[Om2008.9] x11vnc

2008-09-28 Thread Matthias Apitz

Just for sharing a nice idea:

I've installed with

# opkg install x11vnc

a VNC server in the FR gadget, created a small icon on the desktop like
this:

# cat /usr/share/applications/x11vnc.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=x11vnc
Comment=Bring up x11vnc
Exec=xterm -e x11vnc -display :0.0 -ncache 10
Icon=x11vnc
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Application;Utilities;
SingleInstance=true
StartupNotify=true

and can now fully control the FR from my desktop by just launching

$ vncviewer 192.168.0.202:0

even it accepts keyboard input, for example in the dialer, or any other
control using the desktop mouse as the styler; this way it's also very
easy to make screenshots for presentation, or even capture a session in
a movie with:

$ vnc2swf openmoko.swf 192.168.0.202:0

some examples here:

Excellent idea. Qtopia already has a VMWare image that you can use to
develop Qtopia applications [1] but I haven't heard of anything else. I
would love to see this.

 Why not create some virtual machines with all compilingtools and needed

 softwares.

 This may be virtualbox images.. Nothing fancy, just ubuntu with
 toolchain, maybe even a ready eclipse version. Publish this by
 torrents, Maybe even with good to go software used during development.
 I spent lots of time before i got a working environment to develop/debug

I had the same idea but not yet asked here, because the ability to try
it on older Linux versions would normally fail.
My problem is exactly the problem that my box is too old and more work
to upgrade to a newer version.

What about qemu to be used ?

How fast is virtualbox compared to qemu ?

Re: [2008.9] What, no updates?...

2008-09-28 Thread Dr. Morpheus

 I get the impression updates are staged fairly well for stable. I use testing
 (and it runs fantatsic at the moment, can use as a daily phone) and updates
 are pushed pretty much every day.

Testing = FSO / Zhone? If not, where do I get this? Are there testing
feeds for 2008.9? If so, which one?

Thanks,

Re: [FSO] How to develop with Qt

2008-09-28 Thread Erin Yueh
Hi Nicola,

I've sent some patches to our distro team and OE can use bitbake to
build the latest qt4-x11-free to version 4.4.1. Since people from
community like to try qt4 new features, I will send an email to our
distro and they would help to put these packages to our feed. Then you
can install them from installer, no need to build it by yourself.

Also, not sure what you are interested in qt4? i am trying webkit
features by python-pyqt.

 I'm still trying to get a working and safe oetree with qt library inside :).
 The first time i tried with the org.openembedded.dev branch and my
 typical angstrom configured local.conf file, but it got a compilation
 error on uicmoc4-native. After that i tried with the fso openmoko conf
 file, it failed again but i noted that the preferred version of qt4
 there was 4.3.3 instead of 4.4.1. http://4.4.1. I remembered that in
 org.openembedded.stable there was 4.3.3 version, so i tried again with
 the stable branch. It compiled fine but did not create all the requested
 ipk (empty). I managed a bit on the qt_packaging.inc recipie and finally
 i got a working qt-oe-tree, i was able to compile a my application too.
 I bitbaked the last fso unstable image and flashed the phone with it,
 setupped a fake feed server on my oe tree, added it to feeds on the
 phone and did opkg update, opkg install qt4-x11-free, opkg install
 my-application, and after that i was able to start it adding a simple
 DISPLAY=:0.
 But i'm not very happy of this as it's not simple and i do not like to
 mix different branches.
 Please share your experience on this...

Testing has all software, 2008.8 and FSO etc. (correct if I'm wrong).
So if you change from 2008.8 (for which 2008.9 is a point release, but
the distro still is called 2008.8) to testing, you simply upgrade the
software you happen to have installed.

IMHO 2008.8 in repository/etc. could be simply called stable, then
we'd have equal terms to Debian - stable, testing, unstable. It could
still be branded as Om 2008.8.

If you want to start with FSO/Zhone installation, grab a

switch to Debian http://wiki.debian.org/DebianOnFreeRunner

No.
FSO release images are available here:

There's also a FSO-testing available here:
http://downloads.freesmartphone.org/fso-testing/

Zhone is just a demo-application for the FSO framework.
It does have some practical use as a phone-application though.
The framework (D-bus API/framework-daemon) is the primary product of FSO.

 It seems the graphical frontend is becoming too outdated to be used

An update (1.5) is done and has fixed many of these issues. The
problem was that repositories have changed (e.g. buildhost -
downloads), files are renamed (e.g. uBoot-*.bin - *-uBoot.bin) etc.
without direct notice to us by the repository maintainers...

 Hope that helps others ...

Please also help to maintain OpenMoko Flasher since it is open source.
Bug fixes and patches are always welcome (but were very rarely

[OSX] AJZaurusUSB bug fix project

2008-09-28 Thread Dr. H. Nikolaus Schaller
Hi all,
after having a lot of work to do to provide you with real Freerunner
hardware, I did have no spare time to update AJZaurusUSB.

But now, I have set up a Mac OS X kernel driver debugging environment
(needs two connected Macs with same OS release) since I had received
two reports:

* if the FR is plugged into the Mac by USB and is booted, a kernel
panic on the Mac results before the FR has completed booting
* if one tries an opkg update through USB-Internet sharing, there is
also some risk of kernel panic on the Mac

Unfortunately, I was not able to reproduce these bugs again although I
had experienced both myself some weeks ago.

The problem now is that

a) opgk update is broken with the 2008.4 firmware since the servers
are no longer available (argh)
b) after flashing 2008.8 or .9 or FDOM I could not get USB
connectivity any more

So, I am a little stuck with further debugging since there have
apparently been major changes in USB networking on the Freerunner. For
that I need some experienced help to discuss these issues.

Please contact me if you operate your Freerunner on Mac OS X and
finally want to have a working USB driver.

BR,
Nikolaus

[debian] install failure, fso-frameworkd is not going to be installed

Just reinstalling debian, and the fso stage fails with:

pkg-fso-keyring is already the newest version.
Package xserver-xorg-input-all is not installed, so not removed
[... repeat for lots of other xserver-xorg-input-* packages ...]
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  zhone-session: Depends: fso-frameworkd but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

(I originally ran ./install.sh all, and that failed in exactly the
same way. I then ran ./install.sh fso, to be sure, and to get the
exact output to copy here.)

Any solution?

Re: [FDOM] new release 20080927

Sounds like the usb network module isn't loaded. All newer kernels has
these modules no more compiled into the kernel and maybe it was
forgotten to add to the /etc/modules file in the actual FDOM version.
Take a look at the loaded modules (with ldmod) if g_ether is loaded
and if it is in /etc/modules.

Ciao,

Success with debian install! few how to questions...

2008-09-28 Thread Kishore
I have successfully installed debian and its pretty exciting. I have xfce
currently installed.

I have a few questions though that i post below.

1) How do i right click on the screen? Many applications require a right click
for configuration and besides, right now with the matchbox window manager i
cannot even exit an application that lacks a menu!

2) Can i install and use the phone and PIM applications available from 2008.x?
I prefer the contacts, messages etc apps from there. I also prefer the
keyboard that comes with FDOM.

Thanks in advance.

also see these two threads on the topic:

if all else fails you could construct a crude hack which overwrites
the appropriate portion of nand with one of two known u-boot_env

operating system bar by default

there will be hassles, of course:
- grep http://downloads.openmoko.org/sources/cvs/uboot/u-boot/CHANGELOG
for add env-variable
- see http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Bricked#Useful_information

images use the state files that are in the openmoko svn[1]. The only patch
I'm aware of for the state files is this[2] and it is not an improvement as
it is lowering the volume. Which bug report am I not aware of? I just queried
the bug tracker for bugs with the HasPatch keyword and could not find
anything.

 The root cause of this seems to be a dependency loop between libcaca0

 The available libcaca0 version is 0.99.beta14-1, and this depends on
 libcucul0 = 0.99.beta14-1.

 The available libcucul0 version is 0.99.beta15-1, and this depends on

I'm in the process of trying to complete the install with Debian

 Qtopia refuses to suspend automatically (i.e. the powermanagement

 boot partition is corrupted.

 I guess what happens is that Qtopia starts scanning all the files on the
 SD card. It is designed to be run from internal flash with your MP3s on
 the SD card, so it scans all the files there and makes a database of
 them. With a Debian system on SD, this probably takes hours, and during
 that Qtopia probably refuses to suspend. You can turn this feature off
 in a file called Storage.conf lying around somewhere, IIRC.

Ah, very interesting. I will try if this can be the case. But I
deleted the entry for the SD card from inittab. However, maybe that is
no safe way to make the card inaccessible to Qtopia.

Thanks

Hi Erin,
I have to build qt as i use c++ for my applications, so I need staging file

Also, not sure what you are interested in qt4? i am trying webkit
 features by python-pyqt.

I'm trying to complete and port yet another gps application for the

[Om2008.9] settings via shell?

2008-09-28 Thread Matthias Apitz

Hello,

The FB's desktop offers the 'settings' via an icon and using this to
change for example the wake-up time of the clock is a bit boring because
it always changes other things too, for example the suspend time to 30
secs (and I don't want to have suspend, only screen saver after 30
secs);

is there a way to control these 'settings' values from the shell in the
FR?

thx

Re: [2008.X] Flashing the kernel live

Erasing 128 Kibyte @ 7e -- 98 % complete.

The problem is that the mtd driver will only accept writes with length
equal a multiple of 2048, so the last write operation will always fail
(unless you are very lucky with the size). To get past the problem you
have to pad the uImage file with some extra 0xff.

You can write a program that does this nicely or you can just do the
following hack:
Run the following command for a while (stop it with ctrl-c) to generate
a file containing only 0xff

 while true ; do echo -n xx | tr 'x' '\377'  ff.file; done
The size should be at least 2048 bytes, but it does not matter if it is
too big. Then pad the kernel

 cat uImage.bin ff.file  uImagePad.bin
And now you can download the kernel with
 cat uImagePad.bin  /dev/mtd3
You will still get the error message, but it is after the end of the
code so it does not matter.
