so, 2 of 3 tests look ok on the CI run above, but whole_map_conditional_test 
had 1/100 failure. can't repro locally, so going to try another bulk run at 500 
iterations to see if it happens again.

does look like a consistency issues:

in all three tests we're reading back at a low consistency which may not always 
be the inserted/updated data.
