with this patch applied new CF created via cqlsh are using new 
org.apache.cassandra.db.marshal.IntType type for int columns. Old applications 
using CF created with old int type are unaffected. In python returned type to 
old apps is int or long depending on value inserted. Patch is fully backward 
compatible, i havent discovered any incompatibility yet.

in CQL we should have types:
int (new IntType), Long (LongType) and number/varint (IntegerType). Better to 
do changes early while CQL is not widely used.

IntType is needed:
*  for type safety to applications loading data from cassandra to int type 
variable to make sure that input does not overflow. Unlike other nosql 
databases cassandra can have optional type safety and int4 type is currently 
missing.

* to resolve compatibility issues with applications writing fixed size 4 bytes 
integers to IntegerType. (most hector apps are doing this). These integers can 
not be manipulated using cassandra-cli or read back in applications in python 
or PHP.

 Cassandra currently lacks support for 4byte fixed size integer data type. 
 Java API Hector and C libcassandra likes to serialize integers as 4 bytes in 
 network order. Problem is that you cant use cassandra-cli to manipulate 
 stored rows. Compatibility with other applications using api following 
 cassandra integer encoding standard is problematic too.
 Because adding new datatype/validator is fairly simple I recommend to add 
 int4 data type. Compatibility with hector is important because it is most 
 used Java cassandra api and lot of applications are using it.

I have over 4GB memory free. Nodetool requires max 32MB memory to run and it 
shoud be limited to that value, no matter of default limits.

It is true that drivers should do the right thing insofar as they will continue 
to see LongType schema and deserialize the 8 byte values to whatever makes 
sense. However, an expectation is still being broken, and it's hard to imagine 
all of the cases where this will blow up someones face.

Imagine someone that uses a schema written as CQL to setup new nodes.  
Depending on the version it is applied to, they're going to get entirely 
different and incompatible schemas.

my cluster is upgraidng from cassandra0.7.5 to 0.8.4,I deleted all the servers 
and data  and install new Cassandra0.8.4 in the cluster, but this time the

I don't understand the claim that we need this for Hector compatibility, 
though.  My understanding is that our varint would be just fine with 32bit ints 
-- since the length is part of the byte[] encoding, we don't have to do clever 
things like hadoop's vint does

I'm the author of the Hadoopy http://bwhite.github.com/hadoopy/ python library 
and I'm interested in taking another stab at streaming support. Hadoopy and 
Dumbo both use the TypedBytes format that is in CDH for communication with the 
streaming jar. A simple way to get this to work is modify the streaming code 
(make hadoop-cassandra-streaming.jar) so that it uses the same TypedBytes 
communication with streaming programs, but the actual job IO is using the 
Cassandra IO. The user would have the exact same streaming interface, but the 
user would specify the keyspace, etc using environmental variables.

The benefits of this are
1. Easy implementation: Take the cloudera-patched version of streaming and 
change the IO, add environmental variable reading.
2. Only Client side: As the streaming jar is included in the job, no server 
side changes are required.
3. Simple maintenance: If the Hadoop Cassandra interface changes, then this 
would require the same simple fixup as any other Hadoop job.
4. The TypedBytes format supports all of the necessary Cassandara types

5. Compatible with existing streaming libraries: Hadoopy and dumbo would only 
need to know the path of this new streaming jar
6. No need for avro

The negatives of this are

2. I'd have to check but this solution should work on a stock hadoop (cluster 
side) but it requires TypedBytes (client side) which can be included in the jar.

 My reading (a while ago) of the code indicates that there is no logic 
 involved during bootstrapping that avoids consistency level violations. If I 
 recall correctly it just grabs neighbors that are currently up.
 There are at least two issues I have with this behavior:
 * If I have a cluster where I have applications relying on QUORUM with RF=3, 
 and bootstrapping complete based on only one node, I have just violated the 
 supposedly guaranteed consistency semantics of the cluster.
 * Nodes can flap up and down at any time, so even if a human takes care to 
 look at which nodes are up and things about it carefully before 
 bootstrapping, there's no guarantee.
 A complication is that not only does it depend on use-case where this is an 
 issue (if all you ever do you do at CL.ONE, it's fine); even in a cluster 
 which is otherwise used for QUORUM operations you may wish to accept 
 less-than-quorum nodes during bootstrap in various emergency situations.
 A potential easy fix is to have bootstrap take an argument which is the 
 number of hosts to bootstrap from, or to assume QUORUM if none is given.
 (A related concern is bootstrapping across data centers. You may *want* to 
 bootstrap to a local node and then do a repair to avoid sending loads of data 
 across DC:s while still achieving consistency. Or even if you don't care 
 about the consistency issues, I don't think there is currently a way to 
 bootstrap from local nodes only.)

exactly columns x, y, and z.  The farther we get from that the more conceptual 
debt we incur.

Because what you're doing is actually turning multiple cassandra columns, into 
a single row.  I think the component syntax does a better job of describing

I think we should go with the component syntax for now (since it can handle 
both sparse and dense) and consider adding the destructuring syntax for dense 
encodings later.

fwiw - it might be simpler but not sure that you necessarily need CDH's 
streaming jar.  Could HADOOP-1722 be backported to 0.20.203 by itself?  That 
would allow it to be seamlessly integrated into Brisk as well.

hadoopy and dumbo.
