Be careful what you wish for :-) The physical SIM serves as an
authentication token, which is why they are made difficult to copy. If you
lose a phone (or an SD card) with a copy of your SIM credentials, anybody
finding it can make phone calls at your expense, and (at least in the case
of the SD card) you might not notice the loss until this problem had become
very expensive. And don't look for a freefund -- I doubt that any carrier
would be at all sympathetic to *this* sob story!

Another 'nice' addition to this would be a application which generates random
SIM cards, until you find one which actually connect to the network. I anyone
pulls off the SIM copy functionality someone else will do this and one day
they may hit your SIM. Leaving your phone out of sight for a few minutes may
put you at risk of having your SIM card cloned, and you won't know until its
to late. And using your SIM for criminal activities sure beats an anonymous
prepaid card.

I'm all for functions to copy phonebook data and other stuff like that,
actually i'd consider that basic functionality for any GSM phone, but cloning
the authentication part of a SIM card is a can of worms I'd rather keep
tightly closed.

SIM cards are smartcards. They can not be copied by design!

The only way to duplicate a SIM is to hack it. No idea if and how far
that is possible. But it is certainly not legal.

Ask your provider for a duplicate SIM. Many providers will give you
multiple identical SIM if you need them. (At least here in germany)

They only copy readeable data like address books and alike.
Not the entire sim.

You could route the pins from the gsm moduleto another SIM slot than the
builtin. You could even do this via network (probably with some
additional hardware).

Like a giant virtual extension cord.

You could even design a dual sim slot where you can switch over from one
sim to another. (and reset the gsm modem if you switched)

But you will always need a sim in hardware. ;)

Having a feature like this is not going to create a higher incidence of SIM
theft, the technology is already out there (there are even software programs
that can steel much of your key info out of the air), knowing that, you
should just watch where you put your phone and keep tabs on your cellphone
account, if you see unusual activity freeze your data services. I think this
would be a great feature to have if it were not illegal, this is debatable
of course, but OpenMoko might not want to get into such a situation. I think
a SIM copy for contacts should be included. As far as multi SIM calling
support, how about a dual SIM slot with one inside (your home one) and a
slot you can access from the outside, like a SD slot, for changing SIM you
use in other areas.

Re: Sean's impact being felt...

2007-11-28 Thread Shawn Rutledge
I was wondering if Apple negotiated something... they have an
exclusive with Cingular for the current iPhone but maybe it doesn't
prevent them from also selling a different phone for CDMA. And maybe
they just don't like being exclusive, and wanted to have control of
their own marketing/branding, so they insisted on the CDMA phone being
unlocked. Not that that would require Verizon to be an open network
necessarily, but it could be related somehow...

Oh and the Amazon Kindle is on the CDMA network too. Hmmm.
Apparently CDMA can be very low-power, somehow.

Anyway it seems to be a big change; always GSM has been the more open
network just because you can put your SIM in any compliant phone
without asking first, whereas to switch a different phone onto your
Verizon account, you have to go through an activation process. Even
still, how could that change? They might just be less picky about
which phones they will activate, but activation would still have to
occur.

The talk about virtualizing SIMs is kindof ironic in that the
existence of the SIM card, and the fact that GSM is a global standard,
has been a force pushing towards openness of phones. If every network
required activation, it would be very hard for the OpenMoko project
to exist. Personally I switched a couple years ago after I realized
what a mistake it was to be on Verizon, because GSM is where the
action is. Now that may change, and EVDO is so attractive after
all...

Anybody working on porting Linux to any existing CDMA phones? Like
the Moto Q maybe?

Speaking of the Kindle, another fun project would be to create a
combination phone/ebook reader, with a large (roll-up?) eInk display.
But there is such a huge price gap between the eInk developer kits and
the actual devices; they don't make it very easy to get started. It
would be much cheaper to hack an ebook than to build a new one.

Can openmoko and FIC help the Redux model 1?

2007-11-28 Thread andy selby
At a recent conference the hosts gave away a free iPhone to its
attendees but they were annoyed that they couldn't buy them in bulk
and other things, long story short for the next conference they have
proposed designing and building a completely open Internet tablet.
http://www.o2con.com/thread/1045

One of the designs uses the neo1973 and openmoko as its base
http://itredux.com/blog/2007/09/17/openmoko/

They seem to have some seriously heavy hitting sponsors (especially if
they can pay for a full price iPhone for each conference attendee).

I left a message on the blog to contact Sean (hope that's alright), I
should have mentioned something about enlightenment on the neo because
they seem to like iPhone like eye candy.

With their money and FIC/the openmoko community's experience we could
do for Internet tablets what we're doing for phones.
