions;
discussion of the rules and principles of copyright law
will, it is hoped, emerge from those applications. Although
common situations will be discussed in order to provide a
comprehensive look at copyright decision making,
participants are encourage to bring real-life problems for
the group to consider and discuss.

Library as Publisher
Wednesday, June 5, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Timothy S. Deliyannides, Director, Office of Scholarly
Communication and Publishing
and Head, Information Technology, University of Pittsburgh

Academic libraries are increasingly investing in new efforts
to support their research and teaching faculty in the
activities they care about most. Learn why becoming a
publisher can help meet the most fundamental needs of your
research community and at the same time can help transform
today’s inflationary cost model for serials. We will
explore not only why to become a publisher but exactly how
to achieve it, step by step, including careful selection of
publishing partners, choosing the right platform for
manuscript submission and editorial workflow management,
one-time processes to launch a new journal, conducting peer
reviews, maintaining academic quality, and measuring impact.
We’ll also cover the broader range of publishing
activities where libraries can have an impact, including
open access monographs, general institutional repositories
and subject-based author self-archiving repositories. We
will close with a review of tools, services, and communities
of support to nurture the new library publishing venture.

RDA Serials: Transitioning to RDA within a MARC 21
Framework – full day
Wednesday, June 5, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm (Session 1)
Thursday, June 6, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm (Session 2)

Les Hawkins, Coordinator of the CONSER program at the
Library of Congress
Hien Nguyen, CONSER Specialist at the Library of Congress
Valerie Bross, ERM/Continuing Resources Cataloging, Section
team leader at UCLA

The workshop will provide basic instructions for RDA serials
cataloging
based on the most up to date PCC and CONSER RDA decisions
and
practices. The presenters will incorporate in-class,
hands-on exercises to
engage participants in active learning. Prior to the
workshop, attendees
will be expected to complete prerequisite self study
training modules on
FRBR Fundamental Concepts and the RDA Toolkit. Also prior
to the workshop
attendees may participate in an online follow-up session on
the
prerequisite materials to complement the in-class training
component.

This workshop is aimed at experienced AACR2 catalogers
making the
transition to RDA.

Spotlight on Vision Speakers
NASIG has pulled together an outstanding lineup of vision
speakers who will share their expertise as we explore the
Art of Information and the Architecture of Knowledge!

Bryan Alexander, Senior Fellow, National Inst. for
Technology in Liberal Education
NASIG Presentation: “Libraries and Mobile Technologies in
the Age of the Visible College”

Attend this session for insights on how the mobile
revolution has and will transform libraries, to review
recent changes—e-book renaissance, media ecosystems,
nearly-always-on user access, “place as library” instead
of ‘library as place”-- and to consider the future based
on an analysis of current trends.

Publication Topics: Emerging pedagogical forms enabled by
mobile technologies, learning processes and outcomes
associated with immersive environments (as in gaming and
augmented reality) and their applications. Recent
publication is “Should Liberal Arts Campuses Do Digital
Humanities?” in Debates in the Digital Humanities
(University of Minnesota Press, 2012).

Quote: “Imagine a student heading to college in 2022. How
will her campus experience differ from ours? What changes
has digital technology made?... To imagine those futures, we
need to identify what shapes them. What are the most
powerful forces currently driving change in higher
education?
“Imagining the Future of Higher Education,” EDUCAUSE
Quarterly, December 15, 2011.

Megan Oakleaf—Associate Professor, iSchool at Syracuse
University
NASIG Presentation: “The Value of Serials in Academic and
Special Libraries”
Attend this session on the challenge of defining,
demonstrating, communicating the impact of serials.

Publication Topics: Outcomes assessment, evidence-based
decision making, information literacy instruction,
information services, and digital librarianship. Recent
publication “Building the Assessment Librarian Guildhall:
Criteria and Skills for Quality Assessment Librarian”
appears in the first 2013 issue of the Journal of Academic
Librarianship.

Quote: “Academic library value and impact exist on an
individual level. In other works, the difference that
academic libraries make in the lives of users typically
happens one user at a time.” “Building the Assessment
Librarian Guildhall: Criteria and Skills for Quality
Assessment Librarian” Journal of Academic Librarianship,
39 (2013).

Siva Vaidhyanathan, Professor of Media Studies Law at
University of Virginia
NASIG Presentation: “Googlization and the Challenge of Big
Data”
Attend this session on questions about privacy and
intellectual policy of Big Data and why Big Data research
should include projects that examine the cultural,
intellectual, and societal implications.

Publication Topics: Critical information studies, politics
of information, intellectual property rights, cultural,
political and economic impact of information technology.
Recent book is The Googlization of Everything -- and Why We
Should Worry , published in 2011 by University of California
Press

Quote: “This endeavor, which I call the Human Knowledge
Project, would identify a series of policy challenges,
infrastructure needs, philosophical insights and
technological challenges with a single realizable goal in
mind: to organize the world’s information and make it
universally accessible. I am sure Google won’t mind if we

Framework (Session 1)

Les Hawkins, Coordinator of the CONSER program at the
Library of Congress
Hien Nguyen, CONSER Specialist at the Library of Congress
Valerie Bross, ERM/Continuing Resources Cataloging, Section
team leader at UCLA

Over the past two years, CONSER has been develop
documentation, discussing best practices, and creating RDA
bridge training. This workshop provides a basic overview of
RDA instructions for serials and is aimed at experienced
AACR2 catalogers making the transition to RDA. The session

Library as Publisher

Copyright in Practice: A Participatory Workshop

Kevin Smith, Scholarly Communications Officer, Duke
University

Copyright presentations often focus on “the rules”
without sufficient attention to practical decision-making.
Yet because application of the law so often depends on
specific facts and circumstances, this approach can leave a
big gap for actual library practice. This workshop will
focus on situations and how to make specific decisions;
discussion of the rules and principles of copyright law
will, it is hoped, emerge from those applications. Although
common situations will be discussed in order to provide a
comprehensive look at copyright decision making,
participants are encourage to bring real-life problems for
the group to consider and discuss.

RDA Serials: Transitioning to RDA within a MARC 21
Framework (Session 2)

Les Hawkins, Coordinator of the CONSER program at the
Library of Congress
Hien Nguyen, CONSER Specialist at the Library of Congress
Valerie Bross, ERM/Continuing Resources Cataloging, Section
team leader at UCLA

Over the past two years, CONSER has been develop
