I'll give it some time to see if someone volunteers to help (I'm afraid of
lawyer stuff), but in the mean time here's a teaser of what we'll be missing
out on without elephants...

(Also, conveniently, the request in another issue to remove or change the red
Java icon actually resolved the branding guideline question I had above.)

Well just checked the 5.4.1 distribution. It comes with the "old" icons in the
/media folder and according to the license, as far as I can tell they are under
Apache 2.0 License.

As of the new ones, I'm not sure.

Matthias Bläsing commented on NETBEANS-2417:

I stated it already in the associated PR: The branding guidelines are of
secondary concern. The branding assets on the page can't be used, as no license
is attached to them. No license means, that we can't use the logos (copyright).
Acceptable licenses are listed in the Apache legal faq:
[https://apache.org/legal/resolved.html] (Category A preferred, Category B ok).
Everything else will be painful in the long run.

For npm a similar discussion was done - the "official logo" was not provided
under a usable license, so the logo was retrieved from a secondary source, that
licensed the artwork as CC-0 and was updated to match our expectations. The
trademark question (may we use a potential trademark), was positively answered
by apache legal. That is the icon represents the "referenced" product in
situations where the name would not be appropriate (representing file types).

Long story short: To use the "official" gradle logo, it needs to be provided
under an acceptable license. The licenseinfo.xml needs to be updated to reflect
that license.

[jira] [Created] (NETBEANS-2614) Improve icon scaling on HiDPI displays, and prepare ImageUtilities for HiDPI icons.

2019-05-29 Thread Eirik Bakke (JIRA)
Eirik Bakke created NETBEANS-2614:
-

Summary: Improve icon scaling on HiDPI displays, and prepare
ImageUtilities for HiDPI icons.
 Key: NETBEANS-2614
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-2614
 Project: NetBeans
  Issue Type: Improvement
  Components: platform - Other
Affects Versions: 11.0
 Environment: Windows, Linux, and MacOS.
Reporter: Eirik Bakke

To look good on HiDPI/Retina displays, the NetBeans IDE, and NetBeans Platform
(RCP) applications, will eventually need to provide high-resolution versions of
various image asset (typically icons). In the shorter term, there are also a
few tricks that can be applied to make the existing low-resolution icons render
better on HiDPI monitors, such as setting
RenderingHints.VALUE_INTERPOLATION_BICUBIC before painting each icon.

Throughout the NetBeans codebase, two different APIs are used interchangeably
to represent icon: javax.swing.Icon and java.awt.Image. The NetBeans
ImageUtilities class provides methods for loading either, and for converting
instances of one to instances the other.

Having now implementing scalable window system icons (NETBEANS-1238,
NETBEANS-1260), prototype SVG icon loading (NETBEANS-2604), and a HiDPI-enabled
splash screen ( https://github.com/apache/netbeans/pull/1246 ), the following
design seems the most feasible:

# Scalable icon implementations (such as VectorIcon or a future SVGIcon) should
be implemented as custom implementations of the javax.swing.Icon interface.
# The various methods in ImageUtilities should be updated to preserve custom
Icon instances even as an Icon is converted to an Image and back (i.e. make
image2Icon(icon2image(icon)) reversible).
# Other parts of the codebase should be updated as necessary to use
ImageUtilities.image2Icon(image) instead of "new ImageIcon(image)", and to use
"Icon.paintIcon" instead of "Graphics.drawImage". (Most of the IDE code already
does the right thing.)

This issue tracks the required changes to ImageUtilities, as well as the
previously mentioned icon rendering improvements, which will serve as a visual
demonstration that the right painting code is being invoked.

I already did this (locally) with the new Gradle logo as referred to in the
linked issue NETBEANS-2417.

Should I submit a PR with just the plain logos, no "coffee"? I agree with the
point in the issue about the color clashing. The new Gradle logo is meant for
light and dark backgrounds, and it looks great. It's blue so it'll address this
issue.

[jira] [Created] (NETBEANS-2611) MySQL connection doesn't use just one database and autocomplete doesn't work

2019-05-29 Thread Joshua Bakker (JIRA)
Joshua Bakker created NETBEANS-2611:
---

Summary: MySQL connection doesn't use just one database and
autocomplete doesn't work
 Key: NETBEANS-2611
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-2611
 Project: NetBeans
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: db - MySQL
Affects Versions: 11.0
 Environment: Windows 8.1, MySQL 5.5, Netbeans 11.0
Reporter: Joshua Bakker
 Attachments: bug_autocomplete.png, connection_properties.png

I'm developing in PHP in Netbeans (which works fine). Since I'm using MySQL I
tried making a database connection to my database locally, in order to
"autocomplete" queries.

The problem is, I created my database connection (database URL is
jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/CMS?zeroDateTimeBehavior=convertToNull) and CMS is
obviously the database.

However, when the connection is created I can see all my databases, and when I
try to autocomplete in a query, all I'm seeing is _headers _(_alias to
UNKNOWN__)

Steps I took:
 # Went over to the Services tab
 # Right mouseclick on Databases -> New connection
 # Select MySQL (Connector/J driver)
 # Database: CMS (after clicking Next
 # Select schema: (can't select anything, after clicking Next)
 # Click Next

I didn't have problems with it in Netbeans 10 IIRC. I've attached a screenshot
of how my autocomplete looks like and the properties of my connection. In case
I need to provide something else or clear something up I'll be willing to.
