Re: [CODE4LIB] Open Source Course reserves management

2008-03-11 Thread Kyle Fenton

I'd like to explain my "late to the game" posting on this -- I could
have sworn that I'd been subscribed to this listserv for some time
now, but apparently not. Ergo I didn't know about the numerous
replies you'd already received, Jeffrey. I was forwarded your email
by someone else today.

Looks like I have some listserv archives to dig through now!

Jeffrey,

You may want to check out ReservesDirect (http://
www.reservesdirect.org/ ). While the 2.x versions do not have
sophisticated copyright related features, Emory is working on version
3.0 (now in a pre-alpha release) that is moving more in the direction
you're talking about. If you have any questions, feel free to write
Jason White ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), who is programming version 3.0, or
Amanda French ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) who is the project manager.

Is anyone aware of a standalone or add-on open source package for
managing electronic and/or digital course reserves? A commercial
offering in this area is "Aries", but it is not customizable to our
needs. Most useful features are monitoring for multiple use of same
article or chapter and efficient copyright clearance.

NC State Univ. Libraries is also beginning work on implementing
ReservesDirect. I think we hope for a trial with a few courses this
summer, and implementation for fall.

We (Michigan State University Libraries) looked into the possibility
of implementing this a few years ago, but the final decision was to
utilize the university's course management system instead.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Open Source Course reserves management

2008-03-06 Thread Simon Huggard

Hi all. We're in the middle of a process of assessing e-reserve software
and are likely to make a decision within a few months.

Of the open sources systems out there, the Emory one is definitely the
best. Most of the proprietary systems are quite well developed but they
vary enormously in architecture and have differences in terms of
copyright tracking/management and what type of back-end system they
have. Some are merely content management-type systems, and others are
much more tuned to e-reserve/list type requesting and management.

I don't have a comprehensive document which outlines the features of
each but we will be developing one shortly (which I can share at some
point if you email me).

Systems we've looked at are:

ReservesDirect from Emory
http://reservesdirect.org
(open source)

ARES from Atlas Systems
http://www.atlas-sys.com/products/areas/

Dokutek's ERES system
http://docutek.com/products/eres/

Resource List Management System (RLMS) from HarvestRoad
http://www.harvestroad.com/
(which uses the HIVE eprint repository database underneath)

Loughborough Online Reading List System (LORLS)
http://bookworm.lboro.ac.uk
(open source)

Aberystwyth (Univ of Wales) Readings Management System (ARMS)
http://arms.mis.aber.ac.uk
(in-house developed - with possibility of being used by others)

TalisList from Talis Corporation
http://www.talis.com/list/

DISCOVER (formerly from Sentient Learning) from LearnBuild
http://www.learnbuild.co.uk/Discover.html

Cheers,

Simon

 Here's one Reserves direct.

We have been considering Atlas's Ares™
because of the copyright clearance but the price is not in our budget.

It would be good to hear if anyone has any experience with either platform.
Thanks.
