[WikiReader] Do no take it apart...

2009-12-07 Thread Thomas HOCEDEZ
Hi Wikireaders,

As you know (or will know) I took apart my Wikireader to view what lives
inside, and try to add some backlight.
This idea, as great as it can be, revealed to be a REALLY bad idea. The
WR's motherboard is link to the screen by two 'ribbons' conenctors (I
don't know the english name) which are REALLY thin and FRAGILE. I
removed them really carefully, though, the touch screen don't respond
anymore. :-(

I tried to resolder point by point this -really- thin ribbon, but
nothing did the trick

I'm in relation with the support team at Openmoko, who told me this
device is not designed to be hard-tweaked as the freerunner is. So this
kind of mistake is not covered by the warranty !
So, I just can ask you to avoid opening your WR. (the soft tweak is not
dangerous for the device, as all the system remains on the SD card)

For those who wants, I took some pictures, so if you want to see take a
look at http://freerunner.daily.free.fr

AstHrO,
Wikireader addict.

FSO's idle detection isn't aware of the keyboard input.

Illume queries hal for input devices to see if there's a keyboard present. The
new shr-u doesn't have hal installed by default, so illume isn't aware of the
keyboard.

Is this with fsodeviced? fsodeviced should recognize new input nodes on

Keyboard and Screen Rotation in SHR

2009-12-07 Thread Bernhard Hoell
All,

I have tried several solutions of screen rotation, but I always end up having
either a keyboard does not fit my screen layout .
Either the keyboard was invoked first when being in portrait mode and is
outside the visible sceen area when rotated to landscape mode or the keyboard
was invoked first in landscape mode that then is too wide for portrait mode
after rotation.
If I manually disable the keyboard in the illume settings
(WrenchKeyboardNone) and re-enable it I always get a keyboard that fits my
current layout.
So the most logical solution seems to me to combine screen rotation with
disabling/enabling the keyboard.
It would be great if someone could advise how to change the keyboard via using
the command line rather than clicking through the illume settings. This way I
could wrap things up in a script and would benefit from always being able
typing...

Thanks in advance,

Bernhard

Costa Rica 3G and Neo Freerunner.

2009-12-07 Thread Esteban Monge
Hello, today in my country starts to use the 3G technology, some people we
interested know if the Neo Freerunner works with 3G broadband internet.

The chips for 3G are same to GSM chips, also I can update to 3G only turn on
the 3G compatibility in the cellular phone with the GSM chip.

Can the Neo Freerunner work with 3G broadband internet?

I should have qualified my answer. I know this used to be the case, so I
jumped to the conclusion that the cause was still the same. I've not tried my
bluetooth keyboard since installing the new shr-u, but I will post logs if I
have the same problem when I do try it.

[shr-t] Importing (vcf) contacts -- again

2009-12-07 Thread Bernhard Reiter
Hi,

I've just flashed my FR to SHR-Testing (and it's great that there's a
-Testing branch again with promised opkg upgrade stability).

Now I think this question was raised in the past already, but I couldn't
really find anything that seemed to apply to the current state of SHR
(with opimd): How do I import my (evolution) contacts (eg as vcf)?

Kind regards,
Bernhard Reiter

Re: Costa Rica 3G and Neo Freerunner.

2009-12-07 Thread Ben Wilson
That's 3G SIM cards.

To support 3G a phone needs the hardware to transmit the 3G protocol and
frequency (3G chip inside) and a SIM card that supports 3G
The neo freerunner and 1973 don't have a 3G chip inside so cannot
connect to the 3G network.
A while back people were having problems using 3G SIM cards in the phone
(3G SIM card to connect to 2G network).
The phone wouldn't connect or would give issues so that page was setup
to list which 3G SIM cards would work on the phone (2G connection).
As far as I know the latest GSM firmware fixed those issues.

Ben.

I think we mean different things when we talk about 'chips'. That page is
talking about SIMs, the small cards that you plug into the phone, supplied by
the service provider. The Freerunner can use 3G SIMs. Arne is talking about
the modem hardware in the phone. The modem hardware in the Freerunner only
works with 2G networks.
