Status of resellers (Was: GTA02 preorder please?)

2008-01-22 Thread Gilles Casse
Hello Michael,

So direct pre-orders to OpenMoko.com are unlikely but in fact, I guess
that some of us (in Europe for example) would prefer local resellers.

Btw, what is the status of local resellers for France?

Thank you

Gilles

Some time ago someone told the possibility to open a German base to
phisically send the phone to the european people, how is the status of
this thing too?

Thank you!

Hi Gilles,

I work for a UK based company with an office in the south of France.
We plan to use the FreeRunner as a business tool are actively looking
to become a reseller in the areas that we operate.

Hopefully we'll be able to provide you with a phone at some point :)

Thanks, Joseph

So how much will FreeRunner cost for end user approximately? As I
understand, resellers will buy FreeRunners for $450 and sell them for
about double price? And how about delivery cost?

I'm researching this within the company. I don't have an answer yet, but
I would agree with Tim, that it is unlikely that we will be able to set
up a pre-order system. It's not just an issue of the CC provider, but
rather with laws that prevent charging a credit card until the item
 purchased has shipped.

As a former employed at the Danish Consumer Agency I can confirm this
is the law in Denmark, too.

Would it be hard just to postpone the charging of the creditcard until
the order has shipped? (All Danish web shops do this. If an item is
temporarily out of stock your credit card will not be charged until
the item is in stock and shipped to you).

The good news is that we intend to build many more than before, so that
 pre-order won't be necessary.

I have done 5-10 talks on OpenMoko with more coming. After each talk
most of the audience is ready to buy (guesstimate in total: 500
handsets). I will not be surprised if FIC yet again underestimates how
many handsets should be build in the first run. The pre-order could at
least give an idea of that (plus I would have a pre-order URL to point
to in my presentation).

At Fosdem (the Free and Open Software Developers European Meeting)
there will be about 1500 people that are enthousiastic about open hardware
and open software. I'd guess that if you'd be there with 300-500 handsets,
most would be gone (sold) at the end of the weekend.

Since we have the harmonized EU market, you can order at any reseller
in Europe and they can easily ship to every country in the EU at
fairly reasonable cost and no special tax and duties considerations.
So you don't necessarily need to have one located in your local country.

There are some web-shops with a long tradition and experience in
selling the Sharp Zaurus and some will also offer the GTA02.

I am associated with one of these shops - The Handheld-Linux Shop
http://www.handheld-linux.com - but I can't tell you anything about
availablility and pricing of the GTA02. It is OpenMoko's role to make
such product announcements.

digital compass modules

i've got a project in mind for when my neo freerunner arrives, that
needs a digital compass. only a simple thing, probably 3 degree
accuracy would be enough.

so, can anyone recommend a suitable module? something less than $50?
