There’s no need to import Maven-based projects. Just open the folder containing

What are the precise steps to reproduce the problem, please?

Yes, if you have a pom.xml file, you have a Maven project, and NetBeans uses
the pom.xml file only for project configuration.

Try and leave one comment, also try to use one question mark per comment.

1. Select a file in NetBeans.

2. Right-click the file.

3. Choose Properties.

4. Look at the "Extension" field.

5. The "Extension" field has a value.

6. Change the value.

7. Press Enter.

Is there a build.xml file in your project's root folder? Then it is an
Ant-based project. Is there a pom.xml file? Then it is a Maven based project.

Ideally, put your code on GitHub (github.com), describe here or there how to
reproduce the problem, and put a link to that GitHub repo here.

Is it an Ant based project? Is it Maven based? Gradle? Is it a web app or a
Java desktop app?

No one can help if yoy provide nothing at all other than words.

If you don’t provide a sequence of steps to reproduce the problem, or a project
with which to do so, no one will ever be able to help you.

No, writing back with some other story, no matter how long it is, is not going
to help. Just provide a way for someone to reproduce this. Please.

The problem may not be in your installation directory, but in your user
directory, check the permissions there (look in the About dialog in NetBeans to

But for two of your colleagues there's no problem, so there's something
different between how Big Sur is installed for you compared to those two
colleagues.

It may therefore not be a problem with Big Sur, but with how it is installed in
your case. The trick is to find out what's the difference between yours and
theirs.

So, what's the problem with just continuing to use "sudo", if it works for you?

And, since it is a permissions related issue, can you look at the permissions

Instead of using "sudo", you can explicitly point to the JDK to use via
"netbeans_jdkhome" in etc/netbeans.conf in your installation directory.
(Probably the two where "sudo" is not needed have the above option explicitly
set already.)

Instead of using "sudo", you can explicitly point to the JDK to use via
"netbeans_jdkhome" in etc/netbeans.conf in your installation directory.

You said that the problem with GitHub remains.

So, take a look at your Git-related dirs. Search for “git”.

For NetBeans, there’s a user direcrory and an installation directory. The
installation of Big Sur might have messed up both of them. Or one. Or neither.

This is my last message in this discussion. You’re able to start NetBeans via
“sudo”, so you can do your work, you need to figure out how Big Sur messed up
your permissions if you want to avoid using “sudo”, but that is not something I
can help you with further.

Done my best, this is the end of this discussion for me.

Getting NetBeans to work following macOS Big Sur installation
Hi,
Installing macOS Big Sur for the first time somehow lost the “which jdk to use”
setting that was I think set at installation time.
This was fixed by editing:
/Applications/NetBeans/Apache NetBeans
12.1.app/Contents/Resources/NetBeans/netbeans/etc/netbeans.conf
and setting:
netbeans_jdkhome="/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk-15.jdk/Contents/Home"
Hope this helps as we all move to Big Sur !

NetBeans is, in that context, simply a GUI on top of GitHub. If GitHub does not
work in NetBeans, it will not work on the command line either.

Probably if you use “sudo” on the command line with GitHub, it will work.
Therefore it is again a question of permissions being messed up when you
installed Big Sur.

On the command line, using "sudo", can you start up NetBeans successfully?

If so, the problem is that when you upgraded your Mac OS X system, the upgrade
messed up your permissions.

Make sure there is no # in front of netbeans_jdkhome.

Make sure it points to the right location of the JDK.

If you can only run NetBeans with “sudo”, make sure you have permissions on the

If you can only run NetBeans when using “sudo”, that means you have a
permissions problem somewhere. No fix in NetBeans can help you then.

Go to the “bin” folder. Start NetBeans?

No bin folder? You didn’t download the binary ZIP file. Go back to the Download

So, you did not download the ZIP file. Go back to the Download page and read

What do you see in the About box when NetBeans is started up, can you also
paste that here? Also, please remove the user directory again, reproduce the
problem again, and then attach the log files here from the user directory.

Note in the users mailing list (see netbeans.apache.org for how to join)
there’s some discussion on this, however most there seem to be able to start
and use NetBeans without a problem on the latest Mac OS X release, so another
way forward is to join the mailing list and discuss further there.

Indeed, NetBeans does not bundle a JRE. You need to do this yourself or inside
the .conf file in your application's 'etc' folder, you should be able to point
to the JRE you want to use.

Just be aware that NetBeans 8 is ancient. We're currently on Apache NetBeans
12, get it at netbeans.apache.org.

> I have a Wicket java webapplication Ant project created in Netbeans 7.x. In
> the past the project has moved to Netbeans 8.2 and 9.0. I use currently the
> OpenJDK11. I can still build, run and debug the project in Netbeans 9. But in
> Netbeans 10 and later (11.3), the project won't run in Tomcat 9. I have
> searched for the cause and found out that the class files are changed or
> deleted on the first attempt to run or debug after a *clean and build*. All
> the innerclasses and anonymous classes (*$*.class) files in the projects
> *build directory* are deleted. Also the normal other class files were
> shrunked in size. After a *clean and build* command there is also a *war*
> file created in the *dist* directory. When I restore the class files in the
> *war* file to the *build* directory suddenly the project will run. In
> Netbeans 9 everything works normally with the same project and Ant file. Also
> the Tomcat installation and JDK is the same. Later I found out that the
> problem depends on the project settings. When settings
> _Project->Build->Compiling->Compile-on-Save_ and

Can you maybe illustrate the problem by means of one of the examples built into
NetBeans -- I don't have your context, I would like to be able to reproduce it
but can't, so can you explain step by step by means of one of the existing PHP
samples in the New Project dialog or via a small project that you make
available?

Running and debugging single Java source files is possible from OpenJDK 11 and
later only.

> The single file was opened in Editor.
> This was an exercise from textbook.
>
> I did install NB12 to view how this new version could RUN and DEBUG a single
> file for a student.
> Then I set a breakpoint at a line of code.
> Then open DEBUG menu, press DEBUG a single file item. And then a popup window
> was shown with asking to submit a bug report.
> I am a newbie, then it is hard to correct send to you a bug report.
> Why NB did not have a mechanism automatically send bug-reports like others
> applications has?
> I send you a messages.log and even don't know is it correct.
> Now I have tried to debug that file like a single file. And a new popup
> window ask send a bug report again.
> Debugger console has:
> Listening on 59237
> User program running
> Fatal Error: Unable to find package java.lang in classpath or bootclasspath
> And by the way when popup window ask to copy, I could not copy the text in
> that window on Linux.

> UPDATE
> I have uninstalled NB12 with openjdk11 and then installed it again with
> openjdk8 without PHP and JavaEE and there was an issue. Even Editor did not
> start without special nb-javac.
> Then I have uninstalled NB12 with openjdk8 and have installed it again with
> openjdk11, but with /usr/lib/jvm/default-java and it looks like now debugging
> single java file works.
> At the first attempt (when this issue was opened) I used default suggestion
> (if I am rigth it was /usr) or (if I mistaked) java-1.11-openjdk-amd64 or
> java-11-openjdk-amd64, but not default-java.
> When I have opened the issue the 'run single file' worked, but 'debugging
> single java file' did not.

[jira] [Commented] (NETBEANS-4707) Netbeans 12 frozen on startup

This is being investigated and worked on at the moment.

But the bottom line is — are you going to get involved in the user testing
process for future LTS releases so that problems can be identified prior to
rather than after an LTS release? If not, this is the price we’re going to
continue to pay — problems being identified after rather than before a release
is done. Yes, this means getting involved on the dev and/or user mailing list
or the NetCAT mailing list (less traffic and specifically focused on testing
prior to releases).

The problem is the Knockout integration is old, has never been updated and
probably no one is using it. But there is a Knockout sample in the New Project
dialog that you should be able to use to reproduce this or use to try things
out.

We could simply remove the whole org.netbeans.modules.html.knockout module, it
is old and outdated anyway.
