[jira] [Comment Edited] (NETBEANS-1359) Profiling the IDE hangs when saving snapshot

Sven Reimers edited comment on NETBEANS-1359 at 10/20/18 1:42 PM:

Understood. AFAIK I read the code the toCompositeData is called only for
writing the collected ThreadInfo to the sample output stream. On the read part
I see
{code:java}
CompositeData infoData;
ThreadInfo thread;

try {
infoData = (CompositeData) in.readObject();
} catch (ClassNotFoundException ex) {
throw new RuntimeException(ex);
}
thread = ThreadInfo.from(infoData);
{code}
So it seems we are using the structure of the CompositeData as an API here,
which changed between JDK10 and JDK11 so reading a .npss written from an IDE
run with 8,9,10 and read by an IDE running on 11+ will definitely fail? Do we
rely on implementation details all the way down (looking at the IBM mechanics).
Seems there is more involved here, e.g. definition of new .npss format and some
more compatibility logic? [~jlahoda] What do you think?

I had a look and there is {code}ThreadInfo.from(CompositeData

Will ask on jdk mailinglist.

Sven Reimers commented on NETBEANS-1359:

Here is some first analysis.

there was a big change in StackTraceElementCompositeData. The exception we are
seeing (and what I saw in my debugging session) indicates that the sequences,
which shall be synchronized are indeed broken in JDK 11 (onwards?)

{code}

// CONTENTS OF THIS ARRAY MUST BE SYNCHRONIZED WITH
 // STACK_TRACE_ELEMENT_ATTRIBUTES!

final Object[] stackTraceElementItemValues = {
 ste.getClassLoaderName(),
 ste.getModuleName(),
 ste.getModuleVersion(),
 ste.getClassName(),
 ste.getMethodName(),
 ste.getFileName(),
 ste.getLineNumber(),
 ste.isNativeMethod(),
 };

...

private static final String[] V5_ATTRIBUTES = {
 CLASS_NAME,
 METHOD_NAME,
 FILE_NAME,
 LINE_NUMBER,
 NATIVE_METHOD,
 };

private static final String[] V9_ATTRIBUTES = {
 CLASS_LOADER_NAME,
 MODULE_NAME,
 MODULE_VERSION,
 };

private static final String[] STACK_TRACE_ELEMENT_ATTRIBUTES =
 Stream.of(V5_ATTRIBUTES, V9_ATTRIBUTES).flatMap(Arrays::stream)
 .toArray(String[]::new);

{code}

As far as I can see the synchronization is broken ->
{code:java}
Stream.of(V5_ATTRIBUTES, V9_ATTRIBUTES){code}
should be
{code:java}
Stream.of(V9_ATTRIBUTES,V5_ATTRIBUTES){code}
to make the sequence correct.

Digging further...

[jira] [Commented] (NETBEANS-963) java.lang.AssertionError: Debugger lock taken in AWT Event Queue!

Tried to reproduce, but all was ok.

Looked at the code and it seems that there is a fallback path where the thread
the method is called is used for acquiring the lock - not the current debugger
thread).

Not sure why this happens in your case.

Since the release will not have assertions enabled - this is probably not a
blocker.

There is a rectangle defined for the progress bar and another one for the text.
We can shrink the rectangle for the text without any problem, the messages will
just be shortened and an ellipse (...) added at the end.

I tried to move both things to the left under the logo, but it felt really bad.

Further details. It seems that the problem is that in JdbcGraphBuilder line 417
{code:java}
ClassRepository.lookupClass(STATEMENT_INTERFACE, 0){code}
is called but the original detected super interface for the loaded subclass was
in
{code:java}
ClassRepository.lookupClass(STATEMENT_INTERFACE, 2){code}
So it seems that with 10 (or 9 did not try this out) there is not only
classLoaderId 0 but in my sample at least up to id 2 ..

Anyone able to explain? Will keep digging.

I did a bit of debugging and it seems the culprit is that the SQLProfiling
tries to filter on methods called on subclasses of java.sql.Statement and
java.sql.Connection (see lines 234 and 253 in
org.netbeans.lib.profiler.results.jdbc.JdbcGraphBuilder). Here the problem
starts. For this detection the ClassRepository is queried to check if theClass
is a subclass of Statement or Connection. But the Repository gives a back an
empty list for clazz.getSubclasses() (line 419 in
org.netbeans.lib.profiler.results.jdbc.JdbcGraphBuilder).

So it seems the initialization has failed somehow (this works on Java 8). Any
pointers appreciated. Digging deeper.

> Expected behavior: Exception Reporter should file bugs in the new Apache JIRA
> issue tracker instead of the old Bugzilla system.
> It's not clear (to me at least) what metadata you need to store outside of
> individual bug reports, so that needs to be fleshed out because Apache might
> have provide the necessary infrastructure to host it.

2018-02-25 Thread Sven Reimers (JIRA)

Sven Reimers commented on NETBEANS-416:
---

I just had a brief look at the profiling output. It looks like the CPU time is
spent doing something in MasterFS, so probably something changed on disk and
NetBeans was picking this up. Not sure if this intended if NetBeans is in the
background. So my first quick idea is to check if you have something sitting on
a slow filesystem (or even an antivirus watching NetBeans cache directories
etc.).

Anyone out there with more knowledge about the filesystem watching that is
implemented in NetBeans? Would there be any additional benefit to investigate
if moving to newer Java 8 API's may help?

> Hey,
> Something I have noticed in Netbeans is that from time to time Netbeans CPU
> usage will go up to around 20% and most of the times I have Netbeans in the
> background so I am not doing anything in Netbeans.
> Please fix this as this is a huge annoyance.
> Edit: To further explain why this is a huge annoyance: Netbeans will trigger
> my laptop fans with the usage of CPU when it's not doing anything.
> Please someone analyze the profiler and tell me if I have a plugin that is
> doing this or this is netbeans.
> I am really considering changing IDEs because of t his.
