[CODE4LIB] NASIG February webinar - Troubleshooting Electronic Resources with ILL Data
Greetings! NASIG's Continuing Education Committee is hosting a one-hour webinar "Troubleshooting Electronic Resources with ILL Data" on February 18, 2016 at 1pm (EST). Troubleshooting electronic resource linking issues can seem to be an insurmountable task - so many resources, so little time. Using ILL data on cancelled requests for materials available online, the electronic resources staff at the Samford University Library detected problems with the implementation of their new link resolver as well as metadata communication issues between databases and their link resolver knowledgebase. The establishment of a workflow for communicating cancelled ILL transaction data on an ongoing basis has also improved the communication between electronic resources staff and the ILL department thus improving overall linking and customer services for our users. This presentation will demonstrate how a single cancelled ILL transaction can lead to the discovery and solution of systemic linking problems. Speaker: Beth Ashmore Metadata Librarian for Serials & Electronic Resources Samford University Beth Ashmore is Metadata Librarian for Serials and Electronic Resources at Samford University Library. She received her MS in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is co-author of the book The Librarians Guide to Negotiation. [CODE4LIB] How to get more out of your 2015 NASIG Conference experience!
This year, the NASIG Conference Workshops will be held on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, after the general sessions have ended. We have several experts in their fields providing hands-on learning opportunities that will enhance your conference experience. For new serials catalogers or experienced catalogers looking to refresh their understanding of RDA authority, we have a two-day workshop led by Les Hawkins and Hien Nguyen of the Library of Congress. The workshop will provide an overview of the basic principles underlying authority control in the context of serials cataloging and the MARC 21 authority format. http://sched.co/27oF Back by popular demand, Clair Dygert (Assistant Director for Licensing and E-Resources, Florida Virtual Campus) will be giving the license negotiation workshop on Saturday afternoon. A continuation from last years preconference, the workshop will focus on best practices for creating agreements that protect the rights of users and libraries, as well as developing negotiating skills and strategies and the confidence to employ them. http://sched.co/27oE If you have burning questions about copyright, or youve been tasked with more of a role in vetting copyright questions at your institution, Lisa Macklin (Director, Scholarly Communications Office, Emory University) will be leading a workshop Saturday afternoon that will answer those questions and get you set up to help colleagues at home understand copyright better. The workshop will include small groups working through scenarios often encountered by librarians. http://sched.co/27oA Libraries have been collecting usage data for a long time, even before we were managing digital collections. What do we do with this data? What should we not do with this data? Jennifer Leffler (Technical Services Manager, University of Northern Colorado) will provide hands-on exercises and best practices on Sunday morning for collecting and analysing use statistics, specifically those adhering to the COUNTER standard. http://sched.co/27oH Its not too late to register for these excellent workshops! [CODE4LIB] NASIG and SSP Announce Joint Meeting on Information Policies May 27, 2015
For Immediate Release- NASIG and SSP Announce Joint Meeting on Information Policies May 27, 2015 NASIG and SSP (Society for Scholarly Publishing) are pleased to announce a joint full-day program, Evolving Information Policies Their Implications: A Conversation for Librarians Publishers. It will be held on May 27th, 2015, at the Crystal Gateway Marriott, Arlington, Virginia (DC) on the first day of each organizations annual conference. Attendees will learn about public policy issues ranging from open access, grant funder submission and publication requirements, management and preservation of data sets, to access for the print disabled, intellectual property, copyright law and fair use. Speakers will address the current status and speculate about potential developments, all with a view to helping attendees gain a better understanding of current information policy and its impact on our current and future roles. We have recruited three expert speakers to address these topics from the perspectives of the publishing, librarian and vendor communities that make up the core of our respective memberships. Jayne Marks, Vice President of Publishing, Wolters Kluwer will represent the publishing perspective. T. Scott Plutchak, formerly Director of the Lister Hill Library of Health Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and now Director, Digital Data Curation Strategy at the same institution, will address the librarian viewpoint. Caitlin Tresande, Head of Research Policy, Digital Science and Senior Strategy Editor for Nature will provide the vendor perspective. In addition, two speakers who are intellectual property and copyright experts will share their knowledge and opinions. The entire day will have ample opportunities for audience questions and will conclude with a wrap up panel with all five speakers sharing their predictions and responding to questions. When then president-elect Bob Boissy, Springer, suggested a joint program three years ago, we thought immediately of teaming up with SSP as another organization devoted to dialogue, communication and education that takes no position on public policy matters. We were excited to find a conference location adjacent to SSPs to make the concept work, noted Steve Kelley, Wake Forest University, NASIG President. Howard Ratner, CHORUS, SSP President agreed: This unique collaborative session between NASIG and SSP offers an exceptional opportunity for our members to not only attend a thought-provoking program, but to network with NASIG members. More organizations should offer such joint programming. Registration for the event will open on the websites of both organizations in March. NASIG offers no competing programming, but SSP will also offer preconference seminars on the same day. About NASIG: NASIG supports a dynamic community of professionals including, but not limited to, librarians, publishers, and vendors engaging in understanding one anothers perspectives and improving functionality throughout the information resources lifecycle with an emphasis on scholarly communications, serials, and electronic resources. www.nasig.org About SSP: The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP), founded in 1978, is a nonprofit organization formed to promote and advance communication among all sectors of the scholarly publication community through networking, information dissemination, and facilitation of new developments in the field. - See more at: http://www.sspnet.org For more information, please contact: NASIG: i...@nasig.org SSP: i...@sspnet.org ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Charlene N. [CODE4LIB] From Record-Bound to Boundless: FRBR, Linked Data, and New Possibilities for Serials Cataloging - October webinar
Registration is now open for: From Record-Bound to Boundless: FRBR, Linked Data, and New Possibilities for Serials Cataloging Date: Thursday, October 23, 2014 Time: 2:00 pm (EDT) Length: 1 hour Webinar Rates: NASIG members: $35 Non-NASIG members: $50 Group registration: $95 Registration deadline: Wednesday, October 22, 2014 Registration: http://www.nasig.org/site_event_detail.cfm?pk_association_event=9312 Description: The use of linked data within the library community has the potential to significantly impact cataloging and may help improve information discovery and retrieval for the end user. For librarians and users alike, serial publications have been a constant challenge due to their complex publication histories and fluid nature. In this webinar, the presenters will reprise their NASIG 2013 Conference presentation, providing an overview of Linked Data developments within the library and journal publishing communities. By exploring serials in relation to FRBR principles and linked data modeling techniques, the presenters will describe how a search for periodical literature might be improved in a linked data environment. Taking description out of the current record constraints, serials librarians will be able to express the relationships between multiple versions of the same publication, and document how a particular journal has changed over time. The linked data model also opens up many opportunities for the provision of value-added content to bibliographic descriptions. Date: Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013 Time: 2pm (EDT) Register now: http://www.nasig.org/resources_webinar.cfm Description: Librarians and faculty members are now working together through open access publishing to make faculty-produced scholarly content available to researchers worldwide. The University of South Florida Tampa Library has been working with bepress Digital Commons platform to create a substantial institutional repository that includes open access journals, conference proceedings, and data sets, among other materials. Library staff members are currently involved in a variety of activities, including negotiating memorandum of understandings, loading backfiles, registering DOIs with CrossRef, designing layout, doing final publication steps, and assisting with technical issues. The new repository allows the library to pull fragmented collections previously hosted on other platforms into a single system with improved discoverability. As part of this effort, the library has forayed into open access journal publishing, and this session will provide an overview of current workflows. Additionally, speakers will explain how the repository was established, what is involved, lessons learned, and plans for future directions. Speakers: Carol Ann Borchert, University of South Florida Julie Fielding, University of South Florida Speaker Bios: Carol Ann Borchert has been the Coordinator for Serials at the University of South Florida (USF) since 2004. [CODE4LIB] Core Competencies of Electronic Resources Librarianship Adopted as NASIG Policy
The NASIG Board approved and adopted Core Competencies of Electronic Resources Librarianship as NASIG policy at their June 2013 meeting in Buffalo, New York. Sarah Sutton, former chair of the Core Competencies Task Force (CCTF), notes that she and the CCTF have high hopes that both library and information professionals and LIS educators will find the document a valuable resource upon which to base their work. Sarah writes, I am so gratified that many practitioners have already used the draft document, which circulated in the professional community over the past few months. It has sparked much interest and use, as evidenced by the wonderful sessions at the recent NASIG Annual Conference. I think the document supports NASIGs Vision to promote dialogue and professional growth, to provide learning opportunities, to advocate for its constituents, to challenge assumptions and traditions, and to take a leadership role in the information environment. NASIG 2013 Pre-Conferences http://nasig2013.sched.org/ The 2013 NASIG Annual Conference is offering 3 exciting pre-conferences with expert speakers. Kevin Smith, keynote presenter at the 2012 NASIG Annual Conference, will discuss the rules and principles of copyright law, focus on library specific situations, and help attendees learn how to make informed copyright decisions at their library. Come learn from Timothy S. Deliyannides and Lauren Collister about how a library can become their own publisher supporting their institutions research and teaching faculty while transforming todays inflationary cost model for serials. Need hands-on exercises in creating serials RDA records and making the transition to RDA? Les Hawkins, Hein Nguyen, and Valerie Bross will conduct a full day workshop split between two days. See below for additional pre-conference information: Copyright in Practice: A Participatory Workshop Thursday, June 6, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm Kevin Smith, Scholarly Communications Officer, Duke University Copyright presentations often focus on the rules without sufficient attention to practical decision-making. Yet because application of the law so often depends on specific facts and circumstances, this approach can leave a big gap for actual library practice. This workshop will focus on situations and how to make specific decisions; discussion of the rules and principles of copyright law will, it is hoped, emerge from those applications. Although common situations will be discussed in order to provide a comprehensive look at copyright decision making, participants are encourage to bring real-life problems for the group to consider and discuss. Library as Publisher Wednesday, June 5, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm Timothy S. Deliyannides, Director, Office of Scholarly Communication and Publishing and Head, Information Technology, University of Pittsburgh Academic libraries are increasingly investing in new efforts to support their research and teaching faculty in the activities they care about most. Learn why becoming a publisher can help meet the most fundamental needs of your research community and at the same time can help transform todays inflationary cost model for serials. We will explore not only why to become a publisher but exactly how to achieve it, step by step, including careful selection of publishing partners, choosing the right platform for manuscript submission and editorial workflow management, one-time processes to launch a new journal, conducting peer reviews, maintaining academic quality, and measuring impact. Well also cover the broader range of publishing activities where libraries can have an impact, including open access monographs, general institutional repositories and subject-based author self-archiving repositories. We will close with a review of tools, services, and communities of support to nurture the new library publishing venture. RDA Serials: Transitioning to RDA within a MARC 21 Framework full day Wednesday, June 5, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm (Session 1) Thursday, June 6, 8:00 am 12:00 pm (Session 2) Les Hawkins, Coordinator of the CONSER program at the Library of Congress Hien Nguyen, CONSER Specialist at the Library of Congress Valerie Bross, ERM/Continuing Resources Cataloging, Section team leader at UCLA The workshop will provide basic instructions for RDA serials cataloging based on the most up to date PCC and CONSER RDA decisions and practices. The presenters will incorporate in-class, hands-on exercises to engage participants in active learning. Prior to the workshop, attendees will be expected to complete prerequisite self study training modules on FRBR Fundamental Concepts and the RDA Toolkit. Also prior to the workshop attendees may participate in an online follow-up session on the prerequisite materials to complement the in-class training component. This workshop is aimed at experienced AACR2 catalogers making the transition to RDA.
