Bill Sun, Los Angeles Group Sales
Does anyonw know Bill Sun from the LA Group Sales wiki page? http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/GroupSales#Los_Angeles He's our 10th buyer and the only person I have not heard from yet. If I can't get a response from him in a week, I've got a buyer from San Diego who is interested in picking up the extra Freerunner in our order. Can the person in charge of the Community mailing list check if Bill entered his name when he subscribed, and send me his direct Email address so I can try again to contact him? anyone know when the phones are actually shipping within the US?
Hey all, Does anyone know when the phones are shipping in the US? One source I've read say they'll ship tomorrow, Monday July 7th, but I'm curious if they're shipping in the order they were bought? Will we get a follow-up Email with a shipping/tracking number? I'm trying to schedule a meet-and-geek for the Los Angeles group that coordinated for a bulk purchase, but without any firm expectation of when the phones will be in, it's hard to tell everyone when to show up to get their phones. Re: ancient hardware?
I wouldn't focus on the age of the hardware at all. The real question is whether this will be a hardware platform that others will be able to build innovation on top of. With phone companies making available only applications which earn them money you have not really seen the same kind of innovation that we saw in the PC space in the early 90's. It will no doubt be a success in its own right, but what about other ideas... * IP phone over Wifi and integrate with Asterisk IP phone systems - changes to GSM outside the office. * In car navigation system. * Low cost taxi fare system. * Courier driver system that minimizes route time and allows dispatch to communicate. * Robotic platform and robotic control * Hospitals - used by nurses and doctors for prescriptions and observations as low cost tablet. The Neo could open up hundreds of vertical market opportunities that the Telco's currently have no interest in tapping. If you think that the Neo is simply a different kind of iPhone you are missing the point. Many applications may use GPRS, but may not even implement phone functionality. Some may not even use GSM. To me the attraction is that it has been designed from the ground up to run Linux, and there is a dedicated team working on the frameworks that will make delivery of these applications possible. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
Re: questions about our mailinglists
I was a little confused about all the lists myself. I have started developing apps on the Openmoko, but not for the core - aka I doubt my apps would ever be distributed as part of a standard distro as they focus on robotics. I think it would be good to rationalise the number of lists. Right now I simply subscribe to many lists. ancient hardware?
Hello, I've seen a number of remarks on this list that the hardware in the FR is ancient and this is the price of openness and freedom. I did a quick search for some of the parts: The Samsung 2442 SoC seems to date back to 2005. I got this from the revision history in the user manual [1]. The Antaris 4 GPS chip dates back to 2006. This is the from the 0635 datasheet revision history [2]. The Calypso GSM chip dates back to 2000. This is from the leaked hardware definition manual revision history [3]. The Accton 3236 WiFi chip dates back to 2006. This is from the ``2006.12'' at the end of the datasheet [4]. I haven't looked at the other chips. From the above, the GSM chip looks ancient. However, the other chips don't seem that old. And some recent devices are using these parts as well. For example, the RoverPC C6 introduced in December 2007 uses the Samsung 2442B at 300MHz. So, I don't understand the comments on ancient parts. What have we compromised on by choosing these parts? Thanks. Re: Software Status Update
GTK is under LGPL and Qtopia is under GPL. This may mean nothing for the individual developer, but under GTK we may expect more "commercial", proprietary applications appearing. One can buy "commercial" license for Qtopia as well but this costs money. It is up to you to decide if more proprietary applications is bad or good thing. It may well be that the freedom - loving community may choose to enforce all contributors to share the source code, caring less about "this second" popularity. But this thing with the two licenses is important to remember when making decisions. Most modern Linux distributions would run both QT and GTK applications. Keeping this may not be just a purely technical decision. It may make a lot of sense to do the same on OpenMoko. Re: Mapless GPS
The GPS Sight team thinks that to have such mapless GPS navigator it is the amazing idea. This is something on that we would definitely plan to work. It would the be nice to have a built - in compass sensor as some watches do as the the instructions would depend on how the device is oriented. But the moving vector clearly indicates where is the "front" of the user, so we would also known where his left and right side. The desired coordinates can likely be entered directly from the touchscreen keyboard. Not very elegant but at least simple to use. Thank you once again on giving hints on this. dfu-util upload problems
Hi, I have a little problem with dfu-util and my new Freerunner. I thought I'd make a backup of my Neo's filesystem before flashing new images onto it, so I tried to use dfu-util in upload mode to transfer the content of the Neo's flash to my desktop PC. Backing up the kernel partition works, but when I back up the rootfs partition dfu-util transfers about 247MB and then dies with "dfu_upload error -84", while the phone immediately reboots. It always dies at the same position, but I'm not sure whether the backup is complete or not. Further details: I've tried it on my desktop and on my laptop PC, with Ubuntu 7.10, Ubuntu 8.04 and a grml live-cd, with various dfu-util binaries and one built from SVN, but the error appeared every time. The phone was hooked up directly to the host (no hub or something), U-Boot version on the phone is the originally installed 1.3.2-moko12 from May 9. Any ideas what's wrong? I'll see what I can do, but it'll mean tracking down a bunch of dependencies built at the same time, and sorting myself some externally available web space. It's really the sort of thing that should be in the community repository someone mentioned last week. If you have a working mokomakefile it's very easy to build yourself though: make build-package-matchbox-keyboard-inputmethod This makes the packages but doesn't update the package list in the repository directory, so opkg won't find it. I just rebuild the last image I made to do this, but there must be a more efficient way. You need to share the repository directories (under build/tmp/deploy/glibc/ipk/ ) and add them under /etc/opkg/ on the Freerunner. I just copied the existing files, prefixing them with local-, and edited them to point at a local httpd serving the directories. After that just 'opkg update' then follow the instructions at http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Switching_Keyboards ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
Re: GPS
>From what I've seen on the wiki the version of the Antares4 on the GTA02 doesn't have the memory needed to store almanac and ephemeris, last known position or time. This means that every start is a true cold start, unlike every other reasonably modern GPS we're comparing it to. It starts up thinking the time is midnight on 30th November 1999 and seems to need a fair bit of decent signal to convince it otherwise, contributing to the long startup time. It looks like there is a way around this if you look at the documentation for the assist. The AID-INI message needn't be supplied by a remote server; we can generate it locally to provide the sort of data that's stored internally most of the time. At the very least we have a fair idea of the current time and date. We should also be able to store location, almanac and ephemeris when we shut down the GPS, and provide it at the next startup. We can also have a stab at current location, based perhaps on cell ID or wifi data as discussed by some of the other threads, or on user input. I'll try to patch together something to do this based on the example perl client and server code, and see how much difference it makes. Re: WLAN not working
Exactly what are you using in your config files, and what commands are you running? Which image are you using? Are you using a configuration that's known to work with your network on another machine? You could also try using wpa_cli to tell you a bit more about what's going on. Using the /etc/network/intercfaces method after running ifup eth0 I get an error from busybox sed which desn't accept the --quiet option, followed by: WPA: configuring interface ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Operation not supported ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Operation not supported ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Operation not supported ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Operation not supported udhpc(v1.0.2) started Sometimes wpa_supplicant associates before udhcpc times out, and sometimes I have to rerun it to get an address. If anyone knows how to so debian-style network configs so that udhcpc is run on wpa_supplicant association as it is on gentoo I would love to know! Occasionally, for reasons I haven't yet discovered, wpa_supplicant fails to associate with the access point, then without changing the configs it will work again. mokomakefile, eclipse
hi, right now i am trying to set up a build environment w/ mokomakefile on debian/unstable following > http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/MokoMakefile firstly, debian/sid does not know cogito and g++-3.4 anymore. while cogito uis replaced with several *git* packages ( Package cogito is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source However the following packages replace it: gitk git-svn git-email git-cvs git-core git-arch ), g++-3.4 is not avaliable at all. is it needed for anything else but qemu? secondly: i fail to see, where the often mentioned build/ directory comes from. is it created by a target of mokomakefile? thirdly: does anyone use eclipse to develop and could share a few hints about how to set up eclipse for openmoko? regards ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

That didn't help. Looking at the battery circuit schematics I now think that the battery protection circuit on this battery is probably broken. Discharging is still possible (now at 2.8V at the terminals), but it does not accept any charge (I tried current-limited 4.2V/200mA at the battery terminals and there is (almost, a few uA) no current flow). -- Tobias PGP: http://9ac7e0bc.uguu.de このメールは十割再利用されたビットで作られています。 ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

So, what should I do now? Change my provider? Buy a prepaid sim card?... Really, that can't be a solution. BTW.: I tested a sim card from a friend and it worked. It was an 9 YEAR old simcard (G2)! But no o2 card seems to work (in the meantime, I have test a 3rd o2 card in my phone from another person, all three are g3).
