It turned out that aplay problem is due to sound card controls
misconfiguration, not some problem with kernel.
Whoose who have this problem, please try following state file:

there is not really anything i can post here, but ive noticed the
latest mplayer no longer resumes after pausing.
both space and p will pause the media, but neither of them will
resume. any ideas how to re-enable this important function?

Well, intone already does this automatically. Though, I'm not sure if this
reduces the audio quality or not.

I discovered that oss output of mplayer is about two times faster than
alsa (which is default in SHR-U). Adding ao=oss to mplayer config file
speed it up from 35% CPU to about 15%. This may require to modprobe
snd-pcm-oss.

acting with ID3 tags is required for
tags.
Install the equivalent library if you're using a distribution that has a
different name for this.
Install intone using --force-depends after that.

Try to remove ~/.intone. It segfaulted for me too, but removing of
~/.intone helped.
