I see that [PR #2700|https://github.com/apache/netbeans/pull/2700] and [PR
#2853|https://github.com/apache/netbeans/pull/2853] are both merged, and the
tags on the commit from 2853 show {{12.4-rc1}} and {{12.4-rc2}} among others.
Should the _fixVersion_ be updated to 12.4 on this ticket so in can be included
in the 12.4 release notes? I did not see it listed on the [12.4 confluence
page|https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/NETBEANS/Apache+NetBeans+12.4].

[~peterhull90] I tried the workaround you suggested. Your file paths were
correct. It seems to be working. I am seeing this warning, but the profiler is
running and providing me with data. I do not see the warning when running the
program without profiling:

I happened to run into this same issue and tried [~peterhull90]'s suggested
workaround. It does seem to work fine with NetBeans 12.0 on Oracle JDK 14.0.2
and Windows 10.

Then restart Netbeans.

I am having this problem with this with AdoptOpenJDK 11.0.9 and Netbeans 12.0
LTS. Only happens when I try to profile Methods. It happens with even the
simplest Java program/Netbeans Project. I reported it to AdoptOpenJDK, and they

I am not able to reproduce it. I can also confirm that in NetBeans 12 using
Azul Zulu JDK with JFX that I am not able to profile methods. I can do Objects
fine without issues.
For what it's worth, I am working on a NetBeans platform application and we are
using NetBeans 12. In NB 12 we've left the NB profile button visible next to
the memory usage in the toolbar. I can effectively profile application which
profiles the methods this way which produces an npss (a profile snapshot) file
and then perform my analysis in NB by loading this file. The application uses
the same java version but the JRE and works. So technically NB should be able
to do it.

Based on testing NetBeans 12 beta 4 and using Azul Zulu JDK 11 this issue has
been resolved for me. I was experiencing the same issue on previous versions as

I've put in a PR but I need some help:
* I've created a zip file with binaries of the libraries but it needs to be
uploaded to OSUOSL before a 'normal' build of Netbeans will be able to use it
(and I guess we don't want this until it's been tested!)
* The license of the binaries is still CDDL - how do we change this to Apache.
This is problematic because not all of the binary libraries have been updated
(i.e. for the older Unix platforms)

Sure thing [~peterhull90]. I must not know how to use Jira because I didn't
see any comments when I posted mine, so I wasn't aware how much progress had
been made in tracking down this windows-specific problem. I had checked the
log before I posted and it looked similar to mine, but I also don't know how to
read a crash log, so they probably all look the same to me. I'll be able to
recreate my crash log on Tuesday and I'll create a new ticket, then. Thank you

Hi David,
I am not sure your crash is the same, since the root cause of this bug was an
assumption in the native C code that sizeof(long) == sizeof(void*) which is
true everywhere but Windows 64 bit. So, Linux should not be affected. Also, the
crash was immediate, no profiling was done. If you wouldn't mind, please could
you check your crash log against the one here:

and unless it really is the same, file a new bug with your crash log, Linux

I see the same crashing behavior on Linux with OpenJDK 11 using NetBeans 11.2.
(profiling starts, but after a while, the JVM that is being profiled crashes.)
This works when I try to profile a JVM that is running JDK 1.8 (from Oracle).

It's been quite a while since this was first noted so I have gone back over the
old information.
# The crash is caused by some incorrect casts in the C code on Windows (32bit
vs 64bit issues were not considered) and this is fixed by the changes mentioned

about the JVM which is not correct and therefore the solution is fragile and

I tested the new DLL--it works!!
Here's what I did:
1) Start a Java profiling session via the "-agentpath" JVM argument and
invoking "Attach to External Process". Shortly thereafter the JVM crashes with
the "SUREFIRE-859: # EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc005) at
pc=0x5f131f25, pid=10112, tid=23396" error (and a long JVM dump).
2) Download Peter Hull's recompiled profiler binaries from
https://github.com/pedro-w/incubator-netbeans/releases/tag/v0.1-alpha , and
paste the two files (profilerinterface.dll and profilerinterface.map) into
NetBeans\profiler\lib\deployed\jdk16\windows-amd64 (overwriting the two
existing files).
3) Repeat (1) again. No crash this time, everything works fine!
This is great. Very happy that the profiler functionality will be working
again, for newer JDKs. Thanks, Peter!

The problem was some incorrect assumptions about the size of longs and pointers
in the C-code causing truncation. I have fixed this, but I general I worry
about the scheme they used to map _jmethodid_s to _jint_s; the former being a
pointer and the latter being a 32-bit int.

I ran the anagram game under JDK11 and attached the VisualVM profiler to it. It
works a bit different (like the old NetBeans) so 'CPU' does roughly the same as
'Methods'. I was not able to cause a crash with VisualVM.

* Only on Windows
* For JDK 9 and later
* On JavaSE, Maven and Freeform projects
* Only when profiling "Methods" (either alone or when "Methods" is one of the
multiple methods)
I don't think we know enough to say "it appears to be a problem on the JDK
level" - the crash occurs when JVM's JNI methods are being called from Netbeans
native code. It may indeed be a JVM bug, but if JNI calls are incorrect and the
JVM crashes, that's Netbeans's fault.

It's hard to understand from this issue which kinds of projects this applies to
(someone mentions Java Ant free-form, someone else mentions Maven-based
project) and whether it is "Methods" but not for "Objects", "Threads" or
"Locks".
Can everyone who can reproduce this try to reproduce this specifically with the
Anagram Game, i.e., one of the standard samples in Apache NetBeans -- and then
also be very specific whether it is a problem in profiling "Methods" but not
for "Objects", "Threads" or "Locks" etc?
In any case, since it appears to be a problem on the JDK level, it cannot be a
blocker for releasing Apache NetBeans, since nothing in Apache NetBeans can be
changed to fix this, if it is a blocker on the JDK level.

Not sure of the criteria for blocker but the consequence of this bug is that a
sizeable portion of Profiler functionality isn't available on Windows, and
there is no workaround.
I have tried to diagnose this myself (see [mailing list|
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/netbeans-dev/201811.mbox/%3CCAK9Gx1e-fdR5yG2bvwDehX7Rfg6B0emf13TYjeh1zC6P4YVwCg%40mail.gmail.com%3E])
but I am missing some basic techniques when it comes to debugging a secondary
JVM + native code. If I had a bit of guidance I feel that I could make progress
on this.

I've observed this profiler crash on Windows 10 as well. In my case I was using
"Attach to External Process" in a Maven-based project. The crash occurs
consistently on Java 9.0.7.1, Java 10.0.2, and Java 12-ea, but did _not_ occur
on Java 8.0.181.

As far as I can tell it happens always for Profiler mode "Methods" but not for
"Objects", "Threads" or "Locks"
