[~solomax], IMHO not necessarily. [~jbi] said "when a participant is asked to
answer a question, he must quickly turn on and answer, and then also quickly
turn off.". This is "hold" functionality which is basically Mute/PTT
OPENMEETINGS-131, but for both audio and video simultaneously.
As I can see it OM can always initiate connections with both audio and video
tracks, but attach/detach actual feed to them with replaceTrack on user
request. The best thing about replaceTrack is it nearly instantaneous and
doesn't waste any bandwidth in null mode. The only downside is that client will
always encode both his audio/video even if doesn't send them to others which is
IMHO worth it as trade-off for instataneous switching. In that case under the
hood it will cover Mute, hide, PTT, hold, seamless switching to another webcam
like front/back camera of the phone and cases like OPENMEETINGS-2320.

[~NoSFeRaTU] in this particular case we need add/remove track, not replace
This need to be investigated when (and IF) I'll sort out current issues

[~sebawagner] adapter.js is not something we are using as wrapping library, it
is included to have unified API in all browsers (especially in Safari)

[~jbi] As I wrote before: UI is the only showstopper ATM.
I'm not sure such minor change worth separate room type :( (once it is added -
it will stay forever) so we can think twice
I'll get back to this issue as soon as some other issues with higher priority
will be sorted out

“Suddenly, everyone sees you inappropriately because the audio / video is
turned on without your knowledge” - really?
I consciously entered into the special room (participants are notified in
advance) in which the mic and the camera on / off together,
сlicking on the appropriate button and don’t know about it?

It is unfortunate that you did not hear me, right way.
Your project does not have to be like everyone else.
OpenMeetings provides many options for all those scenarios, but no one for my
narrow purpose.

I understood you. You focus on the majority: most people, most similar
applications.

Sebastian Wagner commented on OPENMEETINGS-2253:

[~jbi] I tend to disagree.

Mostly in "classroom" style sessions:
 * Most student would probably mostly rather just share audio-only on occasion
to say something
 * Most teachers would probably prefer to see the student while talking

Most conference room style sessions:
 * Most people still rather prefer audio only. To save bandwidth and also
because its irritating for a lot of people to have the video turned on all the
time

So most audio/video conferencing applications (Teams, Zoom, Facebook, Skype)
deliberately do not share audio/video with same button and by default.
Participants can choose what they want to share on demand. Usually before you
enter the room.

Its quite embarrassing to enter a conference room with 100+ people watching and
out of sudden they all see you in an inappropriate way cause audio/video is
turned on without you knowing.

I think OpenMeetings gives plenty of options for all those scenarios. I don't
really see the need for modifying the UI and behaviour to have mic and audio
enabled in single click.

However maybe some pre-screen in the video conferencing mode would be good to
confirm your settings. Before you enter. Which seems to be the way most
conference apps work now.

Sorry for my simplicity, but I see it like that:
#vars
cam=true
mic =true
if mic-not_exist/not_selected/not_connect/disabled_etc then mic=false
if cam-not_exist/not_selected/not_connect/disabled_etc then cam=false
# Events by clicking on new-button:
if (cam and mic) then do-stream-video-audio (both video+audio)
else if (cam and !mic) then do-stream-video (only video)
else if (!cam and mic) then do-stream-audio (only audio)
else if (!cam and !mic) then do-nothing (only hearing).

 About UI:
сan you make a special type of room, at the entrance to which one button will
be available, instead of separated two?
There are not needed all three buttons. Only one button is needed - this is the
general request.
Alternatively, you can make all 3 buttons, but add settings about their
availability and etc, I think, it depends on what is convenient for your code.
Thanks.

Let me describe our conference situation.
All participants enter the room as a moderator. Someone can be late and should
not get into the spotlight when enter.
Participants are usually people aged and conservative.
Main participant interviews other participant one by one. And each participant
closes it cam and mic after. (i.e. simply: video-audio stream opens and then
closes)

Sorry, but after much thought how to change algoritm, I'm returning to the
first question: why there is impossible make one button (and may be another new
type of room)?
It would be easier, doesn't it?

PS. sorry again, but "audio for everyone - and mute" this is not what we need.
We really liked the quality and functionality of your project (We compared with
others)
The main comment of our participants is the incomprehensible loss of video, and
the need to provide a simple, intuitive way to connect.

Maxim Solodovnik commented on OPENMEETINGS-2253:

[~sebawagner] As I wrote above:
The code to mute when microphone is OFF was eliminated due to all those check
was a nightmare
Right now the code is much simplier, but user can see some delay (during all
WebRTC ping/pongs)

I'm not aware if {{enabled}} property will work on track
According to MDN
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/AudioTrack/enabled it is NOT
supported by major browsers

[~jbi] According to my tests establishing WebRTC connection can took
significant amount of time
So your scenario "Quickly turn on - answer - turn off" might be no very quick

Why not to use "audio for everyone - and mute" ?
There is a ticket to create PTT (push-to-talk) this also can help

[jira] [Commented] (OPENMEETINGS-2253) Interruption of a video session when the microphone is turned on / off

Sebastian Wagner commented on OPENMEETINGS-2253:

yeah that might be an idea. But obviously the counter argument is:

Turning streams OFF vs mute is different in terms of bandwidth: You still
sending data and using bandwidth.

But maybe there isn't, in the "old" world clever browsers simply did send no
data if it was muted (although the stream was created).

[~solomax] do you really need to create a new stream to implement mute/unmute?

It seems you can toggle mute without it:

As long as its initially started. You can toggle it off, without recreating the
stream.

Thank you for the attention. Unfortunately, this mode is not suitable. We
need each conference participant enter quietly (especially if the conference is
already going)
Yes, you are right " the general request is make one button to turn on / off
together - both the camera and the microphone."
i.e. when a participant is asked to answer a question, he must quickly turn on
and answer, and then also quickly turn off.
Yesterday I upgraded to version M4. I liked the behavior of turning on the
microphone (before turning on the video) - window does not appear.
Now we recommend to particapants at first switch on mic, and then - camera.
I think, may be to change the code like this:
 - when the camera is turned on and the participant turns on the microphone,
then do unmute mic instead switch-on;
- when the camera is turned on and the participant turns off the microphone,
then do mute mic instead switch-off
And also, provide for option "audio switch-on" with default audio-muted.
Thanks.

[~jbi] looks like you can simply use the conference room of style "Conference"
and everybody will enter with audio/video turned ON by default. Which will do
what you are asking for.

Maxim Solodovnik commented on OPENMEETINGS-2253:

sure :)
but i would disagree this is the bug

As far as i can see from description: user uses on/off microphone as Mute
And it will not work like that

It is impossible to add/remove track to ongoing WebRTC connection, new one have
to be created
So to address this we need to:
# add audio track with gain == 0 if user has no right for audio, or choose not
to have this on
# play with gain in case audio was on/off

this will introduce all kind of troubles:
# permission checks on server need to be hacked
# logic on client will be ugly and complicated

this is why i have removed this code some time ago

Let me try this one. I'm having so much fun in debugging all those KStream
events. Maybe I can find something useful.
