Re: Shipping to canada...

2008-07-04 Thread Dave O'Connor
Hello.
I'm in Canada too and myself and Railer from the #openmoko along with
someone in my group have been doing some research into this.

UPS Suck, they screw you on two main fees, brokerage (customs clearance)
and bond fees.

Bond fees are for them putting up the money for GST which you can pay to
them when the package is in transit if you want to avoid it.

Brokerage fees are the even bigger scam and these are for clearing
customs. (These don't have to be paid at all using fedex or USPS and if
openmoko would notice this in the future and allow more options it would
be very much appreciated :) )

We worked it out that it's just 10 dollars extra to send it expedited
and that includes all of their scam fees.

You can do brokerage yourself and you'd have to look into it and see how
to do it in Alberta. For us this would involve rejecting the package and
their extra fees, going to their depot, which is near the airport in
Vancouver but I don't know what applies to you, and then going to
customs. That's too much time off work for me to be worth it so we're
going to go for the expedited delivery which is much faster and only 10
dollars more expensive than standard delivery + scam fees

Did I mention UPS suck?

Regards
Dave

Shipping to canada...

2008-07-04 Thread Matthias Stone
These are probably silly questions, but I ask anyway (and thank you for your
replies)

a) In shipping the phone (freerunner) to Canada, are any taxes/duty/fees
applied? (buying from openmoko.com webstore)

b) How long would you expect it to take to ship to Alberta using the normal
(aka cheapest) shipping rate?

Thanks,

i don't think the card is the problem, but the freerunner. The card works in
all phones (3G and non3G) i have tried, excluding the FR, so i think there
HAVE to be a bug or something else, but no idea how to find out what could

I asked my provider for a new card now and he said he will send me one.

Steve has mentioned several times that "while supplies last", they would be
sending laser stylii, 512MB microSD cards and a headset with the 10-pack
orders. Once they run out, they run out, and they'll send a plastic stylus
with each phone.

Openmoko doesn't want to be in the business of selling stylus pointers,
microSD cards, screen protectors, headsets, carrying pouches, etc.
They'd rather leave that to after-market entrepreneurs.

Brian, and others in the Bay Area,

The Fremont facility is not at all set up to do this. However, Steve is
doing everything he can to figure out a way to do this in spite of this
fact.

Give him a little time - he's deeply involved in trying to keep the
ordering and shipping running smoothly.

Thanks for understanding,

freerunner shipment confirmation?

2008-07-04 Thread Jayesh Salvi
Hi,

I bought freerunner few hours ago from the online shop. The transaction went
through after at least 3 different redirections for payment processing.
AFAIR, in step 1 they took my shipping information; in step 2 they directed
me to some Taiwanese site for credit card information; and I believe the 3rd
step was my credit card specific which did some kind of verification for my
Chase Visa credit card. At the end of 3rd step I got some error and couldn't
proceed or go back from there. I however received an email confirmation for
that 3rd step from Visa.

What concerns me is, I did not get any confirmation email that OpenMoko has
received my order successfully. I know the shipment hasn't started yet and
the shipment notification may come sometime later. But should I be getting
any confirmation/receipt of transaction from OpenMoko or from the third
party site that processed my order?

It has been couple of hours now. Has anyone else received
confirmation/receipt by email while placing the order (for single unit)?

Thanks,
Jayesh

Hi all,

I just got my Freerunner today and I'm having trouble with my Vodafone

The SIM-card is almost 3 years old now and works fine in my old Benq EL-71.
This might be a 3G Sim card, does anyone know how I can check if it is one?

Well if anyone is going, maybe he/she can recommend invitations for
some of the rest of us. But the total is only 250 people, so I
suppose they are pretty choosy.

Recognize also that you'll have to either add the ID resistor yourself,
or manually enable 1A charging via software.

SIM problems

2008-07-04 Thread Tobias Diedrich
Hi all,

I just got my Freerunner today and I'm having trouble with my
Vodafone prepaid SIM card.
The SIM-card is almost 3 years old now and works fine in my old
Benq EL-71.
This might be a 3G Sim card, does anyone know how I can check
if it is one?

In the Freerunner, registering with the network does not work:

Hi,

I guess you should have a look at the wonderful job done by balrog here :

http://unadventure.wordpress.com/2008/06/08/accelerating-in-my-pocket/

He report QVGA @25fps for MPEG-4 video and managed to have the glamo do
the hardware scaling.

Can't wait this gets into the official media player.

I'm guessing that their current lineup of phones are so locked up in
terms of software ability, it's never been *tried* before on TMobile's

Works in my bit of central England. As noted elsewhere ttff is a bit slow, but
probably no worse than my Garmin Geko. Tracklogs from tangogps are no worse
than from the Garmin, probably better, and once it's got the fix it holds it
better than the Garmin. I'll try to test them side by side over the weekend.
I don't have an external antenna to compare.

At least for desktop PCs it's no problem at all.
I don't know if the usb host can provide enough power, but with a powered
hub it should work.
On the user side it's no difference to the internal modem of the neos.

If you think that's funny, T-Mobile wifi (in the US) allows you to route
port 53/UDP to the world before you pay them. So OpenVPN to a machine on
port 53 and you're golden.

There is a common mistake in the geek community that once people are aware
of the problems, they fix them.

I did some basic testing with video and mp3:
Both works, mp3 without any problem, video the resolution/quality fits.
The Freerunner plays [EMAIL PROTECTED] fps at a reasonable bitrate. No
difference
between internal flash and the microSD.
The problem is, that this only works without scaling. If you want to play it
fullscreen without wasting too much screenspace: forget it.
The CPU cannot do the softwarescaling.

Re: GSM Carrier

2008-07-04 Thread Michael P. Cosby
Well that's not really "easy". Remember, this is a mobile phone. So
it's either completely closed or closed enough to make a project like that
exceedingly difficult. So unless you happen to have a truly open phone (say,
one running openmoko?) it's close enough to impossible that the carriers don't
worry about it. And it'll probably take a lot of openmoko-based phones doing
this before it becomes worth their time to try to plug the "hole".

Seems this one has something to do with my NAT'ing firewall/router.
When I tried from a computer with a direct connection to the Internet,
it went through without a problem. I tried all combinations of Firefox
2, Internet Explorer, and Firefox 3 and the only difference in the
systems was the network connection (and the fact that the one that
worked--with the direct connection--was running Windows, but I'm pretty
sure that's not the issue).

As I really wanted to get the phone, I didn't mess around with NAT
settings to see exactly what was causing the issue, but I'm happy to do
further testing.

I really hope their web site recognizes that internal networks exist, too...

USB UMTS Stick

2008-07-04 Thread Ingmar RIeger
Hello,

is it possible to use a USB UMTS Stick like the ones from t-mobile
(http://www.t-mobile.de/surfpakete/0,12442,17837-_,00.html) at the
usbhost of the FreeRunner? Are the kernel modules available or
compilable?
An is there a firmware for such sticks or isn't one needed? I know that
many sticks are supported by linux, but whats with arm-linux? And is the
stick-firmware, if there is one, depending on the hosts architecture?

I think abaout this because I'm thinking about buying a 3G-Stick if
it'll work for use with my notebook and the FR, if I have ordered and
get min.

In Costa Rica I have never been able to get a fix. I never tried for
longer than half an hour though.

And I haven't tried with an antenna either. I should get one.

Re: GPS

2008-07-04 Thread Kai Römer
I can affirm this for 6 opemoko devices. i guess its an internal
antenna issue. as soon as you connect a external antenna to it works
like a charm. but fur me thats no solution.

TTFF with external antenna (perfect condition): 40 to 60 seconds
TTFF with internal antenna AGPS (perfect condition): more than 1:20
minute but not always. its like gambling.

I guess a miss design of the internal antenna.

So far i have tested 6 OpenMokos in Germany. With the internal antenna
i never got a fix in less than 1min 20 secs if ever (2 hours) (Perfect
conditions/ sirf3 need 36 sec cold boot). Even when i use AGPS. As
soon as i attach a external antenna it easily finds a lot more
satellites and connects withing 40 to 50 seconds. So i think its
neither a software issue nor a satellite visibility problem but a
problem with the internal antenna or the wiring to this internal
antenna.

Can someone test this too and affirm my results?

Well, I happen to have a bunch of friends which are not tech geeks,

This is the same open/closed problem that exists with many protocols.
I find it inconvenient chatting to people on the MSN or Yahoo!
messenger networks, and later Word documents feature password
protection which may render them difficult to read in other word-
processors.

Plus, I am using SkypeIn/SkypeOut plan. I don't have a cell phone.
So I hope I can continue using it on my new handset.

Well, if you have a new Openmoko handset one would expect you to get
a cell phone plan.

PS: If you wanna call a traditional telephone from a VoIP client,
there must be a company providing the service to bridging Internet
and telephony network, right? Do you have such open source
solutions? I think the company need to pay money to telephony
service operator. Who will pay it?

This is basically the same as the SkypeOut plan you mention. You pay
for that, right? The difference is that, using a standard SIP client,
you have a choice of multiple providers (who may offer competing
rates and quality of service) and you may run the telephony-out on
your own landline.

Skype is great for individuals - if we ignore the Freedom element of
the software & service - but SIP allows you much more flexibility.
Sure, there would appear to be fewer people using standard SIP
(although here in the UK many broadband suppliers offer discount /
free phone plans which involve connecting a standard telephone
handset to a DSL router which has a telephone socket and runs SIP
software) but you can certainly make free internet calls with it. Not
only that, but you can enable multiple clients to do so at one
location, transfer calls cleverly between them, do call-forwarding,
and if they need to phone out to the conventional telephony network
then one billing account can be used for multiple users (presumably
giving cost savings).

Geeks like SIP because they can run it on their own Linux server or
choose to rent hosting. They can run clients on their PCs, on Macs on
under Linux, on any mobile handset they like. We can rent multiple
phone numbers - with non-geographic area codes (0845 or freephone),
or with area codes in London or Los Angeles - and then do what the
heck we like with those calls. We can answer them at the telephone on
our desk or with software on our laptops; we can route them to
different destinations depending on the time of day and allocate
different extensions to different desks in the office. Outgoing calls
can be routed by different providers depending upon costs - SIP can
be used to link branch offices with free internet calls (multiple
calls simultaneously) and calls outside the office can go through an
ISDN bank, if you prefer that to paying someone else for point-of-
presence on the POTS network.

If you have friends who use Skype there's not much you can do about
it - evangelising SIP is about effective as telling them to use Linux
instead of Windows - but outside of the free calls there are VERY
many advantages to open protocols.

Hi there,

I'm interested in this type of headset, too.

The Sony Ericsson HBH-DS205 looks nice - I assume it has a microphone
built in to the "clip" unit? - but £40 (from an Amazon reseller) is a
little more than I'd prefer to pay.

I have these alternatives bookmarked at present:
http://preview.tinyurl.com/6zf6lx
http://preview.tinyurl.com/5knqh7
http://preview.tinyurl.com/5dews6
[sorry - this last link adds to cart, but I can't find any other
way to link to this site.
You may need to click on "view cart" to view the actual headphones]

I'm able to find a poor review for each of these products, but the
most prominent Amazon reviews give them each 5 stars. Since there
seem to be a couple of people here who are very happy with the HBH-
DS205, I can't rule that out, but I would love to be able to consider
these three headsets, too.

Perfect ! I was just going to order an invisibleShield, choosing one
for a phone with similar size, (I was ready to cut it to adjust...)

But :
- is full body coverage made up from different parts (screen / body)
? I don't think it is possible to cover both with the same sheet (not
flat)

- is screen sheet a bit larger (or smaller), or exactly at the size of
the visible part of the screen ?
I thought I'd better put a sheet a bit larger on the naked LCD, by
first putting off the case of the Freerunner... with the added
advantage to have the sheet acting as a joint for dust/water drops...
(and that is also why I was not afraid to cut a sheet by myself...
rough edges would be hidden ! )
