The latest run seems fine. Very unpredictable.
https://builds.apache.org/job/hadoop-qbt-trunk-java8-linux-x86/584/artifact/out/patch-unit-hadoop-hdfs-project_hadoop-hdfs.txt

I'd like to get heap dump on and analyze it, however, I can't reproduce the
issue locally. OOM does not occur in my environment.

The hdfs unit tests are wildly unpredictable and no really seems to care enough
to fix them. Here's the full run of trunk from two days ago:

https://builds.apache.org/job/hadoop-qbt-trunk-java8-linux-x86/583/artifact/out/patch-unit-hadoop-hdfs-project_hadoop-hdfs.txt

Lots of OOMs there too. branch-2 is several times worse.

No unreaped processes is a great thing to see. But this also implies that
hadoop-hdfs-project's unit tests are broken beyond just that problem though. :(

[jira] [Commented] (HADOOP-13514) Upgrade maven surefire plugin to 2.19.1

2017-11-02 Thread Allen Wittenauer (JIRA)

Allen Wittenauer commented on HADOOP-13514:
---

Latest version of surefire is 2.20.1, released in September.

I've been spending a few weeks looking at our usage on the ASF build machines.
We typically have anywhere from 8 to 40 zombie JVMs running around after the
hadoop-common, hadoop-hdfs, and hadoop-mapreduce allegedly complete. These do
nothing but eat resources. As a result, timeouts are pretty normal and problems
that are claimed to be "environmental" are mostly self-inflicted by badly
written tests that really only get any stress on the build machines.

I'm fairly convinced that HDFS-12711 can be prevented with SUREFIRE-773, which
was closed as a dupe of SUREFIRE-524. At this point, I think we absolutely
need to make this a priority to get into at least trunk and branch-2 ASAP.

[It's easy to say... "this wasn't a problem before!"... I'm not so convinced it
wasn't. I think we just didn't see it as often. But new tests are doing new
things that eat more resources and stay around longer which impacts more runs.
Additionally, running unit tests under Docker guaranteed that when the
container died, so did all of these stale JVMs. ]

Just tracked this down as the reason my stack traces don't appear no more.

Before: full stack trace on assertion failure, including nested entries.
Enables me to track down the problem through copy and paste into IDE.

After: one line toString value of raised assertion.

BUILDING.txt is triggering unit tests at root. Try a patch without that change.

Akira Ajisaka commented on HADOOP-13514:

HDFS tests were skipped. I modified Dockerfile and it is in /dev-support, so
the precommit job runs unit tests from root directory, and it skips modules
after some module has failed. In
https://builds.apache.org/job/PreCommit-HADOOP-Build/13314/artifact/patchprocess/patch-unit-root.txt,
 hadoop-common has failed, so the modules after hadoop-common has skipped.

It seems that it is impossible to run hadoop-hdfs tests with the patch without
fixing all the tests before hadoop-hdfs module. :(

I am not sure why I didn't see OOM in my local env. But thanks [~vinayrpet] and
[~steve_l] for taking the action. I agree we should have enabled all hdfs/yarn
tests for any change in pom.xml.

[jira] [Commented] (HADOOP-13514) Upgrade maven surefire plugin to 2.19.1

2016-10-27 Thread Steve Loughran (JIRA)

Now, spawned process memory requirements are set in {{hadoop-project/pom.xml}

{code}
-Xmx2048m -XX:MaxPermSize=768m
-XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError
{code}

That is: 2GB and a heap dump.

* If the OOM is happening in the spawned process, then that is the line to
update; we'll need separate patches for branch-2 & maven
* if the OOM is happening in the maven process itself, then we'd need to change
the MAVEN_OPTS.

Which process do we believe is at fault here?

we're using Yetus for the run though; I'm trying to work out where that
MAVEN_OPTS variable is set

Assuming it is
patchprocess/yetus-0.3.0/lib/precommit/test-patch-docker/launch-test-patch.sh ,
(which is where I can find that env var being set in IDE)

I'll file a patch which bumps things to 1.25 G (1280M) and hope things go away.

Maybe it's asking for even more than usual. Apparently a search for the error
online brings up a StackOverflow topic placing this near the Xerces code —and
remember, to generate the XML result, surefire has to build up the entire DOM
of the output. If we've got a test which generates lots of console output, it
may be close to the edge in memory use —and the SF update tipping it over the
edge.

# I'm going to see if I can tweak the memory consumption of the HDFS preruns
... increase that, rerun the failed build. If the problem goes away, then roll
out the change to the (many) other builds. If it doesn't, rollback

Can you link to JIRAs of failed builds so I don' t have to chase this down? I'm
seeing https://builds.apache.org/job/PreCommit-HDFS-Build/17318/console timing
out, not OOM-ing

This has highlighted a problem which we need to to more of when playing with
maven: test all the hdfs and yarn builds before the upgrade. I propose that
from now on anything going near maven plugins needs to be also submitted to
hdfs and yarn builds

+1. My local test run passed almost all but 5 tests. The 5 failed tests appears
flaky and unrelated to the addendum patch.

bq. this property is also used in hadoop-yarn-registry/pom.xml so we probably
want to update that as well I guess?
Actually we don't need to update this because hadoop-yarn-registry is a
submodule of hadoop-project and the property is inherited.

Akira Ajisaka commented on HADOOP-13514:

Thanks [~jojochuang] for reporting this. I looked into this problem and found
that the problem is caused by SUREFIRE-649 (fixed in surefire 2.18).
Before SUREFIRE-649, {{System.getProperty("test.build.classes")}} was null, but
after SUREFIRE-649 the value is an empty string. Therefore the following method
returns {{"/" + basename + ".properties"}} when the value is an empty string.
Before the fix, the method returned {{"target/test-classes/" + basename +
".properties"}}.
{code:title=TestMetricsConfig.java}
  public static String getTestFilename(String basename) {
  return System.getProperty("test.build.classes", "target/test-classes") +
 "/"+ basename +".properties";
{code}
That way the tests save a file to
{{/hadoop-metrics2-azure-file-system.properties.properties}} and fail to save
it by permission error. Before the fix, the tests saved a file to
{{target/test-classes/hadoop-metrics2-azure-file-system.properties.properties}}.
I'm thinking we can fix by setting "test.build.classes" in pom.xml to fix this
issue.

> A lot of people working on Hadoop don't want to run all the tests when they
> develop; only the bits they're working on. Surefire 2.19 introduced more
> useful test filters which let us run a subset of the tests that brings the
> build time down from 'come back tomorrow' to 'grab a coffee'.
> For instance, if I only care about the S3 adaptor, I might run:
> {code}
> mvn test -Dmaven.javadoc.skip=true -Pdist,native -Djava.awt.headless=true
> \"-Dtest=org.apache.hadoop.fs.*, org.apache.hadoop.hdfs.*,
> org.apache.hadoop.fs.s3a.*\"
> {code}
> We can work around this by specifying the surefire version on the command
> line but it would be better, imo, to just update the default surefire used.
> {code}
> mvn test -Dmaven.javadoc.skip=true -Pdist,native -Djava.awt.headless=true
> \"-Dtest=org.apache.hadoop.fs.*, org.apache.hadoop.hdfs.*,
> org.apache.hadoop.fs.s3a.*\" -Dmaven-surefire-plugin.version=2.19.1
> {code}

Cancelling my +1. Hi [~ehiggs], would you replace 2.19 with 2.19.1?
