Re: [CODE4LIB] Craft Brew Drinkup at Code4lib 2011
Hi Mark, You might also consider including homebrew in the luggage :) With budgets and all, I won't be able to attend. However, I'm sure I'm not the only Systems Librarian who homebrews. Do you guys have any tips on transporting your brews? I've seen a bottle of tequila that exploded in a friend's suitcase on the way back from Mexico and I'd rather not smell like beer all week. -Josh Mark A. Re: [CODE4LIB] Craft Brew Drinkup at Code4lib 2011
Wow, I'd hate to do a border crossing with exploded bottles. I've driven from PA to FL with cases in picnic coolers. Freeze some ice packs. I use the flexible plastic types. Cool brew -- then include several ice packs in the center of the cooler. -- I have never tried, but could work... Fill empties 1/2 way with water, leave uncapped (allow for expansion of H2O), freeze. Once frozen -- use your capping tool to cap the bottles, include in the mix. Be sure to label frozen water as such -- avoid confusion :) James Gilbert, BS, MLIS Systems Librarian Whitehall Township Public Library 3700 Mechanicsville Road Whitehall, PA 18052 610-432-4330 ext: 203 -Original Message- From: Code for Libraries [mailto:CODE4LIB@LISTSERV.ND.EDU] On Behalf Of Joshua Gomez Sent: Monday, January 24, 2011 12:11 PM To: CODE4LIB@LISTSERV.ND.EDU Subject: Re: [CODE4LIB] Craft Brew Drinkup at Code4lib 2011 Do you guys have any tips on transporting your brews? When I ported four 750mL bottles of Dogfish to Chicago via Amtrak, I wrapped the bottles in plastic bags to contain any possible explosions and then used a combination of bubble wrap and various items of winter outerwear to protect the bottles. Worked like a charm. Authentic Mexican tequila does explode, though. It's a feature. -Mike

Since we're on the topic, I highly recommend visiting the Bloomington Brewing Company. Their pale ale is excellent from what I remember as an IU SLIS student. Another option are these beer diapers: http://goo.gl/AMCPx. I've used them on several trips and they work like a charm. I'm bringing several, so will likely have a couple left over for folks who find a Bloomington beer that they want to take back. I am driving, so I can take any extra beer home with me! However, for airplanes, the plastic zip-lock bags and put in the middle of the suitcase wrapped with clothing has worked for me in the past, but I never had one break, so I am not sure what would happen if I did. The diapers do sound like a good idea though.
