Digital Preservation Bootcamp

Training in concepts, issues, tools, strategies & approaches for Digital
Preservation and Archiving. This half day block of training sessions will focus

broadly in the field. This day of “Digital Preservation 101” is open to
practitioners of all levels, but will be targeted specifically for those
looking to gain exposure to the field.

Topics: Preservation metadata, principles of designing preservation system
architecture, characterization & validation of particular file formats (PDF,
AV, etc.), preservation planning, preservation policies, preservation
organizations, Trusted Digital Repository (TDR) certification, how do you
plan/structure a digital preservation implementation project.

Open Preservation Foundation Workshop:
veraPDF: definitive, open source PDF/A validation for digital preservationists
veraPDF’s goal is to build the definitive validator for PDF/A. This workshop
will begin with an introduction to why PDF/A is used and the importance of
validation. We will have a web demonstrator with user interface that
participants can try out. We will then be look at metadata extraction, focusing
on what the data means and why it is important in a library or archive
environment.

The second part of the workshop will focus on how the software has been put
together to produce a reliable web services that can be used in your
institution.
